There is a new Version of WinArosLight [15MB]

This Time it comes with Installation and De-Installation Program.

The Setup Program will create a shortcut on the Desktop.
It has never been easier to try AROS...

Of course qemu slows it down.

True, but AROS is a clone of an OS designed to run on 7Mhz processors, and most of the applications I've seen for it wouldn't be out of place on a 68k. Unless they've managed to include some incredible bloat (which doesn't seem to be the case) then it should fly on any half-modern computer, even emulated.

BTW does anyone know how to change the default theme to one of the other ones in THEMES: ? I've tried changing theme.var in envarc: and resetting, but that just seems to load a default 3.x theme.

Not that much of a difference compared to a 1.8Ghz AMD64 3000+, don't you think? ;)

I thought it was 3ghz

Emulation.

Great. With such detailed explanation, everything is so clear to me

Do you expect me to type it into Google for you (first link is a lengthy Wikipedia article on Qemu)?

This might help you changing the Theme

Alternatively, just change the THEME Assign in Startup-Sequence

Can't get it; it emulates full PC? Well, my pc is full. I have MB, gfx card, sound card... Even keyboard and mouse :)

No, I don't think you do get it!

QEMU is an emulator and you might as well be running on Sparc, for all it matters to QEMU's speed. It is not using a your CPU natively like a virtualisation program like VMWare.

QEMU is slooow.

If you want a comparison, I suggest you install Windows XP on QEMU. That will be no fun whatsoever. AROS and Haiku are the only OSes I've ever tried on QEMU that are remotely usable.

As for running on a 7mhz CPU, well I'd like to see you run Workbench 3.1 on an A500 in the year 2007 and not be surprised how slow it is! Add in a high resolution display with 32bit icons, networking, USB and the other improvements AROS has made... well, good luck.

Chris

Yep. I had some version, the same look like this one.

Oh really? Care to post a screenshot? I'd love to see how you got themes before everyone else!

I didn't say anything about themes. The look of os is not so important when it is slow and unusable.

Sorry, that's what I understood by the 'same look'.

How quick do you think Linux would run in QEMU compared to on an AmigaOne?

Chris

I remember finding OS3.1 a bit slow on a stock standard A1200/HD40. It wasn't until I installed an 030 accelerator that I found it nice to use.

I found the speed of AROS under QEMU to be acceptable about on par with the original A1200 experience .

My first impressions of AROS are positive. I think if AmigaOS4 never comes out we have a good base to fall back on. In some ways I think AROS it is better that AmigaOS as it is x86 and open source. I simply can not see a future in PPC for desktop now that MAC has pulled out. Remember that 68k died very soon after MAC pulled out of that.

@Heinz

I gave WinArosLight a try yesterday. This was my first experience with AROS. Although I found moving windows around to be quite slow, I was quite impressed with the overall experience.

Of course it is slow because of QEMU. (It emulates a full PC)

Ahh... that would explain the slowness I saw. I thought at first that it might be due to my old HP pavilion 7850.

I was wondering if there is an option in the GUI setup to drag windows without contents. In effect all you would see while moving the window is an outline or rectangle with no contents inside. When you stop moving the window, the contents appear again. QNX 6.2 had this feature and made it operate much faster on my old HP. OS4 also has this feature, but I don't need to use it, as my MicroA1 is fast enough.

I also downloaded a recent "nightly build" of i386-pc-boot-iso but could not boot from the CDROM ISO image. Might try again sometime.

I'm sure there is.
Even removing opaque commodity from wbstartup will make moving windows faster.
Just ask at aros-exec.org

Sometimes the nighly build fail. Just try another day.
Thats the price to pay with the recent increase of activity on aros.
