Announcement   Announcement : IOSPIRIT GmbH quits the Amiga market
posted by tomazkid on 24-Mar-2007 1:36:31 (8360 reads)
From IOSPIRIT website:

IOSPIRIT GmbH ends its Amiga business on the 1st of April 2007.

In the future, IOSPIRIT GmbH will be focusing solely on its Mac® products. In order to better serve the needs of that market and to be able to process incoming orders faster and more efficiently, a reimplementation of the shop system is currently being worked on.

The reasons for the decision to no longer operate in the Amiga market are as follows:

* we want to fully commit to developing Mac® products in the future.
* the big additional overhead that would be necessary to integrate (permanent) support for download and package versions of Amiga software into the new concept and the drawbacks that would come with this for the majority of our customers - which today are Mac® users.
* the decreasing demand for Amiga products and the the situation of the Amiga market in general.

IOSPIRIT's own Amiga titles will no longer be available beyond April, 1st, 2007 - except of course for remaining stock at dealers. The future distribution as well as development and support of IBrowse will be handled directly by the IBrowse development team. You can find their website at http://www.ibrowse-dev.net/.

Many thanks go to

* all of our customers and users for being loyal for so many years, which has made the development of our Amiga titles possible in the first place.
* all developer and scene buddies for the many interesting, reflective, funny, educational, helpful and amicable moments, anecdotes and experiences.
* all those, who have always been there to help with mental and moral support and an independant, second opinion.

We wish all of you all the best for the future and would be happy to see you again over in the Mac® market. If you are interested in what we are currently working on, you can find our Mac® products at http://www.iospirit.com/.

Sincerly,

Felix Schwarz

@walkero

Wow!

All kidding and all sarcasm aside, that has got to be one of the most ignorant and uninformed posts I have read in a very long time.

They really fleeced us! They took there $10's and $10's of dollars and ran making us look pretty stupid. WE'RE SUCH FOOLS!!

Amazing....

OS4 could infact have been out years ago if it was not for Amiga INCs stubbornness when it comes to license.

Indeed, they could have had Ralph and Franks work as the new OS4.0 in 2001.

That's unfortunate, as IIRC, IOSpirit was also how IBrowse was being sold, which some people are/were still buying. I bought all of IOSpirits software somewhat recently, most of which works (once you get past the install) on OS4.

Sad to see, but not surprising at all. While it really is trivial to add most products to a web shop, I guess Felix is seeing the same thing as many of us- what's the point? No hardware, 'final' is named 'update' for some odd reason and has more incompatibilities, including major programs, compared to previous versions, and there remains no hardware that can be purchased. While I hope this changes, I don't fault anyone for not wanting to spend their time or money on something like that...

Well, hyperion has been telling us that OS4 has been pretty much final for around 2 years now, but did not want to release it until there was hardware available.

You're saying MorphOS was finished 2001?
The current released version isn't finished (missing some major stuff like TCP/IP stack) so
how could this be?
Note I'm not saying anything bad about how MorphOS works or how it compares to OS4.

Amiga Inc. is surely to blame for this by impeding the potential Amiga market by having brat fights with Genesi and not actually working together for the good of Amiga's future. The Amiga platform is a train wreck waiting to happen (unfortunately). The computer industry has lost the real excitement it once had back in the '80s when there was a flourish of computer companies (like Commodore, Atari and Tandy) that built innovative products out of wild imaginations. Now we're stuck with an unchallenged and lawless monopoly (Microsoft) that the US justice system lost interest and steam in punishing properly (depending on what political party is in charge currently). I'm surely hoping that both Mac and Linux markets will revive the excitement of the computer industry that was once apparent.

No, of course not. I simply meant that the 2 or 3 years development time spent on getting Hyperions OS4 to the same level as MorphOS could have been saved by using MorphOS in the first place (As was originally supposed to happen before Sheepy and Billy got delusions of grandeur, lest people forget!)

Think of all the cool apps and games Hyperion could have been writing during that time. So much has been lost.

You make it sound as if Bill and Fleecy killed some grand plan part way through its execution. The fact is an agreement was never reached. From what I can gather it was due to Amiga's unreasonable (or more specifically non-sensical demands).

I can't see the situation being workable though. Ralph was never going to give up MorphOS, and Amiga Inc. were never going to hand away their precious IP. Even if MorphOS had of become OS4, I'd imagine that things would have worked out just about the same anyway.

If you look back at the very first year, we should be running AmigaDE on our bPlan AmigaOnes. If you look at plan B then you should see that we should all be running AmigaOS 4.5 on Escana A1200 hybrid AmigaOnes which incorporates AmigaDE.

The delusions of Amiga Inc. started long before they even looked at the classic stuff. I mean, they honestly thought that everyone would be queuing up to get a boing ball sticker on their CE products and computer systems.

I spent the spring of 2001 dreaming about playing Hyperion's port of Worms Armageddon on H+P's OS4 running on an AmigaOne. Oh well...

When I think about it, is Amiga Inc different than Amiga Technologies from 90s? What Amiga Technologies with their only employee, Petro Nobody, contributed to Amiga in years 1995-1999? No new hardware, no new software, new nothing. Some minor titles were produced by other companies but in 1999/2000 Amiga was already pretty much dead. All companies were in bankcruptcy and users gone.

So... was/is Amiga Inc doing worse than Amiga Technologies did?

They did atleast try to do something and did at least continue to manufactor 1200 units. Also remember the amiga boxer, so they did atleast produce a prototype, while current amiga inc has done absolutely nothing so far other than let hyperion and eyetech do it for them.

I still have absolutely no idea on what they earn on this behavior.

Me neither, as DiscreteFX says they should sell to someone who cares or atleast wants to do some business with AOS4.

When you contact Amiga and are lucky to get a reply (one of hundred mails) they tell you about all the cool developments they are about to release. I doubt we will ever see anything though!

There is a way some companies can still provide amiga support and that is simply just pass it to a lower priority while entering Mac/PC market.

Open source it ?! I hope not ! It would mean death to that software anyway. I hope they allow other parties/coders to continue development.

It would be nice if Felix took his sources and documentation of VHI and made it LGPL... it could be a nice gesture.
