Software News   Software News : New set of IDE/SATA drivers on os4depot
   posted by sg2 on 7-Mar-2006 12:35:01 (6083 reads)
Dear OS4 Update 4 user,

Please retrieve the ide_driverpack.zip file from os4depot and install it over your system partition (see the included readme file).

This driver set tentatively fixes :

- an interrupt handler problem (interrups on port >1 could be missed) with the SATA drivers

- the "strange pause" problem with sii0680

- the strange "WB drag & drop copy trashes files" problem observed by very few of you with a1ide

- a couple of very minor bugs in IDETool

This informal interim release has been considered opportunate since the OS4 components concerned are somehow critical.

Kind regards,
--
Stéphane Guillard

@ssolie

I was unable to copy many files using the workbench drag and drop method after installing update 4 on a newly formatted partition.

Copying to USB memory card from disk - failed
Copying from USB memory card to disk - failed
Copying from one disk to another disk - failed

(Stopped in the middle, needed to reset computer to recover.)

This was fixed by installing the new drivers from OS4 Depot.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

Cool update, specially the remove of the pause.
So its only to install it, use the computer and
hope there are no pauses ;)

Small bug report for the new idetool...

"idetool -l a1ide.device" would, in the Upd4 version, return info for my hard drive (unit 0) and CD-ROM (unit 2). The new one just displays the hard drive. I think it has a problem getting info from the (nonexistent) unit 1 and gives up then.

Quote:
6.OS4:> idetool -l a1ide.device

"idetool -u a1ide.device 2" does give the correct information about my CD-ROM, so the bug seems to be only in the "-l" command.

Strange pause problem still exists. It just happened here. (sii0680ide.device 51.51 (4.3.06)) I was playing a music file and compiling my program when it happened. (A1-SE, SI0680, SB Audigy1, update4 fresh install)

Yes, same thing here! But the freez has only happened once after I updated the driver 2 days ago. (sii0680, A1SE-G3) Ironically it didn't happen before, or maybe I don't remember even if it did.

@firbodi

And you also have SE..
Is this isolated to SE or do any XE owner get pauses?

@sg2

Is it possible that we might see IDETool with a nice GUI sometime in the future?

@sg2

Sorry, as 2 others users, the problem of pause didn't disappear.

Too bad...

@sg2

Thanks for working on the ide drivers, I appreciate your continued support.

New ide_driverpack_51.51 is working fine here. I use the onboard ide interface on my µA1, so I suppose I am using a1ide.device.kmod ...

By the way, I have been running dma mode 69 (UDMA 5, 100 MB/s) since February 19, 2006. On Feb 22, I encountered an disk error while transferring a very large jpeg picture to my hard drive. Partition Wizard detected a BitMap error, and I was able to recover fine using the repair function in Partition Wizard. No hard disk trouble since. I am using FastFileSystem 51.29 (2.1.2006). My disk drive is an ancient 40GB Maxtor DiamondMax40 model# 34098H4.

again sg2

@sg2, ssolie and others

When I was using update #3, I ran into a problem when I used any of the dma modes. Certain large files would be corrupted when I used the mouse to drag them from the ramdisk to the hard drive. If I used the shell copy command, no problem. Since I like to use the mouse, I went back to PIO mode for the duration of my time using update #3.

I'm glad to see that my Maxtor drive is now supported. Under update #4, I have no trouble at all dragging files from ramdisk to hard drive, even at dma mode 69.

However, under update #4, my system would lock-up if I dragged certain files from my USB storage devices (512MB Lexar JumpDrive) to the ramdisk or hard drive. At first I thought this only happened if I tried to drag a file out of the jumpdrive too soon after dragging it to the jumpdrive. It seemed to always be the same file or directory, then I discovered other files that would lock-up the system.

After fiddling around for a few days, on March 9 I removed ASyncWB from my WBStartUP drawer, and I have not encountered a lock-up since. I can drag those files and my entire pictures directory back and forth between my hard drive, ramdisk and two jumpdrives (dragging from one jumpdrive to the other is actually kind of cool, as these Lexar JumpDrives have an LED to show activity).

sg2:

Thanks for your efforts, however the new a1ise device still doesn't find my Pioneer DVD-RW/DVR-109. I had to go back to the a1ide.device.kmod from update 3.

My computer is an A1-XE G4 with the USB & DMA fixes, and a clean OS4 update 4 install.

Regards,
