hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : AmiZilla Booty Splits Four Ways
   posted by DiscreetFX on 28-Sep-2007 7:07:44 (12359 reads)
For Immediate Release

September 28th, 2007

We are trying something new to stimulate AmiZilla development. The Booty is now available as a split if a team can successfully port it on their favorite Amiga OS type system. It breaks down this way:

Amiga OS 4.0 = Successful stable port of Firefox equals 25% of the AmiZilla Booty.

MorphOS = Successful stable port of Firefox equals 25% of the AmiZilla Booty.

AROS = Successful stable port of Firefox equals 25% of the AmiZilla Booty.

Amiga OS 3.1= Successful stable port of Firefox equals 25% of the AmiZilla Booty.

While it will be less money to the winner, if they are able to port to their favorite system it will mean that the technical difficulty's that some have complained about porting to 3.X are now removed. Also we believe that once one port is complete the others will fall into place. Of course if the same team did all four ports then they would get 100%. We hope this can push AmiZilla forward and not hold it back any longer. Donations are optional but always welcome if you feel this will push the contest forward.

Best regards

@Insanity

Ownership of AROS is currently detained in court?

@meet.mrnrg:
Then you just have to do all 4 and get all the reward... as before.

uuuh, tired. misread.

and afaik, why not wait for aos4 to get out of court and if it is shelved then, lets all head for aros or morphos, good enough?

@pleng

1:, reread my posts.

2: how about 6 months? (or enough time to actually have a hint of what the outcome of the current case will be? ) pick your own deadline

@pleng

There is no point in hiring professionals for the porting work. They would cost at least ten times' the amount of the reward that now exists.

There is no way that any company or person could ever get that expense back, and who is going to donate some hundreds of thousands of dollars to get a free program for a few hundred fans?

It's not on developing an app for hundreds, it's about turning it into a compelling solution for thousands... You'll get expertize in the process that you can apply to other projects and recognition which you can gear indirectly to your own.

Its simple to see.

If the first person to port FireFox to any ONE (1 only) of the 1-4 Amiga OS's
gets the entire bounty of $10,000+ then we will have a solid race. This is more likely to occur first, cause it simply would be worth while.

What might be a better options it create a VM environment, actually we need an X86 or UNIX code library emulator bounty anyway.

Not to overstate the obvious... but if you had a sincere interest in finding out about a possible licensing opportunity why didn't you simply call them rather than rely on e-mail?

Indeed. Some companies you have to nag quite a bit to get anywhere. Our first NDA with ATI took 6 months before we had paperwork to sign. Our second one was nearly 2 years before we got things through with AMD/ATI, and now they're giving some of that away for free. (bangs head against wall) Email, call, postal-mail them. Seems there was some effort way back in the day for an Amiga port of Opera that never got anywhere, so seems they aren't (or weren't anyway) against such things. perhaps they just need convincing that they're talking to someone more serious and professional than whoever failed to deliver in the past. Perhaps their policies have changed since then and they aren't interested, but get them to say so before giving up.

4 x Brand new bounties or its a criminal offense. If anything the original terms were vague and ambiguous.

The rules you didn't understand were that a port to AmigaOS 4 or MorphOS *only* wouldn't get a single penny. What were you saying?

Also, criminal offence? I would very kindly ask you to tone this down quite a bit. No-one stops people from asking a refund if they do not like the change.

Making the bounty for the first port to any of these platforms larger than the rest is an idea worth considering. It would encourage people to to the hard work of the initial port to any Amiga OS system. I have no problem with splitting the bounty into four bits. It looks like this is the result of feedback from those attempting to port it.

Yes, that's my thought as well. 40% for the first running port and 20% for the remailing ones would be better IMHO.

I agree. Thats why I would prefer all of the money to get the first port done. Once that happens the ball will be rolling and we can all chip and raise more money then, once we have a foundation base working model.

If that's what you'd prefer, you never liked the bounty anyway.

I'm replying to this one as well, just to make sure you are going to actually read one. The bounty never was going to give all money to one of the AmigaOS's. It was all four to get $10,000+ or a big fat $0 for anything else. Now, it's 25% for each port. If you wanted $10,000+ for an AmigaOS 4 port, well, tough, wrong bounty, doing that would be "unethical" (to use your own terminology) as you would be "stealing" from all the people who donated to get a port to another OS.

UNIX code library emulator bounty anyway.

We have one to a certain extend and have had one for over 15 years now, Ixemul.

@ne_one

Berry (a DiscreetFX contractor) also called Opra Software a few times and left messages. Opra makes a nice browser and it would great to have a port. They are welcome to contact DiscreetFX if they want to discuss.

I'm one of the guys that never knew this until two days ago. And I only found that on their web site's guide page, the main front page left me believing first come first paid everything, as did the FAQ still two days ago. Perhaps others who were more serious about actually doing something with this looked further and knew better than I did, but I don't hink I'm dumb and am suprised I went so many years assuming incorrectly the whole pot went to the first port.

(lets hope I didn't do anything, like sell my apartment last night. kind of worn out)

Thanks for that deal btw, a steal for only 10 euro.

Do hope you're outa there next weekend though.. Hate to call the cops on you..

Personally, I think this bounty split in 4 is a good idea. How long has the bounty been up now anyway ?
