hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : New CPU Modules: Estimated Availability June 19/2006
posted by ackcontrls on 23-Apr-2006 16:30:37 (69948 reads)
ACK Software Controls, Inc. is pleased to announce the upcoming availability of two new AmigaOne XE CPU modules. The first CPU module will be equipped with a Freescale MC7448 CPU clocked at 1GHz. The 1GHz module will retail for $500.00 US Dollars. The second CPU module will be equipped with a Freescale MC7448 clocked at 1.7GHz will retail for $850.00 US Dollars. Both CPU modules will be eqipped with a high quality heatsink and fan to ensure quiet, reliable operation.

Prototype modules will be demonstrated May 22/2006. The location for this demonstration has yet to be determined. Due to the low volume nature of these products, emails indicating demand for either of the two units is greatly appreciated. Stay tuned for updates.

Sincerely,

Adam Kowalczyk

Great to hear that these modules will soon be available and the Powervixen
also just round the corner.

I have a A1 XE with 800mhz G3 myself, the fan on the CPU really needs
replacing. I`ve not really been bothered about removing or replacing CPU cards
in the past (Blizzard boards etc) , but there seem to be a lot of cases where
people have damaged their modules when doing this. I haven`t attempted to
change the fan myself and i`m not sure I really fancy even just changing the CPU
Card.

I hope Adam`s going to issue these boards with some really idiot proof
instructions (as I understand it jumpers on the motherboard need to be changed
if upgrading from a G3 to a G4), ok this is isn`t the hardest thing in the world
but i`d hate to see anyone fry a brand new CPU module.

Just a thought but longer term would a PCI CPU card expansion be possible,
perhaps this way you would have room for Serial ATA , USB and perhaps a new
northbridge as well as a cpu, thereby getting round all the XE`s issues in one
neat card.

The longer term solution would be a completely new motherboard.

Indeed , that would be the ideal situation, hopefully you will do well enough
out of the CPU modules and Powervixen to be motivated to do this? I wish you
well.

I wonder if the 1000 units can be sold worldwide, if:
- Amiga dealers buy some A1 boards, assuming they are made
- it makes less sense to offer cpu modules, if no A1 are made - unless you know somethign we dont?
- perhaps we should await how OS4 does before getting more cpu power??

By using a pci cpu expansion would you not be limiting all cpu bandwidth to the pci bus anyway, which in turn would have to pass through the old northbridge to access motherboard ram, other resources, etc.?
If the cpu expansion had on-board memory, northbridge, usb, etc, etc why bother having it in the pci slot, as this would limit potential buyers to those already owning an Amigaone?
If the the answer is that the pci expansion needs to access existing A1 motherboard resources, then you're limited to the existing northbridge again, aswell as the limited bandwidth of everything using only the pci bus.

PS I'm not familiar with the A1 architecture, but I assume it is a generic CPU-->northbridge-->southbridge-->pci architecture not too dis-similar from intel, amd etc.

PS - Looking forward to the PV Adam, Kudos for being an active Amiga hardware developer. Hope you feel the appreciation of the many, rather than the cynicism of the few.

I know this announcment says "CPU" in it, but are they actually talking about a full motherboard (with this CPU inserted into it), or JUST the CPU (where you must already have, or be able to scrounge up, a suitable mobo to stick it in)?

--addendum:

Oh, nevermind, I see there're alot (!!!!) more posts in this thread than I realised, and I see the answer already...

The ENIAC used to cost half a million 1946 dollars. The PDP-11/20 used to cost $20,000. What's the relevance of Amigas or ENIACs or PDP-11s in 2006? This isn't half a century, one or three decades or even 3 years ago. It's today.

Oddly enough, there's a company now making reproductions of the old IMSAI computers.

Depending on model, you can even stick the old S-100 cards in it if you want, or stick an ATX mobo in it to work co-operatively with the old-style IMSAI mobo, or just insert an ATX mobo and run emulators on it, al of which would be able to drive the flashing lights and react to the bank of switches on the front of the machine. And, now you get USB ports in it!
