How far is the development (paper work only, or do you have arunning eval board from PA semi already)?
Why no integrated audio (the flexibility bull is just that - bull, if you wanna high end audio no one keeps you away to add that anyway (a build in audio is not an obstacle))?
Who writes the gfx divers (assumed OS4 should run on it)
Who adds SMP to OS4?
Who does the 64 bit support?

There are many open questions. Happy if those will be resolved...

Seems to make perfect sense to me. I don't quite understand what you want with more than one old PCI slot anyway? If this came out I sure won't be scrounging around for tired old PC bits to put in it anyway.

A nice announcement but we need to be sure there's actually developments made/or real products behind this announcement.

When will you show us the board?
And how about other relevant questions like which OS it will run, what "complete offering" means and who's developing drivers?

Specs are interesting, although the number/choices of PCI(-E) slots are interesting. I see no onboard sound, and unsure if PCIE sound cards are available yet, so it's likely the single PCI slot is taken by a sound card..so much for catweasel I suppose.

I'd also love to know who is going to:
- Make OS4 able to drive an SMP system.
- write code in uBoot and/or OS4 (likely both) for the new CPU and chips
- write PCI-Express graphics drivers for 'some card' that it may or may not come with.
- write the NIC driver for the gig ethernet

It's a bit of $$, and interesting that ti's still tagged as 'a complete system' yet no mention of how much RAM, hard drive, etc come with it, if any. But, it _is_ modern. I remain skeptical about seeing them for purchase, or even making it to the point of OS4 running on this, but...we'll see. If it does come as 'a complete system,' _including_ OS4, I can certainly see people willing to spend the $$ on it.

PCI express is the way forward and I'm sure that this time next year PCI express sound cards will be commonplace.

Everybody is asking about specs such as memory and hard drive size but I'd imagine this would be decided closer to the launch as the prices are volatile.

This is very exciting news for the Amiga (and and maybe Linux?) community .

Very interesting, though, but i'm starting to think that it will not be AmigaOS4, but AmigaOS 5 it will run on...It certainly will be very interesting to see

12.000 NOK for the main motherboard is heck a lot of money, but it's really worth it, and a complete system might as well come up to 15.000 NOK!

Don`t worry about slots. There are new Creative PCI-e soud cards. So there`s still that one regular PCI slot for everything you might want to put in.

I don't understand these Questions about Memory/Hard Drives, the price is for the board only, you buy a big hard drive/loads of memory if you want it. Same for a fancy case, if that sort of thing floats your boat.

I'd buy one.

According to the news item;

This new system will be offered at a suggested retail price of $ 1498.00 and be a complete offering excluding monitor in a finished design that will provide customers with everything they need to get started.

Sounds to me that except for a monitor it does come with a HD, RAM, case, PSU, keyboard and mouse.

No they won't - at least, not at the prices we're used to paying for sound cards. Most PCI audio chips were designed in the days when on-board audio either wasn't fitted or was some basic software-driven AC97 thing that sucked so badly lots of people needed something better.

Those days are gone. 99% of non-server motherboards ship with audio capabilities that are fine for most users. The market for add-in sound cards is tiny, so there's no economic incentive to design PCIe audio chips.

There are also technical problems with audio devices on PCIe.

PCIe is designed for graphics and high data transfer, but audio sends very small packets and the overhead can be very big! Moving the data across PCIe is much, much higher than PCI. So what we have to do is go back to the drawing board and work on the transport part of the chip and re-design it to add more silicon to overcome some of the problems we had with PCIe. So for us to come up with a PCIe solution is going to take a while because we have to overcome the problems we're facing with that bus. "

I happen to think of something. This trial between Amiga Inc and Hyperion. I can only imagine that Amiga Inc wants AmigaOS4 back in their house, or at least the important source-codes to speed up AmigaOS 5 to an immerdiate release. It's possible that Amiga Inc might have better people to work on these things..

It could be that Amiga Inc finally has gone very serious this time, and really proving it this time. Of course, they could have informed us about what this trial against Hyperion is all about. I can only hope that the trial will end up good for everybody, but that wasn't really the topic either, as the topic was about this Amiga

That can perhaps be worked around by using an USB-soundcard.

From an overall system cost perspective it didn't make any sense to integrate it into the design. Adding a low end chip would cost more than a card. Integrating a high end audio chip would would have added cost that not all customers would have wanted. A potential market for these boards is for low power consuming 1U servers, where sound, gfx, etc aren't required and only represent added cost with no value to the customer.

Its been a World of Wonders and now its An Amiga World once more.
This new Dual PA Power PC Amiga System is a beast, in fact the Amiga 4000 is still a beast of
a system booting half the time it takes windows to load.

The way forward for us now is, Amiga Inc and Hyperion will sort out a fair an reasonable
deal for both to make money from the deal at a cost to both parties ironing out the nuts and
bolts.

IN THE MEAN TIME:
I would like to see this system on my desk ASAP anyway possible, i want it sitting next
to My 500, A3000 & A4000 + PC, so anyone that can point to me to the PayPal now button
is going to be rewarded in heaven.

Also as far as OS4 or OS5 is concerned I want a copy from someone willing to sell theirs
or from someone willing to release a Trail Version with annoying fetures even.
Its a must have.

I can see now that in 2 months time, this dream will be full filled.
