Software News   Software News : Epistula Instant Messenger Update
   posted by Slash on 12-Dec-2007 15:48:29 (6640 reads)
Epistula Instant Messenger - Release v52.16

Just a quick release to get the public version of Epistula to the same level as the recently released Classic AmigaOS 4 version included on the CD.

So with this, there's new documentation and quite a few bug fixes thanks to Timothy De Groote's hard work over the past month. Thanks a lot Tim.

There is one bug left that I just can't track down... a crash occuring within a strlen() call, which I WILL have fixed for the next release. As usual the latest version it can be downloaded here.

Installation
It is recommended that you backup your epistula.xml and msn.xml files and perform a full reinstall of the package using the included installer.

Special Thanks
Wow, I have software on a major Amiga OS release. Very grateful for such an opportunity! Thanks Hyperion

More updates soon...

Regards
Daniel Allsopp

It requires newer kernel than what we poor A1 users have.

Thanks a lot developing this kind of software. I don't use instant messengers myself (I deleted my hotmail account just recently) but I know many others do and I think they appreciate your work a lot (they should at least).

Same here. Asks for the 52.12 kernel, that I don't have. Is Hyperion making a new update?

Oh crap! Something had to go wrong didn't it

What's the latest public kernel for A1 and I'll change the requirements as I don't think I'm using anything in the new kernel anyway, which is why I should have left that requirement alone!

It should be asking for 52.15, which is the one released with the Classic OS4 release.

I'm a betatester, which is why I have 52.15 so I have no idea if Hyperion is releasing the kernel for A1 owners too. Like I say, if someone can tell me the latest A1 kernel version, I'll update the archive tonight.

Sorry, you are right... It asks for 52.15 but I have the 52.8...

I look forward for the new version

OK, a new version is now up which should only expect to find kernel version 52.8, which is the OS4 final version.

now it asks for compactwindow.mcc v15.0 but the url you are giving doesn't work, and I mean the "http://www.the-snakepit.co.uk/projects/bstring-mcc/". It returns "ERROR 404"

God damn it

You see, that's what happens when you start a new feature and release it half way through development whilst being half asleep.

CompactWindow 15.0 is an OS4 recompile of the original CompactWindow and will be released with the next version of Epistula.

In the meantime, download the archive again, which has the CompactWindow code removed so it will start up this time, I hope.

Thanks for the reports.

I did give a bit of a warning above:

@Slash
Unfortunatley, on my system, as soon as I connect to MSN it freezes my computer or makes the CPU to work at 100%. I tried that on a fresh new installation, with just the basic-necessary software installed

@walkero

Is this the same problem that you've always had since I can remember?

Hmm... Starting program it says that plugin 'Unknown' is not recognized. Clicking on 'OK' starts up the program. I cannot find a plugin named 'Unknown'. What is this about?

@Moxee

You must have an old version of a plugin installed. The words 'Unknown' appear if it can't find the name of the plugin in its code, which means it's located in a different place that the newer plugin system is looking at.

So far everything works good but i know of previouse versions when i thought everything was ok it started freezing on sometimes connecting to msn or when quitting after starting msn.

So i will run this new version and hope for the best :) Hope for no freezes ;)

EDIT: Forgot to say... Welcome back Slash :D

EDIT2: I heard Voodoo had problems with Epistula. He run it, connect to MSN and on exit he got a crash. Thats on ua1 and 512mb ram. I dont know his system but i think this is the same problems as some other have and i had before... Still more to test until i can say more ;)

Sorry for spoiling the fun, but it freezes all over the place, usually when msn is logged in.
Got some GR (wui-related stuff). Otherwise the freezes manifest themselves by non-responding pointer or frozen epistula window and later the pointer freezes.
Cpu docky seems to continue running.
Quitting (when I managed to get as far) freezes when window too.
I'm actually trying to use it for the first time.
Kickstart 52.8 here...
I suspect some mui-related problem here.

here're 68k mui classes (mcc files removed from listing for compactnes' sake) :
