This is tremendously good news. OS4 was tied to the boat anchor that is the lack of new AmigaOnes, and this, if true, will mean that's finally over.

Call me cynical, but I'm going to wait until it's officially out before I start celebrating. Like some have said, the silence from Amiga Inc is deafening and without their blessing this is not going to happen. I'm not exactly getting a "warm fuzzy" from the timing of the announcement either - why not wait until after the settlement conference before announcing stuff? It could mean that the two companies have already come to an agreement and the actual conference is just going to be a big rubber stamp, but it could also mean someone jumped the gun and this will just anger Amiga Inc and derail the conference.

My Amiga One has had a lot of problems this last week so that outs you in a bad mood. So I have been testy but not when I replied to your trollings.

To see good news and then some negative idiot spouting on and on does not make things better.

Talk about a pot calling a kettle black. I do wonder why you post here.

Anyway I do not know why I even bothered to answer.

Probably because after getting my A1 running again I have had a few whiskies but I am in a good mood not a bad one - except when I see posts like yours

@BillE

You just keep digging your hole deeper. First you go around telling people to shut up. Now you're resorting to name calling. Are you sure you don't go to school with my 4 year old?

So name calling and telling people to shut up isn't considered being testy? Seems you have a problem with reality or maybe just a problem with telling the truth too.

You have an A1 so you're not even in the market for a SAM board. We should be asking YOU why you're here.

Well the £367 that we all calculated earlier is actually £440 from a UK supplier, plus £100 for the OS, so £540 before its even in a case with something to power it up - which will probably get you to £600. Lets compare apples to Apples - a Mac Mini is £399 including the OS, HD and gfx card. I would call £400 "affordable" and £600 "not affordable" - you see I have "different taste/different needs/preferences" just like you! I can also accept I may need a different OS and applications for different jobs or different hobbies (making music, editing videos, playing games etc).

I wish everyone well with SAM and OS4.1 - but its not for me yet - and I think its only a small step in the the right direction, thats if it doesnt end up going to court...

Thank you. You've said things much better than my poor attempts on this thread. It seems that all I invited was a flame fest for even implying that SAM boards were pricey.

This is great news for Amiga hobbyists.

Now how about they make a netbook (EeePC, etc) design around this hardware - I assume that the power consumption of a 667MHz PowerPC SoC isn't too high of course - and offer it to an OEM to mass produce for a tenth of the price. Then let us people buy it and install AmigaOS on it on the sly.

Surely the Efika is on-par with Blizzard & Cyberstorm expanded Classics?

While I agree about 99% with you that the Efika's RAM can't be expanded, it doesn't stop some people from trying -

Well done Hyperion and ACube! I hope you get hoards of customers.

Errr, no, you implied/said quite a bit more than that:

Quote:
This price is simply too high when you consider the uses for OS4.1. It has no office suite and no modern web browser. That pretty much makes it useless for doing any real work. So it's a privilege to run an OS?

What you basically said was that OS4 was useless, we shouldn't bother with it however cheap it was, and that we'd all be better of with Windows/Mac/etc.

Which is fine, if you don't like AmigaOS, and you don't get annoyed that Windows Vista can pause for ages when simply *deleting a file* on a 3GHz dual-core processor with 2GB of RAM. Then by all means don't get a machine capable of OS4 - but as others have said, in that case *why are you even here*?

Very good post about your guitar. I bought a guitar years ago for the very same reason as you. It cost a bundle and like you I'll never be ready for prime time, but it sure is fun.

That is exactly why I paid all that money for an AmigaOne XE when it came out and why I pay for the new version 4.1. It may also be why I purchase another machine to run AmigaOS4 on. I really enjoy using my Amigas and keeping them updated.

If the SAM hasn't got Amiga inc's blessing (I doubt this), and Hyperion lose the court case, the plug may be pulled on the SAM and we may have to wait a loooong time while we wait for Amiga inc to introduce new hardware

How could Amiga Inc stop SAM's being sold? They are sold for purposes other than OS4. At worst we might have to get hold of a SAM-compatible OS4 image from "unofficial channels".

@Ferrels

Incase you failed to understand BillE's point, he wants an SAM as his A1 doesnt cut it anymore, and that IS WHY HE IS IN THIS THREAD.

i also have an AmigaOne, actually i own several but i still want an SAM with OS4.1 on it.

just because you love to pick a fight on this forum doesnt mean that everyone else is also just hanging in here just for the popcorn and pancakes(and the fights).

As to name calling, yes thats not the way, infact the proper way would be to just chase you off the forum...right? , as thats the way you would do it by the looks of things.

PS: don't you go into public relations and market research as you seriously failed in such an easy thread as this one by even calling THE potential buyer not a buyer as he allready had a 4 year old board capable of running the OS.

PPS:you have been "reported".

Well there is a complete system sold on ACubes site for ¤620-795 which on the current exchange rate makes it around £550-700. This is a heck of a lot cheaper than the £1400 for the AmigaOne XE systems when they were launched. Admittedly you still have the OS itself on top of this, but it still isn't an unreasonable amount for an "Amiga" system.

Again though, comparing the cost of a SAM to an Apple system is not the most appropriate since Apple originally made their own hardware, and now they use mainstream x86 boards, their OS is still predominantly tied to their (licensed) hardware. It is also sold (and manufactured) in much higher volumes allowing for a much lower consumer cost.

Excuse me for butting in.. Not arguing your point about the price..
Everyone entitled to their opinion.

What did you pay for your current PC setup?

I payed more that 1100¤ about two years ago for mine. It is still quite a useful
setup by todays standards. But it would need a new gfx card if I got Vista. The
same system would probably go for 600-700¤ today.

My brother asked me to get him a cheap PC for home use. I got him the cheapest
I could find at the time (250¤), complete with everything except a TFT.
Now he's complaining that it's crap. When he downloads stuff and burns discs he
gets errors on the discs. And the system really crawls.
I told him you get what you pay for. But he refuses to pay more for a new
computer... Point being that a useful PC setup probably would start at 400-500¤.
The prices are compared to what stuff cost here in Sweden.

Personally I don't think a complete setup with SAM and OS4.1 for 700-800¤
is that expensive, not cheap either though. 500¤ would be cheap IMO.
The specs isn't that important for a Amiga system until it gets software that
presses the hardware to its limits. IMO there aren't even a handful that comes
close yet. Also the masses don't need to know what's inside the case. That's for
us geeks. More important than hardware specs is available software.

Excellent! What make of guitar is it?

And never say you're not good enough to get up and do a gig or performance in front of anyone; of course you can, you'll not want to get off once you're started! Major respect to anyone who can play the guitar, ahem, and code an OS kernel .

So when, sorry if, my band tours Germany, which I hope it will at some point, you're definitely getting up and doing a tune with us. I'll be sure to keep you in mind for that dual solo spot in the middle of the set

Exactly. Joerg's recent work on OWB has made a significant dent in the lack of important software, and the Cairo libraries will make it easier to port some of the smaller OSS office programs; OOo is probably too bloated to run on a sub-GHz box, regardless of CPU or OS.
