hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : Happy New Year from Hyperion Entertainment!
posted by Zardoz on 31-Dec-2007 15:28:07 (10278 reads)
Antwerp, Belgium. - 31 December, 2007

Hyperion Entertainment extends its best wishes for 2008 to all of its customers and supporters world-wide.

In 2007, Hyperion and the AmigaOS 4.x development team continued its tireless work on Hyperion’s renowned PowerPC based, multi-media centric operating system, AmigaOS 4, with the release of two significant (free for download) updates and the release of AmigaOS 4.0 for the original Amiga 1200/3000/4000 line of computers equipped with PowerPC accelerator cards. AmigaOS 4.0 is now (and has been since quite some time) by far the largest update of AmigaOS in Amiga history dating back to 1987.

Thanks to our strategic partnership with Acube Systems s.r.l which acts as Hyperion’s global producer and distributor, the production value of the Amiga 1200/3000/4000 version of AmigaOS 4.0, with heavy cardboard box, dedicated emergency floppy and glossy Quick Start manual, brought professional production values back to the Amiga platform which have not been seen since the demise of Commodore.

Building on that work, Hyperion is committed to continue development of AmigaOS 4.x in the year 2008 by drastically expanding both the feature-set of AmigaOS 4.x and the range of supported PowerPC based target hardware.

A number of exciting new features are currently already undergoing beta-testing with more functionality under development and scheduled for release in 2008.

Amiga 1200/3000/4000 users of AmigaOS 4.0 can look forward to a free update early 2008 bringing increased compatibility for legacy third-party hardware add-ons and improved driver support.

Users of AmigaOne hardware will also be in for a major treat in early H1/2008 and they certainly will not be the only ones.

Hyperion Entertainment once more wishes to thank all of its supporters and customers for their loyal and patient support without whom there would be no future for AmigaOS.

Please rest assured that in 2008, just as in 2007, Hyperion will continue to deliver.

Happy New Year!

What does the "H" stand for? Does this mean "First Half of 2008"?

Yes

And up to what point in the year is covered by "early H1/2008"? More or less than Q1/2008?

It´s pretty lame to suggest Q1 is a more valid standard. We are all from different places man.

[I´ve been drinking and (might) have read to much into that]

@DJBase

> Seems you never used OS3.9

Unfortunately I did, and 3.5. They were basically crap. Hardly any different from 3.1 and so unprofessional you had to reboot your A1200 several times just to start the thing up. If it were professional then 3.5 and 3.9 would have come with new ROMs and not software hacked into reboots just to get it running.

Bill.

Who was very UN-impressed with both 3.5 and 3.9 and the reboot situation

OS4 on A1 Rocks

PS. I almost forgot the 'professional' way the OS3.5 installation wiped out the Blizzard 68040 library without telling anyone, meaning until the old library was copied back OS3.5 would not boot ! Professional - PAH!

They did not have permission to make new ROMs.

Happy New Year to you too Hyperion, and thanks for all the work you've put into supporting the community over the last few years. OS4 is a joy to use, and is a reminder to anyone who uses other operating systems exactly how clunky they really are.

You sure? 3.5 was commissioned by the old Amiga Tech - they must have been able to get permission from themselves.

Anyway even if they did I find it unlikely that they would have done due to cost.

Doing new ROMs would have meant splitting 1 product into 4 (A500/2000, A1200, A3000, A4000) maybe even 5 (for the A4000T). I doubt that would have been a sensible idea.

Not necessarily. They could have done one, comprehensive package of the 3.x OS software, with all the different sets of "hooks" to the different, new ROM versions, included on the CD, and then provided the different ROMs in separate cover (that is, in it's own, independant box) to be drop-shipped to the end-user along side of the OS package.

In other words, they could have had 4 or 5 different 3.5 or 3.9 ROMs, but only needed one OS 3.5 or OS 3.9 CD/installer/manuals package. You simply make sure you've ordered the correct ROM (i.e. you specify you have an Amiga1200) when you order the package, and they send you the CD/manuals bundle, and the appropriate ROM package.

There was never, ever a need to have the ROMs packaged in the same box as the OS.

So to avoid shipping 4(5) products they should have shipped 5(6) ?? Brilliant !!!

This would have meant that they chips have been produced (in what numbers for which version ?), and dealers would have stocked them.

Bad idea, for a market that was impossible to gauge in advance.
