Hardware News   Hardware News : Sony PS3 confirmation details!
posted by TrebleSix on 9-May-2006 9:15:29 (4726 reads)
The new PlayStation 3 (PS3) will hit Japanese stores on 11 November, with the US and Europe following less than a week later, Sony has announced.

The console will be available in two versions starting at $499 (394 euros).

The PS3 controller will include Bluetooth technology for wireless play with the addition of USB cables to wire the controller for recharging.

Although the most astonishing of thing about the controller that was announced at the pre-E3 press confrence was the inclusion of a six-axis sensing system and the removal of the vibrating core. The press release stated that, "Pursuant to the introduction of this new six-axis sensing system, the vibration feature that is currently available on DUALSHOCK and DUALSHOCK 2 controllers for PlayStation and PlayStation 2, will be removed from the new PS3 controller as vibration itself interferes with information detected by the sensor."

Pictures of the PS3 dev kits can be seen here and here

Motion sensitive controllers have been around for years, MS released a version of its sidewinder controller for PC with this capability.

I personally appreciate the non-Amiga news items, as I don't visit any other computer-related sites regularly. However I think a seperate non-amiga news page would be an asset worth having, with news feed at the side of of the main page or ticker somewhere like the one at Apple.com. A ticker for Amiga news could go on the non Amiga page. Could bring in some new members/interest too.

Anyway, wonder what made sony change their mind on the controller?

Could be something to do with this.

turumbar: can't exactly spot where i said SONY INVENTED it .

also, since you informed us about the pads available on pc , which games utilize theese functions? , sounds dubious for non arcade games but then again i have no idea as this stuff is sorts new to me... though a game like locoroco and mercury certainly sounds amusing with such a controller.

cheers

Heheh it was more supposed to be just a general observation.

With regards to games supporting the tilt function on the MS Sidewinder - I don't think any game did specifically support this feature and it was more used as an alternative to pressing directional controls. It sucked badly which is probably why nobody has heard of it.

@Turambar

There have been several GBA games with tilt features included too. It's truly nothing new and since it was added after the banana was introduced, we can probably assume that it's strongly "inspired" by the Wii remote. Regardless of Mercury :)

Yes, I think so also...

It has been introduced to give a similar (although far more simplistic) feature to the new dual shock...

So do I. Without these non-vapourware hardware announcments going on, us Amigans might start to believe that all Operating Systems are designed for hardware that is only available before the Operating System is released in its final version! Thankfully most companies developing hardware in the big world, give release dates 6 months in advance with a rough price and a few sneak peaks of games/applications. This is the way to do it! If Amiga ever get big again, they could learn a few things from Sony.

I think including these distantly related news items makes the site look desparate. It would be better off without them. There are an abundance of websites that are going to mention the release of the PS3 - there are precious few that are covering Amiga news. This site should stick to what it was intended for. Including barely relevent news items only makes the site appear reduntant, especially to outsiders who won't recognise what connection the PS3 has to the Amiga (hardly any actually).

The writer of this news is more biased than a sickest sony fan. The console DOES NOT COST 349, BUT 499. AND THAT IS FOR A VERSION WITHOUT A POSSIBILITY TO SEE HD MOVIES.

How pathetic is being a fanatic.

Knock it off, Vision. Are you saying that treblesix intentionally has attempted to mislead the members of AW? If yes, at least try to prove it (although how on earth you have been able to guess that treblesix's source did not incorrectly display that price, is beyond me) and drop the insults while you're at it. Otherwise I will ask you to retract the "biased" and "fanatic" references, and lay off the caps key.

Why on earth would I have to prove anything?

Sorry, "boss" but HE has to clarify why he put on that price, which didn´t appear in any other place.

And while he is at it, better correct the text of the post, because it is still showing the "mistake" and nobody (including you) seems to be ashamed because of it.

The exchange rates have been all over the place the last couple of weeks, but SCEE did announce Euro prices of 499 and 599, but these include sales tax/VAT unlike the American prices. (At todays exchange rates thats approx £340 and £410 (inc VAT))

Oh and for the record the cheaper unit still has the blu-ray drive (has to the games are all gonna be on BD) but no HDMI, but it can still send higher res progressive scan analogue signals out (component).

Cant send you a link regarding this Bodie as Sonys new UK/Europe Playstation site is all Flash... and bloody useless.

I hope we get a way of using an old Dual Shock 2 on the console as the movement sensors will be utterly useless.

The connection is that you can run an Amiga on it (although it would have been better if it could run natively).
