if the vast majority of us are running aos4.1 and sam, I think we'd see a distinct change of attitude around here... don't you ;)

I hope that Acube puts some more attention to the presentation of the sam+os4 on their site when the Beta-Phase is over.
How about to offer a _complete_ bundle (board, case, hd, os, etc. etc.) in different variations and give each variation an own description and pictures.
So that the customer can see quickly on one view which options he has. Also improve the web-formular for buying and putting some navigation (Buy, Specs, FAQ, ...) on the site.

Not every intrested person is a hardware freak and the site which lists the options/features is confusing on the first view.

Apart from that I am looking forward to get a new amiga on christmas hopefully :)

Why we would like to pay the price of a good pc system, for a hard that is (at least) 5 years old???

You confuse old hardware with a mini-itx modern system. Sam has many things in modern standard for example sata ports. And it is a mini itx system.

The price is right especailly for our market. Can we go on now?

My SAM has no active cooling, it is a silent, mini itx cool system, exactly what i want. Sure more power we have, the better it is but we have hardware now. If you don't support SAM, we could not see any future Amiga. Luckily, 533Mhz model sold out and so not all of us are blind.

Nice looking case. Echos of A500 and 1200. Is that a mouse pad I see?

That finger should be pointed in the direction of Snoqualmie, Washington, not towards Hyperion nor ACube.

That is probably true. There is a lot of frustration which I am hearing in these threads over no hardware for so long a time. Users want to get OS4.

I remember when I bought my A500 oh so long ago now. I wanted an A2000, but could not afford it. It was not until after the A4000 came out that the prices of the A2000s came down enough for me to afford one. The one I got was the old 4.3 motherboard. There again I wanted at least a 6.2 motherboard, but was happy with what I got. Later I was able to afford two more A2000s with both of them being the 6.2 motherboard.

What I am trying to say is that I did not log onto any web site and bitch over the prices of hardware. I sucked it up and bought what I could afford. The problem was my earning power at that time. I always bought older used Amigas and maxed them out as best I could. I was never able to afford a new Amiga until I paid off my house. Shortly after my house was paid the AmigaOne came out. I ordered one right away and I did not go to the forums and bitch about the price.

@All

..those who say there aren´t games/apps that need more power:
DOOM 3 source code is right behind the corner (it is said to be released this/next same month)

.. I would like to see how it will "run" on Sam

And more:

For what do you want to use your Amiga? what kind of future do you want for her?

Play lemmings on UAE one-more-time? watch 9 fingers again? compress on lha your old compilation of mods?

Please: wake up from the past and welcome to 2008!!!

- Don´t we deserve to watch high quality or HD movies?

- Can´t we listen to good quality music WHILE we do something more?

- Realsoft 3D and Blender ports will NEVER EVER happen? and Gimp?

- No decent office suite that allow to move well designed docs or presentations with a lot of graphics?

...The list could go endless. The time for keep being the #1 in the list of platforms with the most pathetic hardware, SHOULDN´T!

I would prefer a game console for games... 80% of people today like small, quiet, energy efficient, integrated computers, which allows them watch movies, TV, listen radio, check email, write letter to grandmother, make a home budget, plan appointment.

Other people would like to have a 8 core monster which takes 1000W (but this is like 5% of population).

Some guys use computer for movie editing (like me) and other cpu heavy task. But I don't see ANY movie editing software for Amiga? Why? Because there is no ANY hardware running AmigaOS, there is nobody using it.

We need to start from something... even "slow" to let the people develop software for this system. Than we will change... maybe.

Is that actually a question? Or a statement. Either way, never ever is a bit over the top.

Show me proof that the DOOM 3 source is due soon, as a quote from John Carmack's news item about this, or Ryan for that matter.

last time i checked it was due in end of 2009 or mid 2010.

@all

Yes it would be nice if the hardware was cheaper. Yes it would be nice if the OS was cheaper. Yes it would be nice if there was more software to make this a usable system by today's standards for most purposes.

Yes not everyone will be able to afford this. Yes on a rational plane of thought the machine is probably not worth the price. And chasing the dream of making this OS more widely accepted on any large scale is probably a fool's errand.

We are at a point where a small company in Acube is trying to support us with an option to do SOMETHING. And we are at a point where a small software company in Hyperion with its contractors has come far with their hobby OS, and despite the price of the OS they will certainly take a loss on the whole affair.

You have two choices. You either buy despite all this, because you want to be a part of this community in a way you were not able to before. And hope we make some progress as a small community going forward. Or you stay on the sidelines for a number of reasons, maybe its affordability, maybe its wanting to see what happens in court, or maybe its just too late in your view to take the plunge for all the reasons above.

But what is the point of comparing this computing experience to the current world of Windows or Mac? Those who like running something different will likely be on board. Those wanting to relive part of their youth in computing will probably be on board. Those who want Amiga to always stand for cutting edge will likely wait to see if that day ever comes again.

Just remember that it costs money to make money and making SAM was no small feat. Yes they have an entirely other market motivation in the embedded market as well. But they still deserve to make money back to pay for all that it took to get here and to turn some profit if they can. We need to pay to play. And if we fail as a group to step to the plate as consumers to a decent degree, then why would anyone else ever bother to try to make a product for us ever again? Bill McEwen probably has plenty of years of hot air left in him. Is that all you want for the future? Or do you want to have a SAM running OS 4.1 to play with?

Yes, porting to X86 would be a solution. It is not going to happen any time soon because plainly, the amount of work for that is pretty staggering and out of question right now.

Interesting......

No 'We can't do a x86 port because we dont have a license to do a x86 port' ??

Now it is 'It's to much work to do a x86 port' ??

Does this mean that AInc is out of the way ?? Hence also the SAM port.
Or am I reading to much into this comment ?

Anyway great news !!

Another question ? How long did it take for you guys to port OS4.1 to SAM ?

Thanks,

Martin

They are making an offer. You are free to take up on it, or don't. If you think you can do better, write an email to Hyperion with a business plan and hardware specs and we can talk.

You are free to voice your opinion, as much as I am free to voice mine. But repeating it over and over will not make a difference.

Question is, since this is the solution, since you know this has been the only solution for *years* now, why do you stick on spending ressources on PPC ?

Question is, have you been on a tour to the north pole for the last five years, or haven't you noticed what happened?

I guess, but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, that the sooner work on x86 is started, the sooner it will be finished...

How do you suppose can that be financed? Do you have an idea? You don't have any idea how much work would be involved.

Working on something you know can't be sold because the hardware is rare/expensive is really a big problem as I see it...

Well, guess what, I don't share your view that it can't be sold. It already has been bought by people even on the vague hope that it will run AmigaOS at one point.

I say it again, buy it or not, it's your choice.

People are like children. Blabla no HW... blabla... now when its out blabla cost to much. blabla.... Stop crying kids.

You either dont buy it or you buy it. Its just like that. If you dont buy it so WHAT. others will. Sam is much cheaper then my A1 back in the early bird times.
If i didnt have an A1 or it got dead i would buy SAM.
