Software News   Software News : AmigaOS4: Prerelease of Amaya 8.8.4 for X-Window
   posted by CygnusEd on 30-May-2006 17:39:17 (6532 reads)
A prerelease of the webeditor Amaya is now available on OS4-Depot.
The program is able to display css-based pages. Frames and java-script
are not supported.

To install the package you need the X11-window-package "Cygnix", which
you can also find on OS4-Depot.

The program is already in a stable condition, but the internet-connection
is not working. But Amaya is more a editor than a browser, so it should
be interesting for people, who like to have a gui-based editor.

Wow !

@joerg

I wrote one about 8 years ago since I din't know Michael van Elst did one earlier already, and someone else implemeted a new one a few months ago since he didn't know both of them ...

Too bad, such "waste of time" should never happened

@Jorge

Great idea!!

Very good hint. I think I didn't make this clear enough in my readme.
But if you use the installer, Cygnix-Startup should be executed anyway.

I'm 99% sure, that this is not a problem of Amaya, it is a problem of the x-server. So this will be not fixed, before I can finish the server.

Also, it seems to display sites worse than ibrowse..

I guess that improvements (& fixes) to an Amiga version of X-Windows/GTK/etc will happen faster once there is some real software to run on them, such as a web browser

@all

Guys just a question but.

You know the way that there is a simpleHTML datatype that allows multiview to render html docs. I wonder how hard it would be for someone to make a datatype from the rendering part of the code. a sort of Amaya.datatype that we could use instead.

ado

atm an X server program can be used only on its X Server screen.. so an amaya.datatype could not be possible. But CygnusEd could be more precise

@aldur

A datatype is not the right way. A way that might be possible, is to map a x-window into a intuition-window. But this is pure speculation.
I will know more, when my server is running.

@CygnusEd

How about a X11 wrap library?

@FranSexy

such a thing exists for 10 years, as a linklib : http://www.aminet.net/search.php?query=libx11
It had however a few problems it seems, but it would probably be useful even if someone starts writing a new wrapper from scratch.

However even with a x11 wrapper, many linux apps can be tricky to port (at least it needs more than a recompilation) when they use "advanced" posix stuff involving process (fork/exec*) or sockets treated as files, ...

@FranSexy @Fab

I've made a port of this wrapper library (libX11) before I started my X11-project. This library is useless and if you have a look at the x11 sources, you will see, that it would be a horrible work to port all functions.
And you also need a wrapper for Xt and other libs.

@CygnusEd

So, having an X11 wrapper library is not a realistic way to make ports of such software as GIMP and Firefox possible? As far as I understand, if we had a library which would map X11 calls to AmigaOS calls, then we could have any GUI toolkit work this way (GTK, GDK, wxWidgets) because they all use X11 functions to render their GUI/gfx. Or does AmigaOS lack functionality to make this possible?

@COBRA

libX11 is a library on unix-systems, that is similar to what layers/graphics-library on the amiga is. So if we have such a library, we can't use it together with any of the amiga gui-libs (Reaction...). We could use GTK and QT on top of this library, but we still would have a unix look and feel. So what is the advantage? A lot of work, only to remove the network-support.

The solution is to modify the server and NOT the clients (including the gui-libs) and the result would be nearly the same. And this would be MUCH easier and all advantages that X11 has, would still be available. For example we could use applications running on a remote-system with a single intuition-window on the workbench. No matter if this remote system runs on unix, windows (cygwin), MacOS or on AmigaOS! MacOS shows, how we must implement this.

I see no sense in having such a wrapper library.
