Miscellaneous News   Miscellaneous News : New MorphOS release for Classic Amiga
posted by tokai on 23-Feb-2006 13:31:23 (6318 reads)
The MorphOS Development Team released a new free version of MorphOS 1.4.5 for Classic Amigas with a PowerUP/PPC card. Following the original press statement as it was posted on morphzone.org:

"The MorphOS Development Team is pleased to announce the immediate availability of an updated MorphOS version for computers equipped with PowerUP accelerator cards. The included changes are as follows:

- Vastly improved graphics hardware compatability: MorphOS now includes 68K drivers for popular graphics cards such as the Cybervision64, Cybervision 64/3D and the Picasso IV.

- Problems on machines with more than 128MB of memory were fixed.

- hal.com1 was updated in order to allow proper support of CV3D.

- The RegTool (registration application) was updated as well.

- An experimental version of 4IDE support was added. (Please read the IDE splitter section in the "morphos.readme" text file.)

- The update also includes new Hungarian locale settings.

The MorphOS Free Edition for PowerUP can be downloaded from http://powerup.morphos-team.net. We suggest to carefully read the instructions on the website as well as in the included "readme" text to make the installation process as effortless as possible.

We hope you enjoy the update and would like to thank Csaba "Chip" Simon and Péter "Ratman" Földesi for supplying test hardware."

The GREX sold fewer becuase it was more limited than the Mediator. It was faster but was only good for a graphics card.

Your memory serves you quite badly... Early Mediator versions also had crippled DMA slots, and the situation sometimes was even worse than with GRex.

Quote:
Networking speeds was slower than the mediator.

Could you explain how it's possible for the mediator to be faster in anything with 1/4 of the bus speed? Sigh.

Quote:
Sound options were poor compared to the mediator.

GRex supports FM801 and SB Live, Mediator supports FM801 and SB128... Go figure.

Quote:
Tv cards never work or worked well and NO USB card.

Well, to have tvcard work in your Mediator, you need to buy Elbox's driver CD, which costs you extra money. Elbox's offering of Spider is illegal IIRC, because of licensing issues with Poseidon. Same applies to their P96 driver, it was never officially approved by P96 people, AFAIK.

And let's not forget the main pro-GRex fact: the only publicly available PPC native OS only supports GRex.

"And let's not forget the main pro-GRex fact: the only publicly available PPC native OS only supports GRex"

and just to clarify the criptic statement, are you saying that only because CVPPC and BVision are seen as cards through a G-Rex bus, MOS-PuP only supports GRex?

I don't really get the question, but i think the answer is no. MorphOS supports G-Rex. And also computers without G-Rex. Lack of Mediator support in fact has nothing to do with G-Rex support. It's because the flaky way of Mediator works (8MB address space window + huge amount of MMU tricks needed). It's a PITA to support, and i think most of MorphOS Team agrees with that it simply wouldn't worth the effort, by far.

And you still wonder why the A1200 has sold so badly (compared to the A500) ? Or why C= went bust ?....

Seeing as it's over a decade ago, not really.

That wasn't the reason. The A1200 sold very well but CBM were beginning to have supply problems (and a huge - eventually critical problem called Medhi Ali). I remember AF saying there were only 30,000 in the UK on release. Yes the AA chipset wasn't good enough to keep the Amiga superiority card rolling and yes the A500Plus should have been the A1200 but the AA chipset itself was not the reason for A1200 sales not eclipsing the A500.

Any one know if this support Prometheus PCI expansion? Then I'll just need a PPC card.

Unfortunately, currently no. Prometeus doesn't have such problems as the Mediator, so it could be supported. It's just the fact that a Prometeus driver was never done for MorphOS. (To be honest, the chance is fairly low, to have it supported, but never say never! )

@ChainQ

YOU ARE INCORRECT ON MANY POINTS

I own both so I can tell you this.

GREX 1200 only supported ESS SOLO1 sound cards on the A1200 Version.

FM801 not usable on the A1200 GREX VERSION .

Also as far as I know DCE never supported SB

Only 10 T based supported cards for the GREX.

10/100 card support for Mediator.

USB was provided for the mediator.
USB was never available for the GREX

USB support was never illegal because you paid Chris Hodges for a Key
I paid for my key like every other Spider user.
I get full support like every other USB user.

GREX had some nice features like being able to have Screen promotion from the ROMs.

I NEVER got better FPS with the GREX then with my Mediator.
I have benchmarks which are stored on one of my old drives The GREX proved not to be faster in real life tests.

In real life tests I can transfer files over ethernet three times faster on a mediator equipped machine then a GREX.

I have never tried the OPEN PCI DRIVERS so I can't speculate how they function on the different platforms.

You do make a point early mediators were not that good.
But later models were excellent.

GREX never had later models.

CGX V4 and MorphOS support is a GREX plus

But I suspect those are more political then practicability related.

The ability to use a PPC OS doesn't sound very political to me.

Ethernet 10/100 works on GRex 1200 under MorphOS, should be the same for SBLive.

@falcon

Thats what I thought after not finding the apropriate GREX drivers on the net.
The MorphOS Classic machine I use is a PPC A4 with a Cybervision
My A1200 PPCs run 3.9 and one is running AOS4.
Will hook up a GREX and see how it works under MorphOS

Also good work to the MorphOS team for fixing the 128 Bug.
I Didn't know that was the cause of it not working on my A1200
Thats why its on the A4 not the 1200.

The 128MB problem had to do with the fact that the Cyberstorm hardware only supports up to 128MB and the Blizzard version worked the same way, afaik.
