hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : New consignment of AmigaOnes soon available
posted by ssolie on 17-Jul-2006 20:58:25 (15938 reads)
We recently received delivery of a small consignment of AmigaOne motherboards for testing prior to redistribution among all AmigaOne dealers worldwide.

Update 18 May 2006 Quantities are limited and it appears that the CPU modules (G4 1.1 GHz for the XE boards) will not be available before the end of June 2006.
We will, of course, need some time to test them and prepare the new configurations, but you will very shortly be able to order a reconditioned AmigaOne from your favourite dealer!

Warning: quantities will be limited.

Don’t forget to bookmark this page for the latest info.

Update 16 July 2006 Some µA1-Cs are already ready to go out to dealers. News of the G4 modules is expected some time next week. Those wishing to trade in their existing G3 800MHz modules should contact their local dealer for a possible trade-in (not all dealers may offer this).

News taken from Amont Informatique.

He has a point though.

Although it is nice that a couple more people can jump in on OS 4 soon because of the extra few boards, it doesn't actually solve anything. We still need an actively produced motherboard before the end of this year.

Yes we do need new hardware to be produced soon. But this is good news because it means that a few more developers will be able to have OS4 to develop on. We desperately need developers to write/port software for our platform so any extra machines that become available is a good thing. For example, maybe the authors of Papyrus could finally get an A1 so that the Papyrus port can finally begin. There are other projects waiting for a machine as well.

When new hardware really does become available, there should be more software available for users to run on the new machines, because of these extra A1s.

I'm just not recommending people buy refurbed prototypes without warranties. There is a really sweet A1 micro on ebay that looks nice though

It sure is.

Realize: You are entitled to you opinion. That's not the issue. The issue is placement of said opinion in threads where it is either OT or simply isn't welcome. Do you honestly think anybody in this thread IS NOT AWARE of the fact that you can buy pegII's?

And where did you see ANY mention that these boards would be without a warranty?

C'mon bro... stop trolling. Play nice with us.

Instead of that reply you could have just pointed out you are no longer a dealer and you recently moved.

I'm not trying to bother you. Just trying to wake everyone up. Don't you guys understand that all these dancing bannanas at vapor ware just encourage people to do it? Its cool though I'll relent.

With no warranty i'm sure.

I strongly suspect that you did not check with the distributor of these boards on that issue. I strongly suspect that you did not check with the each of the dealers selling these boards on that issue. I strongly suspect that you are just advertising for the competition. I strongly suspect that you are just trying to steal customers from Amiga hardware dealers. I strongly suspect that you are just spreading FUD as usual.

I, however, admit that I am not sure of any of this.

@Doodoohead

Not to mention he referred to the boards as XE's when they are Micros.
Now he is using the term "vapor" in his post.
Nice.
Since several people went to the trouble of trying to fill a gap here and
provide replacement parts since last year. Parts that include, but not limited
to these Micro boards as well as the CPU upgrades/replacements.
Frankly it's a slap in the face to the people who do the real work around here.

But I suppose there are a lot of people here for which English is not their
native language, so we must be forgiving.

@ realize

i dont think it matters that these are "repaired" boards, the point is there is hardware available to purchase for those who want it and dont mind paying for it, its not like those who bought NEW A1's got much of a warrenty anyway and im sure people will buy whats made available knowing full well the warrenty situation and its nobody elses place to put them down for choosing to.

Its not about the boards themselfs, its about being able to run OS4. People have been waiting for that for years and this is currently the only way to do it. People are well aware that a full peg system would cost them less but it wont run OS4 and never will so pointing it out over and over is just going to create a bad feeling towards you.

For those lucky enough to get one of these boards when they are available it will be worth every penny, im sure. so please stop pointing out what everybody knows but has no relevence to the topic at hand. it just makes u look like a troll and nothing more.

The Masked Muchacho

Why not just tell the truth? You do not know one way or the other whether there is a warranty. Your baseless opinion being passed off as fact that you "know for sure" is a lie. Feel free to inform us how you "know for sure" that which you don't inquire about. At least my "foolish commenatry" is the truth.

With that said, I think it'd behoove someone to give a dealer a jingle and find out just exactly what, if any, warranty is provided with these boards. From what I've seen over the last few years "reliability" ain't exactly a watchword for the A1's...from batteries that die in months (versus the years I've had batteries on other systems) to boards that won't work with certain combinations of RAM, and not even to get in to DMA, USB and onboard sound issues, the Amiga 1 in any flavor doesn't exactly have a stellar track record.

So finding out what kind of warranty these boards will have is a must, IMO.

Moreover, who will honor it? Eyetech? They're as dead as a doornail as far as anyone can tell.

So, relevant to this thread: as these are refurb boards, what kind of support can be expected?

I've built 3 A1 XEs I know the technology, not only that i've been to Motorolla Labs and talked to THEM about the Teron boards (aka Amiga 1) I dont like the idea of people selling something to Amigans without warranty for hundreds of dollars. Is this note AMIGAWORLD.net or is it Amiga1.net?

realize

To mods

I do realize it appears trollish posting this, but to get the community all excited about boards that were bad and fixed and sell at retail with no warranty is not good imho.

*note : you notice there are no dealers saying : no the boards are great, decent price, and have a warranty - just users saying i'm a troll. If that happens I'll eat my words and apologize. Let us see what happens

I surely think it's nice that some people who really want an OS4 capable machine maybe (!) can buy it.

is it a step forward ? no it's not. More developers that can have a board now ? I doubt that. Why would they invest in a developerboard when it are maybe the last OS4 boards ever ? Do not get me wrong... I do think powervixen will be reality, but anything else I doubt for now. If you really want things to be developed for OS4 then DO NOT BUY these boards if you are just a user. But do not worry, I offered my µA1 and our webmaster (amigaclub.be) also offered his amigaone for use by a developer and we never got any reaction.....

Long story in short: no new boards ----> no development. For now these boards are just "wanna-have-it's",... just like my µA1

@DungeonDealer

The MicroA1s have none of those problems, except being a bit finnicky about memory.

Your comments appear to be regarding the XEs, which is not what is being offered.

Realize said something about these being prototypes as well, which I'd accept against the SEs and even the XEs, but not the Micros.

Chris
