For the time being, you can go without it, but future OS updates might require python. Besides, there will be programs that make use of the SOBJS feature. I would recommend repatitioning your harddrive. If you start to move directories around, future updates will surely fail unless you do some manual work to install them.

As I mentioned in my other post, I installed everything except Python and the Sobjs until I can backup and repartition my "System:" partition. However, I should be able to reassign SOBJS: and PYTHON: to another partition and place the C:Python binary in another directory that is in my AmigaDOS search "path" unless it's hardcoded to work from OS4: . I know the Installer doesn't seem to respect some user reassignments of System: directories but hopefully everything else will do so.

@Xenic

I don't think there is such a thing like 'OS4:xxx' hardcoded anywhere (my boot partition isn't called OS at all, it's called System), instead it might be something that tries to look into 'SYS:xxx'.. Did you tried add to assign SYS: maybe that can help you ?

Also I think you took the thing in the reverse order, those assign wasn't meant to enable user to relocate them but rather to help adding things to system location without the need to copy things into system locations (f.e. adding librarys to the system without the need to put them into SYS:Libs).
But that's only my POV, I never thought about doing it the reverse way...

@Rachy,

Thanks! I am already using the PPC javascript library, but after installing the update to OS4, I noticed that there was still a listing for the old javascript library in the Petunia blacklist. That raised the question in my mind as to whether there were any new recommendations about what to blacklist.

@Hyperion and all its various associated developers: Thanks for this update, especially the stack check! Anything which allows my wife to save her work before rebooting reduces the amount of frustrated screaming around the house (slightly).

Excellent news! And a nice early birthday present too!

I'm glad to see that OS4 is still being actively worked on despite everything else that is going on.

A big thank you to everyone at Hyperion!

Kind regards,

Francis

Yes, I had precisely the same thing happen. As you say, once the "Volume" names are made different the "problem" is solved

The installer just unpacks the archive to SYS:. You should normally not move them elsewhere, but the assigns are used elsewhere so it will work.

Installed it, everything seems to be just fine, USB front ports were shut down which seemed a bit odd, but there you go.

Now someones mentioned it, it does seem a bit brighter! Probably just my imagination of course...

Suprised it's not version 4.1 though, but not as suprising as the fact it's just come out to be honest!

USB now adheres to the settings in U-Boot. If you disable the front ports in U-Boot, they will be disabled in OS 4 as well.

Damn, I should have written that into the documentation.

Just a quick post to note that the install went through flawlessly here. I'm posting this using IBrowse, and my SMBFS shares all work perfectly. I did also notice that the colours on my desktop background picture (which is pretty dark) did get a bit brighter and perhaps a bit more saturated. I didn't see any video driver changes in the LHA file, what gives? (I'm using a Radeon 8500 on a fixed A1 XE).

[edit]
After playing some more, everything really does seem to work pretty well. The only slight disappointment (caused by my reinstalling from scratch) was having to remember to manually add 'mixer SETLEVELS' to the user-startup and doing the usual os4depot download spree. These things really need to be installed by default, it would suck for a newbie to buy say a SAM440 and not have any audio output because he didn't do the Linux thing and whip out the text editor.

Something else I noticed is that mplayer (epiphany version) seems to misbehave after playing a minute or so of DivX. I don't have a supported Radeon so I need to play movies in SDL mode, and after a minute the screen just goes black. The audio still works and I can stop the movie normally.

@ Rogue

Do we now have the same functinality and bug fixes, the final OS4 CD would have had when you guys talked about putting the CD together for shipping ?

Thanks !!

Martin

From the PDF inside the archive:

Stacks are now protected with guard pages at the bottom of the stack,
preventing rogue programs to trash innocent memory as well as making it
easier to spot stack overruns.

Rogue programs!!

Of course, all a strictly limited number of guard pages buys you by way of protection is that now the rogue program has to severely overshoot its stack to do damage...

void recurse(int x)
{
int a[500000];

a[0]=1;
recurse(x+1);
}

is not very likely to be caught :)

So your programs just need to be "roguer"....

@umisef

That's actually one of the places where x86 got it right. If you put stacks on their own segments, it is literally impossible for a stack to stomp on innocent data, regardless of how much one overshoots by.
