Software News   Software News : AROS for the SAM440 released, now available for testing
posted by Petah on 22-May-2008 18:37:11 (6554 reads)
As expected, Dr Michal Schulz has released a first release candidate of the AROS Research Operating System for the SAM440 PowerPC 440EP-architecture. The binaries can be downloaded for free straight from Clausthal University of Technology as a 7,14 MB 7-Zip archive.

Technically inclined users may want to read a blog entry briefly discussing a few caveats including problems with the AROS Magic User Interface graphical interface.

AROS Research Operating System (AROS) is a free software/open source implementation of the AmigaOS 3.1 APIs. Designed to be portable and flexible, ports are currently available for x86 and PowerPC based PCs in native and hosted flavors, with other architectures in development.

Ah, you're talking about self-modifying code aren't you. Darn, I forgot about that old dinosaur.

He isn't. Self modifying code is probably very rare and is likely going to be the least of your problems.

The real problem is that amiga m68k programs usually mix program code and data (global variables and structures, etc.) in the same sections (this makes it possible to use PC-relative addressing to access the data faster) so that there is no way that you can tell them apart. This is already a problem when disassembling amiga m68k binaries (reading instructions where there are none).

That was ALL you needed to get AROS running? I'd already flashed my Sam to the latest UBoot, but it hangs after loading all the modules and never gets to the GUI. I wonder what's different between our systems?
