Software News   Software News : Origyn 1.9 now available
   posted by Petah on 12-Feb-2008 22:22:52 (6313 reads)
Another Origyn update was released on Tuesday February 12th, bringing up the version number from 1.8 to 1.9. Changes include a new progress bar, Workbench tooltype support, a home gadget and a few bug fixes. As always, the complete program can be found on strohmayer.org as a 2.3 MB 7 Zip-archive along with a complete changelog.

About Origyn
Origyn is a free web browser originally designed for cell phones, set top boxes and other consumer electronic gadgets. It rests on a SDL -implemented version of Apple's WebKit rendering engine. The AmigaOS version is available exclusively for OS 4.0 and is to this date the only Amiga HTML browser with official support for Cascading Style Sheets. Since the its introduction in December 2007, Origyn has for AmigaOS has enjoyed several updates stirring up quite some interest among Amiga users in the process.

This is a lot more usable than the last one I tried. However, I did get graphics corruption when I started typing into a text editor box. It also happened when I tabbed my way through the buttons. The cycle gadget between for selecting preview/post-comment didn't work with the mouse. Finally, the "go!" button for posting this comment didn't work, so I lost the post (copy and paste from OWB doesn't work yet) and had to retype it in IBrowse.

Just a few notes:
- Please add that libSDL-1.2.so and libicu.so are required in the readme, plus links to the files
- Either OWB or the ELF loader needs better error messages. "Could not open object" doesn't tell me much. If it had said "Could not open libSDL-1.2.so" then I would have known what to do

I know that there's a huge amount of work involved in porting, but I thought that I'd note these down before I forget.

Thanks for the hard work.

Hans

I can search on trademe.co.nz for "amiga" without OWB throwing up any reapers now!

The new progress bar is very handy, too. Before then I'd stare at my CPU usage docky to determine if it was loading anything. And its good that the URL toolbar is updated when you click a link. Thanks! This is quite rapidly becoming a cool program.

Next to do: bookmarks and a scrollbar?? :) This is the most donation worthy project in a long time. I wish I could afford to send you a few euro.

Nice work! As I mentioned in one of the threads, the speed that updates are being released is amazing. Well done to all concerned!

I have to mirror Hans' comments on setup though, as installing the 1.9 version without having installed any of the earlier versions was a bit of a trial!

Excellent. I was even able to get onto the AmericanExpress site to view my credit card. I have to usually use my Mac for that as IB crashes with that site.

The fonts are horrible though, but as most browsers let you choose your own I guess this will only be temporary.

A nice MUI interface would help as well as being able to use OWB on its own screen.

Maybe OWB can be incorporated into IB which already has a good GUI but not the layout engine ?

You can put it on its own screen...

I wish that some people could stop saying the same pointless coments all the time like "what if IBrowse could become OWB". Leave the IBrowse developers alone or do the f****** GUI yourself.

So far so good!

Any chance of:
- using cycle gadgets to make drop-down lists work?
- allowing other windows to open? (useful when an operation requires it)

@BillE

No I hate MUI, it renders slow, and so freaking buggy.
I am getting DSI errors in IB after updating some mui classes, now I need to find out what changed after Amiga Updated installed the buggy ones.

Maybe IBrowse is buggy. Most important mui libs are updated and most good programs does use mui. At least here. Mui works on most amiga systems.

Well, I have some strange connection problems with OWB... on most sites I use OWB stops loading at a certain point and waits a looong time until it decides to display the site respectively parts of it. Most of the time pictures included from other sites are missing, sometimes it hangs for .js files (e.g. when accessing gmx.de). I have this accessing aw.net, too. Using IBrowse, loading of all sites is lightning fast (although the layout is broken sometimes). I don't use any proxy for both.

Anybody else have this problem?

@hotrod

Don't you think that the OWB devs & IBrowse devs combining forces would be a logical thing to do? I mean IBrowse is a great browser and already has all the GUI elements required, if these two dev teams could get it together they could produce a killer browser for us Amiga users, rather than developing against each other.

@NutsAboutAmiga

As Kicko said, I also don't find much problem with MUI. OK, granted, there is the odd glitch with IBrowse but nothing serious.

And with regards to MUI, what has happened to MUI4 for OS4?

@Kicko

Precisely, I'd hazard a guess that the people who don't like MUI are the ones who've never written any sort of complicated user interface with either ReAction or MUI... if they had they'd know immediately that MUI is light years ahead of anything ReAction will ever be.

@NutsAboutAmiga

What exactly is slow about MUI on OS4? It's as fast, or even more so, than ReAction, it looks better and is easier to work with. The only thing that makes ReAction any sort of 'OS4 standard' interface is that all the prefs editors are written with it.

Anyway, this has been discussed to death already so I've only got one more thing to say; 'Boooooooo, ReAction sucks!'

Thanks for the active development ! OWB becomes faster and that's so nice to see such a rendering on Amiga ! I even succeed to read my email via orange.fr that is known to be heavy and having sometimes a stange behaviour.

As a programmer, I use MUI because it compiles on all systems and gives a higher level that makes things easier. Maybe MUI was slow on a 68030 but its speed is an invalid argument now.

About IBrowse, their developers have their own way. Let us lead their project. They will understand themselves what they want to do.

That's so great to see many software updates these days !!
