Software News   Software News : Sputnik/KHTML port Update
   posted by jahc on 26-Jul-2006 1:01:42 (11971 reads)
Marcik is currently porting the modern KHTML browser engine to MorphOS. He has given a status update recently with pictures here. He has named his project Sputnik.

The source code is going to amigarized heavily, so an AmigaOS port will be easy afterwards. The AWeb team have already expressed interest in doing this port.

KHTML is used in a number of browers on other platforms already. Including Konquerer and Safari.

There is a bounty on MorphZone if you would like to contribute.

It might be a shock to you then that KHTML part is almost untouched, probably meaning that the Marcik KHTML port won't be of much help to AWEB, or at least much more then it is in its present form.

Even better, so they could start right on

Re-reading it again, who knows!

still no one is forcing you to buy derivative work, at least if one knows that there's actual an open source available just use the original, you can always port it yourself... if it covers the costs of porting is one thing, another is impossible to achieve in this market, so why bother...

@falemagn

Either Pixie doesn't understand what you write or he's jesting with you.

Either way this conversation is starting to get silly don't you think?

I can't understand why the AWeb team is waiting for Marcik to do a MUI wrapper for
MOS before trying to use KHTML in AWeb themselves..

I would hope that all future OS4 browsers would use ReAction instead of MUI.

Does this applies? if it doesn't then all what Fabio talk doesn't hold, and for me there's no need to jump on Marcik work without getting facts straigh, as simple as that, nor proclaiming our opinion based solely on a unsubstantiad claim of what Marcik is going to do with his program..

Pixie, I could yet again point out how you yet again misunderstood me, but I'm afraid this is a never ending process.

I'd say let's leave it at that.

No, that would imply that finally some hardware for AOS4 would be available so Marcik can buy it and use it to make Sputnik for AOS4.

I never heard that he wanted to port himself or anything but if this is the thing then i am sure me and marcik can make a deal so that he can get hardware right away (more or less).

Since youre in touch with him (or so it seems), feel free to tell him to email me if he is interested in an A1 to develop/test on.

cheers

Please explain this.. Please give me a only ONE reason - why not MUI? Spare me "statements" like "reaction is a main GUI for OS4" ;)

Only if the teacher is a she and of course she would have to be at least on par with my avatar, nothing less!

Seems like a perfectly good reason to me. For all we know, MUI, as a separate product, might not be included in future versions of the OS. Just look what happened with the speech libraries back in the day.

Of course ReAction might not be either, and there was some talk about Cairo a while back.

@ministerq

As you said it's the default GUI for OS4.
ReAction hasn't separate GUI settings for every application (a nice thing back in the 90's)
making a change of themes on OS4 change all applications look.
MUI is also not controlled by Hyperion or some of the OS4 team making it difficult to control
what path the development of MUI will take. The author is much more close to MOS in this
regard, even if he has "dropped out" of the MOS dev team.

Yes, some things aren't great with ReAction. But if developers work on improving the current
classes and adding new ones I'm quite sure it will be really good in the future.

Also I just love the default look of OS4 applications with ReAction

EDIT: btw I'm totally against multiple GUI systems for any OS.

One reason - personal preference. Like with so many things, a lot of people have personal preference for one or the other thing.

- changing the the core of a browser with something completly different might be more work than just writing a new browser around the core

- changing the GUI-system in a big app not designed for easy GUI-exchange is probraly allmost as much fun

- changing the GUi-system to one only (still) supported for one part of the potential cosumer-base isn't the smartest thing to do

- the fact that this GUI-system is dreaded by pretty much everybody else isn't helpfull either, and it's limitations compared to the "old" GUI are the icing on that cake

- I somehow doubt that the GUI is the only "wrapper" needed by khtml in order to run on Amigaoid OSes

- wether the income gernerated by selling it 50$ a piece will ever exceed what would have been in th bounty-pot by that time is atleast questionable

So, if my, Marcik, or anyone programmer personal preferences is related with MUI, then nobody can do anything with this. ;) Simple.

If that's his preference, then no.

I still hope there can be a ReAction wrapper aswell in the future.

@Samwel

AmigaOS has a history of several differen GUI's,
Triton, Reaction, MUI, and the latest, Feelin, just to mention a few.

Why do you think OS4 would be any different?
