@Snuffy

Love the gold theme. . . not sure about the green background you have in that link, though.

I imagine I'll keep using the theme, but with the picture of the gold and white Studebaker in my avatar as the background. I think I've had that color scheme going now ever since you put it out. I still haven't gotten tired of it.

So do you want to volunteer to fix up the look?

I do.

I don't care who did it. Fact is that's what is advertised. OsNews, and any other sites will link to this announcement and these screenshots... So if it has really been taken from a coder's desktop, I guess something is wrong ;)

People will assume this is how OS4 looks like...

So maybe OS4 devs don't care, then it's ok... But if this was my product, I would care...

@Leo

Well, then you know who to contact. Given that it's scheduled for release in mid-Q3 of this year, you had better get moving.

@Leo

The theme is totally ok. When you talk about it its like its hell on earth. Just wait until the final os4 comes. You dont stand for every people. Some likes it while others doesnt. Will always be like that. I always change my settings to suit my needs. If the theme will be final i will ofcourse make the borders smaller and it will suit my taste perfectly.

If they make a theme that suites you then someone else will be makeing blablabla gui blablabla blabla ugly blablablablaaaa.

Just see windows. Vista is looking good with transparency, all the icons etc. Just look at windowsXP and all older windowses. XP has come with 3 service packs and most of the icons and backgrounds looks just plain ugly. If you then look on my friends windowsXP its totally different. He changed all icons and downloaded 3rd party enhancers. Does windowsxp users complain. They just install it and download 3rd party programs that looks awesome.

2 of my friends always says os4 is so ugly. But they compare msn with wookie and sabre. I ask them what about your windows icons and rest. Is it better looking then my os4. they shutup. then i show episula and say.... please look and say msn is so much better looking. they shutup. Always i have to explain to them like they forget everytime they come on visit.

They always lose on the end as they see that i dont get angry like i did for some years ago. If they dont like it #### them. Always why dont you buy a pc. I tell them why should i :) because blablabla... i tell them if you need it run it, i know what im running and i dont need windows for that.

Sure i miss alot of good 3rd party programs from the windows world but i can live without them. And if i need them ill buy a laptop but amiga will still be my main platform.

@kicko Please shutup... are you writing a book here ?

I was hoping all these posts were about something else than icons or window style.

Rogue and all the developers : Thank you for the work done and for the announcement that show us again that things are going better. Not about the graphical aspect but more important, step by step, you modernize the OS in many ways.

Count on me to develop apps on OS4 ! And use it daily of course !

Well, I started this "GUI doesn't look IMBA" by just saying it without real arguments, I mean without saying what is really bad on the screenshots (besides stupid discussion with rogue about "if you don't like default look, make/get/use your skin... which is not the cure anyway). I expected question what you think is wrong with gui, but it never happend.

Anyway Leo wrote it really nice. Thanks.
I would add maybe the black "shadow" under brown icons text in prefs window is not right combination either. Same readability problems cause the black serif font with white outline used by devices icons.

Most of the arguments Leo wrote are not about (dis)liking it or not, it is about usability.

Argument about screenshots taken from coder's desktop are false. This announcement was official and as that gets (or can get) into OSNews and other big sites read also by people outside our little Amiga world and they will not be such unquestioningly happy like most of the comments are here. And as official announcement it should look as good as possible.

Quote:
It's a default WB ! If you want better reset the GUI:

The system will be presented to broad audience with default GUI most of the time and even so it can be completely altered by user, there are people who buy the OS to work with it not play with OS design. But it doesn't mean they would not like to use nice looking desktop too.

I am in no way a usability or gui expert, but still I think looks is very important. I'm with Leo on his comments, for comparison it would be nice to see his version of the example pic.

It's very important to release smart pictures of the OS out into the wild (not saying that current ones are lousy), as pics are the only concrete way for potential new users to really "feel" the OS before purchasing. In the end the pictures of the GUI are advertisements, and people really care about looks in (consumer) products. How succesful would OSX be if it did not look as good as it does?

We agree that inside, OS4 is going in right direction, but let's not underestimate the power of good looking, clean, modern GUI. Afterall, that's what is visible to the user. Usability problems are not that easy to spot, but old-fashioned or inconsistent looks are. In best case the GUI design supports good usability and the GUI can be both good looking and a pleasure to use.

As we know, good looks helps to create personal career, so why not give OS4 the best push possible in this aspect as well! :)

leo said that, not Snuffy.

@all

Did any of you UI whiners even bother to read the announcment? I would think the prospect of running FireFox3, OpenOffice, Blender, & other open source apps on os4 would be more important then ripping apart the sample pictures. I know reading the feature list is harder to do then looking at pictures, but please try.

Well... I for one, think it looks smashing. Well done, Hyperion, keep up the great work!

And this may be very ignorant on my part... but cannot one ''change'' what their environment looks like to a certain extent? Customise and personalise it to their own needs, wants and desires?

If so... why are you guys dissing what has been an enormous undertaking?

Yes, the combination of changes that can be made to the looks of WB are almost endless.

Here's a nice theme done by saimo, looks nothing like the default os4.0 WB. WB theme

As good as that theme looks, ppl would still find fault with parts of it & thats ok, but judging a OS based on a configurable UI is not very intelligent.

@Metalheart

LOL, thanks for proving my point!

Its just impossible to create a WB that everyone would like & never change. Better to spend the time coding features then UI's.

Well, according to some posters that's actually a problem and not a desirable feature. I guess these are the kind of people who rely on local livestock to wake them up in the morning, because customising the alarm clock for their local timezone is hard to do.

It becomes a "problem" when the availability of tools becomes an excuse for not providing a superior product in the first place.

It's a bit like selling a CD of a violin concierto performed Yehudi Menuhin on a $200 Yamaha learner's violin, with the excuse of including a couple of hours use of a Stradivarius with each CD so that anyone who doesn't like the sound of the Yamaha may record their own version to their own taste....[1]

Of course, even if you recorded Menuhin using his personal favourite violin, with the London Symphony conducted by Karajan, the result won't please everyone. Some people may prefer Nigel Kennedy's interpretation. Some people may just think that Bernstein's style is superior to Karajan's. Or that Karajan is all well and good, but only when paired with the Berlin Philharmonics.

However, some aspects of the screenshots as posted are not like Bernstein vs Karajan; They are like Yamaha vs Stradivarius --- for example the labels in the dock at the bottom of the screen; They are essentially unreadable, and whoever set that up was either the equivalent of a mediocre 2nd year violin student, rather than a Menuhin, or was so unconcerned with the quality of the end product that the work was the equivalent of Menuhin using a badly tuned Yamaha with an overtightened synthetic bow. Yes, it still looks (sounds) better than anything I could produce, but that's no excuse for doing a shoddy job.

[1]: While I'd jump at the offer, just to once in my life touch a Stradivarius, I doubt there are more than 1000 people alive who have the skill to best Menuhin even with a vastly superior instrument.
