hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : AmiZilla Booty Splits Four Ways
   posted by DiscreetFX on 28-Sep-2007 6:07:44 (13043 reads)
For Immediate Release

September 28th, 2007

We are trying something new to stimulate AmiZilla development. The Booty is now available as a split if a team can successfully port it on their favorite Amiga OS type system. It breaks down this way:

Amiga OS 4.0 = Successful stable port of Firefox equals 25% of the AmiZilla Booty.

MorphOS = Successful stable port of Firefox equals 25% of the AmiZilla Booty.

AROS = Successful stable port of Firefox equals 25% of the AmiZilla Booty.

Amiga OS 3.1= Successful stable port of Firefox equals 25% of the AmiZilla Booty.

While it will be less money to the winner, if they are able to port to their favorite system it will mean that the technical difficulty's that some have complained about porting to 3.X are now removed. Also we believe that once one port is complete the others will fall into place. Of course if the same team did all four ports then they would get 100%. We hope this can push AmiZilla forward and not hold it back any longer. Donations are optional but always welcome if you feel this will push the contest forward.

Best regards

@discreetFX

Sorry, for not translating this, but there was a time, as the team around opera was very interested for a port to AmigaOS. I asked about the planned port ages ago (see below) and they responded really quickly at that time ..

Oh, the reason for not doing the amiga port was, that the responsible amiga team leaved the company. The Opera company was looking for a new team, but seemed not to have found one :( too bad. Imagine a opera port around 1998 :)

greetings,
nexus

No one has been defrauded and at 4+ years with no way to pay the money out properly in sight otherwise this is a very fair way to address it. There is a good chance one party or one team will end up claiming 2 or 3 of the 4 portions anyway. This seems to be quite a good faith decision on the part of DiscreetFX. And worst case if you put money in and are that concerned just ask for your portion back.

So if there are 3 main contributers you will need them to agree to it, plus everyone else.
If they don't then the can get their money back or leave the bounty as it was, is and should be.

Before anyone does anything. Have these people been consulted.

Donors top list:

1. Former Netscape Executive
$4205.61

2. Bill Panagouleas
$2000

3. Computer Group Gothenburg
$500

Can you explain you issue with dividing it up, instead of just demanding things you dont have the right to demand?

Where do I buy something to do MorphOS development/testing on? There's not even a peg on Ebay right now... Nor do I see an AmigaOne. So, if someone has one but not the other, that's not possible, as is likely the case for pretty much anyone with the talent and time to do such a thing.

Isn't that exactly what Cygnix is?

CygWIN lets you run a full unix enviroment on MS-Windows. It make a very nice setup. I have a laptop with Windows, Cygwin (for 68K cross compiling) and UAE all together. CYGNIX is supposed to be a "tiny" version of Cygwin, but I don't know any more than that about it.

@Plaz

I think you're confused by the name. Cygnix is an X11 emulator for OS4. OK, it's not quite that, but that's the idea.

IMO a 4 way split is the most practical way to do it (any other way gets messy...), and the easiest to sell to the Amiga community!

If we have an OS4 version, some problems will be solved for the AmiZilla Team, and hopefully it will also give us a Template for what needs doing for an OS3 version!

@ voyager2007
Well, it's being done for the Firefox OS4 port- GLib, X11 and GTK, and they will also will need to be done for an OS3 port.

Quote:
Joshua: This was my initial thought as well. They /really/ hard part is getting Firefox to run on any one of these OSs. Once you get it on one, it's relatively simple to port it between the AmigaOS-ish variants. 95+% of the work is in getting to the first on

An OS4 port won't make it simple to do an OS3 port- they can use OS4 features like Linux lib (.so) support etc, we may still need to work out, plus there has been a lot of work done on the OS3 port already, so the Amizilla team really deserves some credit for all their OS3 work! And The OS4 port is most likely to be done first.

@ meet.mrnrg
Well, with the work on the OS4 version, It got me thinking about how we'd split up the Bounty (if it was completed), and the conclusion I came to was- just a simple 4 way split as Bill has suggested, as anything else could have turned into a hornets' nest. So what difference does it make if the decision to split it up is made before or after completion- IMO having it specified after, could lead to big trouble! I'd far prefer to have it worked out and set in stone now!
And to have new pools made- how many people would contribute to the OS3 version- bugger all I'd say- I'd give it up- how is that fair to all the people who have worked on the OS3 version! And that would also mean no AROS or MOS version either probably.

No-one- it is just a demo site, for a new design one of our members (Per Lindén) came up with- the AmiZilla site is at http://amizilla.sourceforge.net - I've used the new design to update some of the site, but it's not public yet.

@DiscreetFX

What about changing so that any first porter (for any of the required platforms) get
50-75% of the money. This would be more fair, as the porting between platforms is
far easier. Don't you think?

@Samwel

I agree. Thats why I would prefer all of the money to get the first port done. Once that happens the ball will be rolling and we can all chip and raise more money then, once we have a foundation base working model.

As I said earlier, first of all some of the ports are easier then others (I'm guessing the 3.1 port may never be completed) and secondly if you divide it up that way noone from the AROS port or the MorphOS port will want to provide anything to the OS 4 port, because it will cost them money. On the other hand, if its split in quarters, the guy doing the AROS version doesnt hurt his effort at all by sending pieces to the OS 4 people and vice versa as they each get sections done. Your way we get one version and hopefully we'll eventually get a couple of the others. Bill's way, we'll see 2 or 3 versions right after each other.

So you want to change the bounty much more then BillP, and cheat 3 of the teams out of money, whose being crooked now? The AROS port happens first (which is actually likely), you going to chip in 2.5K or so, so the OS 4 port guys actually get enough money to fold?

I agree also. Split the money into 4 different ports equally. This is the best way because the way it is now people need to provide all 4 ports which isn't going to happen until hell freezes over. I also agree on not giving the first port 50 % because that would lessen the change any of the other ports get done. If someone wants 50%; do 2 ports then.

@meet.mrng

STFU RTFM and

You have no idea what your talking about. Is it actually clear to you now, after three pages, that the bounty was for ALL 4 ports NOT just for OS 4?

Is anyone actually working on any of the ports? (the guy working on the os4-port had a broken computer, so he hasn't touched this in a long while, right?)

@DiscreetFX

If you have enough money to apparently make a serious bid for the Amiga brand, which you will never accomplish, why not make use of that money to:

Double the bounty or even HIRE people to do an AROS port of the browser
HIRE people to port Open Office to AROS
HIRE people to develop AROS into a marketable state
Design & Market an AROS reference platform based on generic PC components with a cool case.

If you honestly made a serious offer for the Amiga name (and I don't mean serious in Bill's terms) then you should have the capital to take on a project like this.

I did that page almost for more than two years ago. I didn't finish it due to lack of time and motivation.

If this new scheme with the bounty works out and someone starts porting I might finish what I started.

FACTS: Currently NO-ONE has ported / created a FireFox Mozilla Browers for Amiga OS
THATS FINAL

The reason is as simple as the Clint East Wood Movies - Dead Or Alive Bounty.
And seriously, tearing up the reward into four, well ClintEW might not even look at it,
cause the money amount would be so simple.

I've been programming since I was 14 and being paid for it since 18. Simple rules pay up or we get 2000 like market crashes where insane people thought FREE Internet Would Work.

Your not a profit maker, just find something else legal to comment on or do.
