How do those figures compare to the A1's?

P.S. its good to see that they have a board running in some form.

I am not technical enough to understand what these figures mean, but I am glad to see some progress with your product and await it's arrival with great eagerness

PS: Any update on when product is expected to be available and what is the situation with OS4 licence?

Sorry, had to ask!

seems to work out around the speed of powermac G3 at the same speed with 100mhz bus, (worked out roughly in my head based on results from 400mhz and 300mhz G3s so i may be waaaaaaay off)

Thats not so bad for an embedded system and pretty decent for a low end Amiga system too but they are only synthetic benchmarks and may be completely meaningless.

a 400 mhz G3 with 66mhz bus and a pci radion 7000 has been serving me well for quite a while and can do pretty much anything i need (plays DVDs, photoshop, rips CDs) so i would be happy with that kind of performance (the other differences in the core may make more difference to overall performance though, it is only a 603ish core).

That Sam440EP memory test document only shows performance under Linux. Is there a separate document that shows performance under OS4?

@jahc

Due to the extremely slow Articia S these memory speed values compares well to
any A1 oth there. Even G4 A1's. But the CPU computation speed won't of course.

But compared to say a Pegasos2 they are pretty slow. But these two are aimed at
completely different markets so that's not strange really.

Let's hope they get success with SAM so we may see the high end board they're
designing getting released.

@Jorkany

If the port isn't finished how could a OS4 test be done?

Btw does it matter which OS the test is done on to present hardware speed???

I want to see OS4 memory test as well. Not because they'll be different, but because that will mean that they have OS4 running on SAM440.

I'd like to see the same benchmarks, run under the same OS, for the A1 XE, uA1 and Efika. The first two should be interesting to get a feel for how the new board is compared to the older ones (a bit faster/a lot faster/a bit slower/a lot slower)?, and the last one to get an apples to apples comparison with Genesi's equivalent hardware.

To prevent flames and accusations, these benchmarks should probably be done by an impartial third party (ars technica?)

Instead of saying "compares well" and such things, how about just giving us the numbers? if you dont have the numbers then you're just speculating like any one of us can.

Benchmarks for an unavailable PPC board running Linux...how exciting. Zzzzz....

Far from complete, but some benchmarks are here:

Additional memory results from A1s, pegs, etc, not directly comparable, and I'm unsure on the specifics of Sam's 'stream' test run, but:
http://amigaworld.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=10902&forum=33#144046

If anyone is still running Linux on their A1, you could duplicate the test performed on the SAM and post results...

@jorkany
prior tests have shown memory performance to be pretty much identical between OSes, at least in the above link.

Without even looking at the figures (), I would say that it is *far* better.

Or ....

If the legal battle between Amiga Inc and Hyperion prevents Sam to get
a licence how genious would it be to show test results from OS4.

..it's a matter of what you believe...

@All
i think people misunderstood the point of these tests.

what i gather from these pdf's. is that the Team have managed to tweak the performance of the evaluation board. so the final "retail" board of Sam440 have better memory performance, than the evaluation board.

not by much, but in lowend, every bit counts.

Or the difference in speed, might be due to a Faster cpu on the Sam440. 667mhz. looks rather good for an entry level OS4 machine.

This means and also that Sam440 is running Linux... most of you said it will not say the light of the day. Instead.

you can see A1 values in Amigans.net news comment:

@Ikir
Who said it wouldn't see the light of day? ("Most of you" seems a bit far fetched.)

P.S. Glad to hear that Linux is (at least partially) running on the Sam. Now if they can just get it finished soon...

Conclusion, the board scales not that good.

The Reference board is faster then the Sam440EP 667Mhz in the Triad benchmark.

It does because sometimes OS can choose to use different strategy for memory setup (not sure how to describe it in english...). On Pegasos 2 this affects some results.
