Hardware News   Hardware News : Troika NG Progress Report
   posted by Troika on 26-May-2006 2:36:43 (35515 reads)
We thought a progress report was in order as we have some very good news. After much development we are happy to report that version 1.4 of Amy'05 is nearly complete. Our next progress report will contain lots of information about Amy, along with the much awaited Photo's!

For many of the first adopters of Eyetech Amiga One models, their needs and wants have grown past the specifications of the machines they are currently using and they wish to upgrade to a more modern motherboard design.

Our original intent with project “Prometheus” was to design and build several low cost lines of motherboards, built on proven technology. The Amy’05 design would be followed by a more powerful design. When we designed Amy’05 we did not envisage the changes that have taken place in the Power PC market, most notable, Apple's shift from PowerPC to Intel that has presented both problems as well as opportunities for Troika.

While developing Amy’05 we have been investigating several good opportunities for the existing Amiga user base. We have found others with similar business interests to ours, from which we were able to form new alliances which has allowed us to begin due diligence procedures for purchasing a design of a higher end motherboard. Acquiring the rights to this motherboard will allow us to bring a higher end board to market far quicker than if we were to design one from the ground up. Also, by forming new alliances we will be able to bring the per unit cost of this motherboard down - a saving that we wish to pass on to you.

We would like to show you photographs of our higher end motherboard but our NDA does not permit this. However, we are able to show you pictures that have been cropped to conceal the board’s identity.

Provided we are able to do this, we plan on offering this higher end motherboard as a compliment to our first line of Amy motherboards.

We have been down this road before, with announcements based on assurances from third parties who have failed to deliver. Amy’05 has encountered problems but they are all in the past.

Between now and then we shall post regular progress reports, instead of intermittent press releases and promises.

Motherboard with Tsi-109 & 7448 .

Our Sound system.

@Rogue

With the "slight" exception that we are not even at step 2) yet.
There are not any pictures of the Amy'05 yet - I mean except some photographs of the "RAM", the northbridge, IDE-controller, etc.

Sure, photos don't "prove" anything, but they are easy to do and could actually raise the confidence that there actually is *something*.

So again, why did Troika decide to publish crippled photos of a "high-end" board at all? Maybe because they think that it would raise confidence that it's not just an empty announcement?

Exactly the same applies to Amy '05. Why do they put meaningless photos of RAM and IDE-controllers on the website, but OTOH decide not to publish any photos of the actual motherboard? Because there is not even a prototype yet. Ian Stedman announced on IRC that he is planning to show a prototype on the 12th of May. This didn't happen.

After all I don't get the impression that development is very far or that we will see a release in 2006. Surely, I'd like to be proven wrong on that.

@ Jerry

Yeah that would be nice.... That way if they are available we may have attendees bringing along some second user XE's / A1c's for people to pick up on the cheap.

Maybe someone that has been following the News closer than I have could do a feature comparision as it stands between ACK and Troika offerings.

No offense, but I see a pattern here:

1) Announcement by a company
1a) Any number of people call for pictures. "It's vapor without it"
2) Company releases pictures
2a) Any number of people call for prototype hardware. "It's vapor without it".

Let's wait and see what 3) and 3a) will be.

The 'problem' is that we haven't yet left this pattern

4)Company relese final board revision with AOS4 running
4a)Any number of people call it vapour because "It's vapor If cannot buy it".
5)company relese first batch of board list for selling
5a)Any number of people call it vapour because it cost more that they can pay and "It's vapor if "I" cannot buy it".

Something like that??!!!

There are any number of people that only want to touch the........

Well... LOL! We should start a contest about who announces a more funny project (with pictures). But I'm afraid Elbox would win, they have the greatest experience in vapor-ware, althrough as I see some ppl try hard to be better :>

to be honest, I don't care about the price, well I do, but not really. I just want new Amiga HW. SO I might just buy what comes first.

Er, I didn't deny that. I didn't shout "Photos prove nothing, this is vapor", did I?

Great stuff! More! More!

OK, so we have the possibility of all sorts of new hardware. In my mind, the *real* test now will be the first one to demonstrate OS4 booting on their new hardware. Preferably at my house of course but I'll also take a live demo at my local Amiga users group meeting. Bring it on Troika, ACK, etc.

Note that Troika reps also linger in #amigaworld as well so grab WookieChat (or some lesser IRC client) and join in.

What's really funny is the last update was last October I think. That would make the next one around March of 2007.

Thanks for the update. Interesting.

Please stick to more regular updates.

@hatschi
Surely the true test of actual progress must be seeing it boot into OS4. All this picture of the board stuff is rather rediculous to me. Demonstrate it running OS4 and then we have a milestone worth talking about don't you think?

Absolutely. Pictures of the board are nice; pictures of the board connected and running OS4 are better; a video demo showing it running OS4 is even better; a live demo will silence even the biggest critics.

It's good to hear something concrete from them. Licensing an existing board was a wise move I think. Now show me the video!

Absolutely. Particularly because that would mean that another obstacle is overcome: Porting/modifying OS4 to do boot on Amy'05. In contrast to Adam, I've never heard that anyone from Troika is involved in OS-development. So theoretically someone would need to pay 20.000 EUR for porting.
Then the next obstacle is the license. Unfortunately, we still haven't heard any clear statement from Troika yet. The question in TA was most obviously dodged.

@Hans

Telepathy? After posting, I saw that you also answered with "Absolutely." Scary.

@ Troika

It is good to see there is enough space and four mounting holes for a heatsink now.

A motherboard with Tsi-109 and a 7448 is nice, but what about the graphics board? Will this 'high end' motherboard have some kind of AGP or PCIe bridge, or is it PCI only?

Kind regards,

Dennis
