Software News   Software News : New Sputnik Beta released!
posted by Zardoz on 10-Mar-2007 0:53:56 (6527 reads)
The second beta of Sputnik has been released for MorphOS.

It can be found on the project's website.

Sputnik is a KHTML-based browser for Amiga-like systems, currently only available for MorphOS but an AmigaOS4 port is looking more and more likely.

This new version supports cookies, file downloading, fast-links, SLL, spoofing and significantly improves stability.
It requires the latest released MUI beta (22/9/2006) and a fairly up to date version of the Ambient desktop.

Note that this software is still under development, many features you would expect from a browser might be missing and you should read the documentation before using it.

@jiyong
It is possible to use OS4's internal font rendering thus not needing TTE2 (which I hope to see for OS4 anyway).
MUI4 is in development but not an absolute requirement. Please email Marcin if you need it confirmed/explained further.

Is this an objective fact or just your assumption?

There was a January notification that development has been stopped, three months after collecting a significant bounty. Stated reason was that not enough users are purchasing OS4 software. Good reason (and very true) - but a daring excuse so shortly after raising a bounty. It can not have been a sudden discovery that we are few, that was obvious before. Bounty should be refunded. In the case of the Sputnik bounty, it all goes through an escrow, that's a much better setup.

An escrow is a good setup to protect the donators.

Anyway discussing AVD is way off topic. Kind of interesting though. Perhaps one of you will start it's own thread and get it out of the Sputnik news release.

As I mentioned in this thread, the 8 month bounty deadline expires before Marcik's own deadline for a stable, feaature-rich MorphOS version of Sputnik (end of year), which is sort of strange...

However, if the OS4 deadline were extended to say, 2 months after a stable, feature-rich MorphOS release, the bounty would be completed once it was seen that Sputnik is indeed a successful project on the main platform.

You are right about the deadline.

I made it 8 months because I think we can collect the money in that time. That would give Marcik some time with OS4 before his own deadline for the stable feature rich version.

If we're still missing a few $$, the period will simply be extended as it's written in the bounty description. When Marcik delivers a final MOS version I'm sure it will be no problem to collect whatever we're missing for the OS4 port.

I won't be donating to this project for the one simple fact that I don't agree with his 'Demands' of a certain cash settlement before he even thinks about supporting a platform that he doesn't even like!

The source code of the LGPL part is already there, I don't think it would take much for a dedicated programmer to follow on from what he has done. $4000 is quite frankly taking the p!ss and I'd personally let him keep his MorphOS port and let it reside on that platform.

A more worthy donation would be to the IBrowse team for IBrowse3 instead lining some capitalistic Polish dude's pockets who's making a fortune off other people's work, i.e. Nokia, KHTML team etc.

Tis all wrong I tell ya!

The LGPL sources are mostly untouched, the whole work is the BSD licensed and closed OS wrapper, with MUI, Symbian stuff, everything required to easily port any new updates over.

The capitalistic Polish dude is a student in a country with low wages and while I understand that many people believe it's unfair that he's asking $4000 for the easy part of the port, which is fair enough, I do not believe that giving $4000 to the iBrowse or any other team would give the same return, a KHTML MUI custom class for anyone to use.

Moreover. he's not making money on the KHTML sources, he's making money on something completely new, the wrapper.

I wouldn't mind a dedicated OS4 developer to follow Marciks steps and do a KHTML based browser, problem is just that no one seems interested in doing the job or it would have been done least a year ago or supplied by Hyperion themselves.

If you think $4000 is taking the p!ss try to calculate Marciks hourly income on Sputnik for OS4. Remember it includes the initial port which can't be done properly in ten minutes as some people seems to think. It will also include all future upgrades and Sputnik will be freeware.

Whether or not the price is fair compared to what the MOS team paid is a matter of how you look at it. I think it's wrong when people think that because our community is small everything has to be free, and any commercial approach is bad. IMHO this communist thinking will get us no where and lead to no new software.

Now go buy your IBrowse 3.0!!
I will stick to v2.4 until Sputnik and a new IBrowse version appears, then choose what suit me best. Choice is good (and a KHTML MUI class is nice to have)!

Don't take this the wrong way, I admire people doing development work because of pure interest and good intentions, it's just that in my world there should be room for a commercial approach aswell.
Luckily we all live in a free world (don't we?) and people can decide for themselves what to support.

If $4k is much, then the $12k or so for the amizilla where progress is indicated each ½ year by a statusupdate, is surely more?

people should also bear in mind, that this bounty is not only for another browser, but also for the ability to have the webcore.mcc, so all other programs under os4 could take advantage of the khtml rendering engine. so even the iBrowse team might in the future benefit from this bounty, if iBrowse where made to ue the webcore.mcc, it could raise the sales a bit too.

i donated to this, not only to get a better browser, but because of the future prospects of an open library for all to use.

Marcik is doing a great job on Sputnik. If you guys
don't like the terms for a port to AmigaOS 4.0 then
just leave us alone. The Amiga(tm) people complain
alot about MorphOS and how that is just a bad
clone of AmigaOS and not the real deal. So if
you dislike MorphOS so much, why don't you
just leave us alone? But nooo. When MorphOS
finally gets a killer-app that noone seems capable
of beeting on the Amiga(tm) side you all come
crawling over to our side, begging for a port.

It's posts like Slash's that gives the entire
Amiga(tm) side a very bad reputation.

@ironfist
And comments like yours contribute in what way?
Not really fair to judge all of the Amiga(tm) users by a few posts regarding one application.

Why can't you instead be happy that OS4 users contribute (quite a lot) to the development of Sputnik giving Marcin an incitement to develop it more, better, faster for both platforms?

personally i don't see any problems to purchase IB2.4 (just re-registerd lately) AND contribute to Sputnik. (just done as well... directly to Marcin for personal reasons)

Considering that even the MOS version is far from the "dayly use" stage (not that much but it still) your contribution will help both "camps" anyway.

Hence whatever way of donation you will chose, will fit your needs.

Heck lately i was in needs of a RDP server for winXP home and you know how much it would costs? 299 US$ :-/ (sold probably in thousands copies)

My comment will probably help some narrow-minded users
to understand that we are one Community and must help each
other
if we are ever gonna get anywhere.

I don't really care for either AmigaOS 4.0 nor MorphOS. I have
machines to run both of them and none of them can put away
my Mac Mini on the desktop. My mA1 is just a toy and my
Pegasos-machines run Linux.

However, I like the friendship and discussions we have here
and it would be a big loss if the Amiga Community would keep
fighting against each other over this and that.

Unfortunately Slash isn't the only narrow-minded guy here and
therefore I addressed all those who can understand that I mean
them. There is a difference here between the (quite many
actually.. ) people who dislikes everything MorphOS and the
rest of the Amiga(tm) people (too few.. ) who are open-minded
and wants the Community to go forward - not just their product.

So why don't you set up a bounty for IBrowse3 instead of insulting someone with an ability to bring new software for AmigaOS? If you feel you can program something like Sputnik yourself, why don't you do that yourself instead of insulting others? Remember, you can always do it for free if you hate "capitalistic dudes".

ironfist, I totally agree that we are one Community. However, at the same time you say: "leave US alone", "you all come crawling over to OUR side, begging for a port", etc.
Can't you see your way of expressing will NOT help any narrow-minded users to understand anything? It just provokes them to start another flame war and I believe this was not your intention.
