Amy'05 update part 1
Speed & upgrades

This is the first of two updates on the Project Prometheus/Amy'05 design that we will be releasing this week. The second part before BB4, is scheduled for Wednesday 13th September 2006.

Read more for details... (mod note)

The PowerPC CPU has been improved upon, we now have an IBM 750GL @ 800 MHz with 1 MByte of L2 cache, against the previous 512K of cache. The design of the motherboard will support 750GL CPUs upto 1 GHz core speed in the future. The 800 MHz part was chosen as the baseline as it represents the best price/performance mix.

To keep the system cool, both the CPU and our Northbridge the Tundra TSI107 need heatsinks, but the TSI-107 does not require a fan in normal use. The Troika team developed a thermostatically controlled fan system for the CPU and optional case fan. Amy has a dedicated fan controller IC, this will allow quiet operation, if allowable by system usage patterns.

SDRAM DIMM detection has been improved compared to previous OS4 capable systems. The TSI107 provides the necessary features to more accurately setup the SDRAM timing based upon the Serial Presence Detect (SPD) ROM parameters of the installed memory stick(s). This will ease the purchasing of suitable RAM for Amy'05.

In keeping with the speed increase, the graphics slot has been doubled in speed. The PCI slot for the graphics adaptor now runs at 66 MHz, yielding a maximum throughput of 264 MByte/sec. This provides comparable speed to the AGP 1X slot.

From previous experience, this bus speed has been sufficient to run 1280x1024 Open GL 2D/3D graphics @ 60 Hz with no issues using the ATI Radeon 9700 series and above graphics cards.

Only one PCI slot supports the 66 MHz speed and there is the appropriate bridge chip and logic to connect to the system 33 MHz PCI bus.

That is all for this update, the second and final update is on Wednesday.

800 MHz! Awesome!
1 MB cache! Awesome!

Disappointments:
No Altivec
No AGP
1 Gig ram limit
HEAT a problem at 9 watts??????
Few slots

As an entry level and low cost AOS4.0 Amiga,
EXCELLENT

the 66MHz PCI slot will be roughly equivalent to the speed of the AGP in your A1XE. yeah its AGP x2, but its performance is crippled by the ArticiaS.

what do you want more than 1gig of ram for?? we'll have a virtual memory system soon. anyway, I've got all my net software loaded, about 9 tabs open in ibrowse, my music playing in the background, text editors, all sorts of other stuff, and I've still got 310mb free (out of 512mb).

who says heat is a problem? pretty much everything needs some form of cooling these days.. wether its a heatsink, fan, or both.. its not a "problem".

as for "few slots".. your A1XE needs a sound card, and a sil0680 ATA card, which only leaves one free slot.

Edited HWGA- inappropriate comment removed. End edit. There sure are a lot of radical feelings inhere.

However back to the point... I am sure there is a good reason for not using the newer parts on a budget OS4 board... Price, overkill, availibilty,...
Also DDR is not done before on OS4 and we are talking about an entrylevel board...
If this is your first board you bring on the market would you want hardware bugs on it like on previous OS4boards (or Peg's for setting the record straight).
It would also boost the price... what is not wanted on entrylevel I think.

And why nagging about AGP when we already have PCI express ?... as long there is a digital output on the graphic board it's ok for me.

I think he mean there is a AGP Slot on the PCI bus.

So, a Pegasos II reloaded, with G3 only, and (at least) three years later? I'm amazed by this innovation and performance...

BTW, back then, on 2005 autumn, when Troika announced their Amy'05 board, i made a bet with myself, that i'll pay a beer to all Hungarian OS4'ers, when there will be a board released from them before 2006 september/october. Looks like i'm winning.

Now i'm making the same bet: a beer to all Hungarian OS4'ers, if Troika releases a public, final, purchaseable board before september, 2007. Remember my word!

Hi Everyone!

This will be an excellent true replacement to the A1200. If they can keep
the cost down, that would be great. Let's see if someone can get this
baby in an all in one case.

@Chain-Q

I have a better idea! If they release a board before September 2007, you have to buy one Would you bet on that?

@Cobra:
No way. But i'll accept free boards for better possibility to work on Free Pascal.

I aint even got that on my XE.

I have had a firewire card in it since my XE's creation.

with hard to find and expensive SDRAM and PCI GFX cards...

Newegg has some PCI video cards and
SDRAM memory. I won't comment on the expensiveness, but at least I didn't have the hard to find experience part.

Quote:
why the hell isn't it possible to have a proper AGP slot ? and DDR ? what's the point in designing such a board in 2K6 ?

If the northbridge doesn't have an AGP port, you need to hack it like Bplan did with the Pegasos2. Maybe in their goal to make this an inexpensive board they didn't want to do that. For DDR, maybe they didn't want to use a more expensive northbridge supporting it. "Cheap" relatively speaking, and high-performance are mutually exclusive, especially in our tiny market. Troika obviously wants this to be relatively inexpensive compared to a high-erformance board. Think A1200 vs A4000T. Why didn't A1200 have lots of Zorro slots? Same question for a different era, but wrong for that particlar machine. If you want AGP or DDR, yu don't want the "budget" (relatively speaking) board.

Besides, if you want something easy to find and/or high-performance today, you don't want AGP at all. You want PCI-Express.

I thought that it would happen, so decided I will buy one of these, anyone know what cases fit this motherboard? Looking for the smallest suitable case for it!

Otherwise you would accept every bet...
