Software News   Software News : AmigaOS4: Prerelease of Amaya 8.8.4 for X-Window
   posted by CygnusEd on 30-May-2006 17:39:17 (6533 reads)
A prerelease of the webeditor Amaya is now available on OS4-Depot.
The program is able to display css-based pages. Frames and java-script
are not supported.

To install the package you need the X11-window-package "Cygnix", which
you can also find on OS4-Depot.

The program is already in a stable condition, but the internet-connection
is not working. But Amaya is more a editor than a browser, so it should
be interesting for people, who like to have a gui-based editor.

This is good stuff, but don't you think that it's a little ironic that we have a CSS capable HTML editor before we have a CSS capable browser?

Anyway, thanks CygnusEd for another release. Anything else you've still got lying around on your hard-drive that we'd find useful?

Hans

This works and works very well!

A simple HTML / CSS browser that I can run on OS4/X11 can't be too far away
now!

Well done again!

At worse, you can at least download / save the webpages and view them in the editor

Nevertherless, it's a good step forward, not just this but the other CygnusEd goodies as well.

@CygnusEd

Great job on the releases!
Can't wait to give 'em both a spin..

A few Qs-
a. It seems the X11 server is actually still 68k, can you explain what was recompiled or is PPC/OS4 native in it? (Or did I read your release notes wrong?)
b. I _think_ you mentioned something about gtk or gdk in the thread you 'unveiled' xfce and amaya...am I wrong? (highly possible)
c. xfce looks like xfce3- why not xfce4?

Every binary - except the server - is PPC/OS4 native. I'm still working on
the server.

I have GTK / GDK 1.2.10. There is an example-binary in the package. GTK2 is
not done.

> c. xfce looks like xfce3- why not xfce4?

XFce4 needs GTK2 (see above). XFce4 looks better, but it needs much more
recources. I think I won't port this version.

Let us know if you need help with the server. There are a few of us (e.g. Bean, evilrich, myself, etc.) that have done fork/spawn ports now and I assume the X server has fork() or similar in it.

@unimon

When I installed the program, I kept getting grim reapers, and then complete lockup. I snooped through the unpacked archive, and found the 3 libraries, path = X11R6.3-Prerelease1/GeekGadgets68k/sys/libs/. The 3 libraries are ixemul.library, ixnet.library and fifo.library. I manually copied them to libs: and lo and behold, the system sprang to life. I also made sure Cygnix-startup was being executed.

Hm,

{talk to myself}... need to get home to try that out ... {/talk to myself}

Didn't someone create a html file system to mount a http:// address as a regular dos device ?
Then, Amaya could load the index file from that device

{talk to myself}... I have to try that out...{/talk to myself}

At least 3. I wrote one about 8 years ago since I din't know Michael van Elst did one earlier already, and someone else implemeted a new one a few months ago since he didn't know both of them ...

Chris_Y did the 'recent one,' believe it's on OS4depot, and was a news item not that long ago..a quick search should find that one, dunno about Joerg's or the other one Joerg mentioned tho..

I can successfully load websites in Amaya using the HTTP: handler off os4depot.net.

It doesnt seem to load the images though. I had to assign "/http" to nothing to get rid of requesters..

I loaded amigaworld.net but couldnt login.

-Edit: Often Amaya goes extremely slow and then wont do anything for minutes.. and CPU usage stays at 100% for a few minutes.. and I keep quitting and restarting to try a new website..

-Edit2: two screenshots:
http://wookiechat.amigarevolution.com/pics/amaya_os4_1.png
http://wookiechat.amigarevolution.com/pics/amaya_os4_2.png
.. It was a battle to make them, with 100% cpu usage, and amaya being hardly responsive when trying to load a site.

-Edit3: to get aw.net to load I had to click cancel because it seemed stuck on the first thing it was trying to load.. things seemed to go a little better when I disabled image loading (it didnt load the images anyway with image loading ON).. but its definately not usable for every day use yet. Also, it seems to display sites worse than ibrowse..
