posted by EntilZha on 10-Apr-2006 13:49:34 (14857 reads)
Leuven, Belgium - 10. April, 2006

Hyperion Entertainment is proud to announce the availability of the Software Development Kit Version 51.22 for the AmigaOS 4.0 Developer Pre-Release.

The new SDK features the new gcc 4.0.2 compiler toolchain as well as updated header files for AmigaOS 4.0 Pre-Release update 4.

The SDK download is available for all interested parties via anon access at Hyperions FTP Server:
ftp://ftp.hyperion-entertainment.biz/AmigaOS4_SDK

The SDK is available in two versions: A 160 MB download that contains everything to get you started, including compiler and contributed libraries, and a cut-down version that contains the compiler and documentation only.

Please see THIS post for ftp download details.

I'm not going to bother downloadinbg the SDK. It's not a lot of use until I can actually obtain and run OS4.0, is it?

Er, well, good thing we don't force anybody to download it

According to YAM_utilities.h it's supposed to be 'struct TimeVal' in OS4 now, but the SDK still has 'struct timeval'? Could anyone explain to me, please?

Yeah, the server would probably go up in smoke if everybody was forced to download it, it's crying out in pain now with those of us that actually want it

Thanks for the release though and for setting up the FTP server (which seems to be working brilliantly, I now have my copy safely downloaded and will have a play later )

Well, this certainly wasn't a good idea to include in public sources.

struct timeval will change soon to struct TimeVal to finally get rid of the name clashes, but that isn't in the current SDK yet.

The SDK reflects the state of update 4. This change with struct timeval was pretty recent.

In general, it is bad practice to make projects like YAM use hader files that are not even available to the general public.

To add some perspective into what Rogue already said: YAM is aligned to the lastest internal OS4 beta, which has TimeVal instead of timeval.
The SDK is for Update #4, which is just a little bit older.

Since I cannot program anything at all I won't download this, but I would like to ask one question...

What will this update allow all the clever programmers to do?

Something new or just to do it easier?

YAM contains own definitions of "struct TimeVal" and in case there isn't one in the SDK it should enabled the own ones.

@damato

Oh? Then there's an error somewhere, I can't compile YAM since this change.

Isn't that just a m68k-amigaos host and target GCC? He seems to be looking for an amigaos-m68k (AmigaOS 3.x) hosted, ppc-amigaos (AmigaOS4) target cross-compiler, i.e. something like like
Quote:
7.RAM Disk:> echo `gg:bin/ppc-amigaos-gcc -dumpmachine` `gg:bin/ppc-amigaos-gcc -dumpversion`
ppc-amigaos 2.95.3
7.RAM Disk:> echo `gg:bin/ppc-amigaos-gcc3 -dumpmachine` `gg:bin/ppc-amigaos-gcc3 -dumpversion`
ppc-amigaos 3.4
7.RAM Disk:> gg:bin/file -L gg:bin/ppc-amigaos-gcc gg:bin/ppc-amigaos-gcc3
gg:bin/ppc-amigaos-gcc: AmigaOS hunk format executable
gg:bin/ppc-amigaos-gcc3: AmigaOS hunk format executable

Now, you only need Amiga Inc to get their finger out and put NDK out online again. Unfortunately it's not just a matter of nagging Hmetal (Ray Akey) as he removed them because he was told to by his bosses. I tried to e-mail them about this several times, but no answers so aybe if you have some psychic abilities you are more lucky than me. And please notify me if you are successful ;)

In the meantime you can download an illegally distributed NDK from DjBase's site, google it, or try to find a store that sells the AmigaDev CD 2.1, although it has slightly outdated NDKs too.

What i meant is an OS4 crosscompiler hosted on amigaos3.x 68k gcc

You can obtain the NDK from the haage-partner site

In case anyone was concerned about hyperion's bandwidth here's a result of downloading the SDK by FTP:

160957186 bytes received in 28.12 secs (5590.8 kB/s)

So I'm guessing www.hyperion-entertainment.biz is not hosted in someone's back bedroom.

The bandwidth wasn't as much a concern as evidently the way the file was previously being served was causing problems....the offers were more about making sure it was available to those that wanted it, as well as spreading out bandwidth usage if needed.

BTW, thanks to any/all involved for the new examples. haven't had time to go through, but looks like more ReAction examples, as well as a few new categories for examples, including USB.

Nice! Reaction is still a bit of a black art, so I'm glad that Hyperion have provided more sample code. I haven't had a chance to download yet (I'll be going home in an an hour or so, I'll try then), but I'm quite looking forward to it.

Incidentally, why such an old version of gcc? 4.0.3 has been out for a few weeks now, as has 4.1.0. Is patching gcc for OS4 such a chore, or is it more a case of "it's not, but we'd rather do something else with the limited time we have"?

All the examples were donnated by others.

Well, 4.0.2 is not really an old version

Yeah, it's basically that. Building the compiler takes some time since you have to build it practically twice, once for clib2, and once for newlib (the support libraries, especially libstdc++, have to be present in both versions).
