Software News   Software News : Prerelease 3 of Cygnix available
   posted by CygnusEd on 8-Feb-2007 18:25:15 (6004 reads)
The third prerelase of the X-Window environment Cygnix is now available on OS4-depot.

This are the most important changes:

* Support for GTK 2 and some related libraries. GTK 1 and 2 has now a working localisation.

* New window manager Enlightenment. Supports themes, virtual desktops, is highly configurable
and much more...

* Soundserver Esound from the gnome project for audio support.

* A documentation in amigaguide format.

* Everything is now PPC native. The GeekGadgets drawer was removed.

* The unix shell abc-shell is now included (Thanks to Henning Nielsen Lund!)

* Bugfixes.

@Valiant

Please check, if the script flag of the file "Start_xmahjong.bat" is set. This is important.
If it still does not work, please use Snoopy (Available on OS4-depot) to find out, if the file is found.

@Arnie

Very strange - what did you write into the subject?
But if it does not work, thank you for your help anyway

Yep, it was the script flag. Set that bit on all the .bat files and now everything's working just fine.

Yes, it would be still interresting for me. Maybe this helps me to understand the problem!

@CygnusEd:

I already have a working SDK installation and several Linux ports (GMP, Kaffe, etc) use the directory structure of the SDK (for things like /usr, etc).

If I run your Cygnix-Startup, many of my existing assigns will be lost and I won't even be able to use gcc and the SDK for OS4 development.

I would dearly like to be able to merge the X11 binary components into the SDK, using the existing directory structure.

Have you considered merging Cygnix into the SDK structure?

@ tonyw

This is a basic problem of Cygnix, but at the moment I don't see a way to integrate it into the SDK for several reasons:

* The libs and includes needed for Cygnix are mostly incompatible to the files included in the SDK and the other way round! I need my own environment.

* I'm not part of the OS4 SDK team. I always had to adapt my SDK to a new OS4-SDK every time.

* Cygnix should work with no dependencies to the OS4 SDK.

...and some other reasons.

If you want both, working with a normal OS4 SDK and with the Cygnix SDK, I see no other way to delete the Cygnix related lines in the user-startup and launch cygnix-startup if you need it.

@ Arnie

Damn - didn't work again. Are you able to send mails to others?

@CygnusEd:

That's a bummer. I have been looking forward to using Kaffe's gtk output with Cygnix and I'm sure others will be interested also.

I'll have a look at the Cygnix tree and see what the differences are. Perhaps we can work something out together, it's in both our interests.

Just out of curiosity, re porting X11 as an rootless server. As I understood it modern X11 uses Cairo, couldnt we (by we I meant you obviously use the already ported Cairo to perform this task?

Mark

@ tonyw

Because of it's concept, cygnix will never be really integrated into the OS.
But if you have some ideas, please let me know.

@ Mark

Cairo (maybe) could be used for a GTK 2 wrapper, but not for a port of the X11 system! Cairo does not contain event handling, so still a lot of things have to be done and i have not the time to do this.
