OWB - Origyn Web Browser for AmigaOS4
The first (in)complete Modern Web Browser for AmigaOS4

I'm happy to announce that today we have a web browser for AmigaOS4 that supports almost all modern web technologies.

Since it is a project in an early state I'll write first what doesn't work.. Don't expect at moment Tool bars and all other things present in all browser. But i assure you that we are working on this. But i would release something for Christmas also to see your feedback about this browser.

OK. Let's go...

WHAT DOESN'T WORK:
# FILE TRANSFER
# Cookies: sometimes and on some sites login is impossible.
# Crashes: There are some sites that crashes and you could have some crashes on
exit. Don't send me crash logs.. the functions that crashes are known..
# Chars: Some chars like () in the Italian char actually are not printable.. :(
I can write to you a special version but is better to wait new releases
# Sites Display: 99% of sites works correctly.. but you could find some sites
that doesn't render well. On some sites you could have problem on window's
redraw
# Chinese fonts are not rendered (i think.. or i haven't found a right ttf
font..)
# Don't expect Flash/Movie plugins (at moment..)
# Sometimes the browser could send a bad request to the web server. Go back and
re click on the link
# Copy/Paste of text doesn't work at moment
#There isn't a scroll bar at momen
# maybe other

WHAT WORKS:
# IT IS FREE.. ;)
# NO BOUNTY OR OTHER.. ;)
# Javascript should work on 99% of the web sites
# CSS and all web technologies work perfectly
# True Type fonts are used to display fonts (see notes on how it works)
# SSL works (see notes)
# It is quite fast also on A1200 (well.. doesn't expect the same speed as on an A1..)
# Is updated daily by the OWB developers (and me..)

INSTALLATION AND USAGE:
Copy the fc-cache file included in C/ dir into your C: directory (even if is not is needed) and run it.
Copy the files included in the FONTS/ directory into your FONTS: directory
Copy the files included in the S/ directory into your S: directory
Mount the RANDOM: device from SYS:Storage/DosDrivers/ (or copy it into DEVS:DosDrivers/)

To launch OWB just click on its icon or run from the shell with this syntax:

owb URL

The first time you run it, it will search the FONTS:_TrueType/ directory to see what ttf fonts are available and create some cache files, so you may have to wait for some seconds, depending on how many files you have there. If you run fc-cache first, the owb launch will be fast

To navigate back and forth, use:
ALT -> to go forward
ALT <- to go back

Thanks to everyone working on or testing it!
Thanks to Mason and Kens for their icons!
It's Christmas.. remember me! :)

Thank you and Merry Christmas!
Andrea Palmatč

File is availabbel on OS4Depot..

I just opened an Internet Explorer from WindowsXP and compared it with the OWB for YouTube . And i can say that OWB is more easy to read and relasing for eyes. Especially the anti-alias fonts and layout is far better.

I wish this project will be completed asap. I am going to donate for him! Because in my opinion a modern browser is the MOST IMPORTANT and URGENT application for AOS. It is definetely weakets point of our platform.

We have office similar programs, photoshop like programs but no real browser. I mean with AOS you can do anything you need if you do not need to play modern games without Viruses or Crashes.

For games i am not optimistic for future as good as PS or PC and we have to play games via Emulators like Mac platform.

Wow Im gobbed smacked. Finaly, a web browser that we can actually call a WEBBROWSER.

I think now this will be a wake up call for those other browser`s if they want to get any where on this platform. Very nice work! Congratulations.

@Ikir

Also made a small donation as I think it really looks like a promising project!
Everybody, donations can be made via the PayPal link on Amigasoft.net.

@Jahc
Thanks for the tip, would never have thought of that myself :)

Thanks alot for that great work!

Unfortunately I'm getting GRs when launching fc-cache or OWB itself on A4000!

Does anybody have any idea on this?

Best Regards

I donated to Sputnik and I don't want to cancel its bounty, the more browsers the better. Of course, I'll donate to Andrea too, he's doing a GREAT job! Thanks, Andrea, this has been really a wonderful Christmas gift!!

They both deserve money, so lets keep the bounty in place, and send afxgroup copious amounts of money too. The sputnik os4 port wont happen without the bounty anyway, and it's potentially a more interesting project, with the browser already using MUI.

Well that's me out of a job then

Well done!

It can almost but not quite handle my myspace page (even the translucent panels) , but runs out of memory and crashes. Still impressed though.

Wonder what the AWeb & IBrowse teams will make of this? I hope they can take this and integrate it somehow into their products???????

Well, I personally, would like to get my hands on the source code, to see about porting it to OS3!
It would probably be easier than Mozilla, especially as the OS4 API, is mostly the same as OS3, plus we have programmers familiar with Amiga APIs.
As for the Bounty, as Origyn has most (if not all) modern browser features, I'd be all for allowing the Mozilla OS4 bounty to go to it (and of course for it to go to OS3 and AROS, MOS Bounties too).

Insanity:

Dunno how much a 4.0 effort will differ from a 3.1 effort considering things such as libraries and memory protection?

Memory protection shouldn't be an issue- it's a problem the other way around, 3.x progs with MP on OS4. Threads might take some work though.

So a browser using SDL to render its whole "interface"

So, is it using SDL for it's Interface? I hope so, that would make things easy for other ports!

Now, for a tool bar + tabs

Patience, patience... all good things come to those who wait

Can't help you with the tabs I'm afraid, but...

I was finding it rather annoying having to quit and re-launch OWB each time I wanted to go to another site, so I made a page on my server which essentially adds a URL toolbar to OWB

And since I also wanted to get the toolbar even if I launched OWB from it's icon, I modified OWB to load my page by default instead of Google.

So, while we wait for the next version of OWB I've uploaded a little patch to OS4Depot so that others may enjoy that feature if they find it useful.

If you read the message well you'll see that the real problem is Marcin not being holly enough for deserving money from the OS4 crowd. Remember, he code for MorphOS which is zee competition...

Hi,

@pixie:

he,he .. nice sayd

But this is not the problem.
IF he finish the OS4 Sputnik browser then i am willing to Donate too -NO question!-
It is not WHO code the browser [an OS4 coder or an MOS coder] ...
It is the "way" to doing this ..

Sputnik-> BIG hype on MOS site [naturaly not with bad waves to the OS4 site] and
dont a "nice" feeling from the coder for OS4 .. then with big nagging on him, he is
in agreement to make an OS4 port, will come enough money on a bounty, a BIG task
of money !
And now ..... silence ..............................
My critism is on a couple of points:
To much money [i think the sum is so big, he have thinked it will never reach it ..]
It musst be first the MOS port done .. it is alwas WAY distant from this.

So my basic point is-> we will never see an OS4 port of this [rarely an MOS port] and
the money will sitting on the bounty for a long time [like the AmiZilla bounty] and
doing nothing.

In the end sputnik[MOS] will need MOS2.0 [or at this time maybe 2.5 *GG* ] and will
end the same way as BurnIT3.0,MotionStudio and the "Robin" game ..

OWB Browser-> NO Hype,no big Bounty--IT IS Materialized an Finish the Story !
THIs i have thinked by the "Amiga Way" ....
Yes, a native GUI like MUI was nice ... but better have YET an [limmit]usable browser!
He renders better than the sputnik version and is Free !

So my intention was not to let the [from my point] money sitting forever on a bounty
that is [from my point] not ever finnished.Give the money an coder THAT is doing
an BIG task for OS4 ! [and the "sputnik for OS4" bounty IS for an browser FOR OS4
and NOT for anything else !! (browser for all systems or something stupid) ]

If the user that spend here money on the bounty not agree here, this is your right-no problem.
But i think i can write MY point of view here-THIS is my right[if it not collide with the TOS ]

You know... you trash the Amiga way and praise what's not. If sputnik isn't better at render is due to the Amiga Way of doing things (native Gui, font renderer...), SDL ain't part of it.
