Hardware News   Hardware News : New Scan Doubler tests look good!
posted by IOWASURFER on 7-Dec-2007 16:19:32 (39531 reads)
A Scan doubler for the little man!

Please let it be known if you would like a scan doubler and if its worth making
a bunch of them for the community...

I have been working with a engineer who has been creating
a scan doubler which i just tested the prototype last night.

The 2.0 Screen...Mmmm Purple..

I asked him to please make a scan doubler for the
AMIGA community like he has done for the ATARI community...

The 1.3 screen classic Amiga all the way..

An Amiga 1200 and the scan doubler... Running Work bench 3.1

This Scan doubler has the potential of working with almost all of the classic
Amiga's 500/600/1000/1200/2000/3000/4000 etc and it's way affordable.
If things work out with this unit I am testing then the units will be
available for AMIGANS soon after all testing and a few very minor bugs are squashed.

The scan doubler on a Amiga 1000 for size comparison.

The Scan doubler inside guts...

Please support this new product by posting here if you could use one.
Initial costs are to be determined but I see them way under $100$ and
as you can see by the 3 AMIGA systems I already tested this new scan
doubler on look great with a VGA flat screen monitor initial reactions are
good this will be a awesome add on to any serious
Amiga collector/hobbyist who wants to run vga...

Amiga 500 Running Wings...

Amiga 500 Running Wings...Looks great on a Lcd flat screen

Amiga 500 Running Wings... Love this game..
And heck who doesn't want to run on a regular monitor?

Here is Desert Strike screen shots... running

I'd love to have one too. If the price is really good.

Why doesn't he make it open source for others to build or make it even better?

I am going to try to keep the price of the unit at or under $65 USD.
It depends on how good I am at the PCB layout software I use
to design the unit.

I have already adapted the unit to PAL frequencies on another
machine so yes it will do that.

I would be glad to share the final schematic with anyone who wants
to build their own.

Does it work with TFT monitors?

Also, with AGA.. will it have a limited palette in higher than 16bit screens, or will it look totally screwed up?

The output of the AL250 used in this unit is compatible with
all modern LCD monitors. It even has internal DAC and SRAM
to fix interlace flicker.

I don't know about how input greater than 16 bit will show up.
This unit is meant to be a low cost alternative to high end
converters. If you need something more then you should
look into those options.

All I can do is offer a refund of purchase price if
anyone is dissatisfied with my product

Perhaps it's because he wants to SELL the fruits of his labour and make some MONEY.

Not everyone want's to give away their projects for free and some of us have to work for a living.

How does it handle higher frequency Amiga screen modes, as in, does it pass them through ok?

My guess is that it will. If it does not the unit uses the
ICS1523 clock generator which is fully programmable.
The microcontroller in the my converter can be set to
monitor and if necessary reprogram the ICS chip to
deal with the situation.

All the components can be custom programmed to meet
any signal type I have come across or have heard about.
Go to www.averlogic.com and read about the AL250 as
an example and you will see what I mean.

All though I already own quite a good external scan doubler which I use with my A1200 tower, if you can keep the price under $100 I would be interested in purchasing one to use with my second A1200 which I plan to use with either my spare Blizzard 1240 (after I fix the power connector on the cooling fan) or my old Apollo 1230/50 mk-2.

Hi, looks like an awsome project.
Will it work with a CD32?
I've had some problems with some CD32 screen modes when using them on VGA monitors, they work on the "Insert a cd" screen but one you begin to load one it goes blank... so if this product works for CD32 (PAL) , I'm interested.

I will be needing a new scandoubler/FF in the future.

I had an Eyetech one; but it was installed in my A1200T, taken in my recent burglary.

I understand that make is no longer available new, and expensive second hand.

Jens of Individual Computers was working on one which increased both frequencies, (including the 50hz), for monitors which begin scanning at 59/60hz.
Is this SD likely to have such functionality?

This converter will do PAL frequencies. At least it has
worked in the few PAL machines I have used it on.

I am doing the schematic right now and will do the layout
soon. I will post my progress here as I go and answer
your questions to the best of my knowledge.....

Roy,

Congratulations on the good work.

I'd be interested in making one myself, as I have the Averlogic AL250 and AL875 already!
A few years ago I intended to make a scandoubler myself but never quite got round to it.

If you want any help/advice on PCB layout, I would be glad to help.

Is the current PCB single or dual sided?

Do you have or need the AL250/AL251 product knowledge and application notes?

I can also answer a few questions about the AL250 device, as the datasheets are no longer freely downloadable.

It supports RGB 565 (16 bit colour) and YUV colour modes.
Autodetects PAL/NTSC.
Maximum resolution, 768 active pixels per line and 1024 lines per frame. So should support the more common amiga video modes.

Look forward to future updates,

Ian

Id very likely need one if it is free of serious bugs and nice build quality !
I wont be an earlybird though

And it has to support PAL 100%.. As I am in Norway .. 220 volts PSU ??

I have successfully completed and tested the new
Amiga specific unit and it works well.

I have to decide on an enclosure but the unit is
on budget so far.

stay tuned for more updates...
