This price is simply too high when you consider the uses for OS4.1. It has no office suite and no modern web browser. That pretty much makes it useless for doing any real work. So it's a privilege to run an OS? I thought it was merely a choice. And as I said in my earlier post, I can get a complete x86 system including an LCD monitor for $479 US (263 GBP) from Dell that will run rings around the SAM440ep. So your math as well as any research you conducted are simply wrong. And the price of a complete system includes more than just a "motherboard and memory" that you mention. The SAM440ep is also terribly outdated when compared to other hardware platforms out there. It hasn't even broken the 1Ghz barrier yet. The average consumer and most people who buy computers don't give a rat's ass about the economies of scale. They DO care about the bottom line and the the price for a SAM440ep motherboard is more than most would pay for an entire system.

$679 US is just too high for an outdated motherboard regardless of the OS you intend to install on it. But hey, if you have the money and you like to waste it on antique hardware and an OS crippled by a lack of modern applications, then knock yourself out!

Way do compare it to PC? you can't run AmigaOS4.1 on a PC!

If you are interested in AmigaOS4.1 you buy it, if not you go to some Linux or Windows forum and be happy.

OWB does do CSS where well, and I don't consider it alfa/bata any more.

No, they compare and contrast competing products to get the best buy for their money at the time. In 1986 a lowly IBM PC cost a fortune too, but you'd have to pay someone just to dispose of it in 2008!

So no, the SAM440ep isn't a bargain at any time or place.

This is some really good news - especially for those who do not currently own OS4.x or a machine capable of running a version of OS4.x.

However, I do not really understand a lot of the negativity surrounding this. Why is it everyone is obsessed with higher specifications or lower pricing (considering it isn't actually THAT expensive to begin with).

What you have to bear in mind is that the Amiga is not as wide spread as a PC or Mac in today's climate. The hardware manufactured for it is not made in millions of units, and so cannot be sold for below manufacturing costs unlike other subsidised hardware - neither do these companies that do manufacture our hardware make any money on "software royalites" that consoles for example would reap back.

On top of this, by having a somewhat fixed hardware base to work with, you have something in the same vein as the original Amiga systems. This means the graphics architecture of the machine can have better supported drivers, allowing you to have more fun with your machine - rather than having to rely on some big company providing either drivers or technical documentation for their hardware so that drivers can be created.

Sure the SAM may only have a 64MB on board graphics chip, but as stated it is already better than the Radeon 7000 series mobility chips used in the MicroA1, so what is the problem?

Be glad that this hardware solution exists, and currently has none of the initial issues that plagued the original AmigaOne and Pegasos boards - and doesn't cost £700 for the motherboard alone!

I compare the SAM440ep to PCs because they are the only systems left to compare them to. Even Apple has left PPC hardware and moved on.

OWB does CSS.....so what?! It doesn't support Java and won't in the foreseeable future so it's pretty useless for any web browsing. And let's not forget that there's no office software out there for OS4.1 so OS4.1 will remain a hobby OS to be laughed at until some real applications are developed for it.

What hardware do recommend that runs AmigaOS4.0/4.1 that cost less?

upgrading a classic Amiga1200/4000 is where expensive, 2en hand AmigaOne are bit risky and can easily cost about the same.

PC and Mac Hardware don't run AmigaOS4.x.

I recommend that people buy a system that they can actually use for real work. If you're looking for a hobby or a toy and have lots of disposable income, then by all means, buy a SAM440ep and OS4.1, but you'll get bored with your hobby rather quickly since there are no real applications out there. For those who don't have a lot of cash, I say they would be better off buying an x86 system and running Linux or Vista.

I recommend the Red One....

I can't see how that point isn't something that the general user on this board already knows about, and has taken a stance on. What's in the price?

I'll show you a different story. A few years back both my son and I bought ourselves a new computer. His was an AMD-based thing with an, for those days, expensive gfx-card, a DVD-thingy, HD, mouse, and a tft monitor. It cost him a hell of a lot of money. I bought a µA1 including a nice enclosure (Morex Venus 668), a HD and a CD-thingy for a little less money.
In october last year my son 'renewed' his system: new mobo for dual core AMD-64, memory modules to go with it, SATA HD AND a new gfx-card to cope with the new requirements of some game, Call of Dudy or something. It again cost him a hell of a lot of money. This year, due to again new and increased requirements for said game, het wanted to buy a second gfx-card to put them in some dual mode action. He was advised against it, as for 'a few dollars more' he could get an entirely new gfx-card that would wipe the floor with his envisioned dual mode setup. Again some money was involved.

In about 4 years time he spent more then twice the money I did. Besides he's now the proud owner of a box full of left-overs, that nobody wants to pay a dime for.
In that time the value of my µA1 has not diminished much. Besides I have no left-overs laying around. And until today, now that OS_4.1 is announced for SAM440, I could get a very, very attractive price for my µ, but Im not willing to sell.

In short: x86, allthough cheap due to economies of scale, is a continuous flow of money down the drain, whilst an Amiga has shown to be an investment that retains its value over time. Now, which is cheaper in the long run? Pray, tell!

I think it pretty useable, even if does not have JavaVM and flash plugins.

Don't you like AbiWord? and AmiWriter is not to bad.
and TruboCalc is where useful i think, even if AmiWriter and TurboCalc are old they do produce documents.
