Software News   Software News : AmiCygnix V1.0 released
   posted by CygnusEd on 20-Dec-2008 23:37:22 (8111 reads)
On OS4-Depot is the final version of AmiCygnix for AmigaOS4 available. AmiCygnix is a Unix environment, which makes it possible, to port unix software easily. AmiCygnix replaces the prereleases of Cygnix.

The software published for Cygnix will not work with AmiCygnix anymore! These packages will be rereleased step by step. The packages of AbiWord 2.6.2 and Gnumeric 1.6.3 will be published first.

The base installation is now separated into two packages:

A basic package, which contains all necessary things to install and run AmiCygnix applications. Important news:

* Complete new desktop.
* New display drivers. One of them can open the desktop in a window on the workbench.
* Mousewheel support.
* Completely recompiled for Newlib.
* Support for amiga clipboard.
* Better stability by avoiding the typical unix assigns (e.g. USR:) and saving the environmant variables into an own subdirectoy.

A second tools package contains following software:

* The filemanager ROX-Filer 2.9
* The webbrowser NetSurf 1.2
* The editor Leafpad 0.8.12 with UTF-8 support
* The picture viewer GPicView 0.1.9
* The PDF viewer Xpdf 3.02
* The GTK2 prefs editor LXAppearance 0.2
* The window manager prefs editor ObConf 2.0.3
* ...

The current version of AbiWord does not support greek input. I've found a greek input method handler for GTK2 I could add to abiword. But I would need your help to test it.

Hmmm... Is it likely that there will be a version of Cygnix that will work on JXFS partitions in the future? I'm not sure I want to go reformatting my hard drive just to try it out...

I'm afraid not. I really don't know, why it doesn't work. JXFS is a 64bit filesystem, but SFS2 too (or am I wrong?). SFS2 is no problem. The funny thing is, that you can copy the AmiCygnix installation from a JXFS partition to an (for example) SFS partition and it works there. So the stored data is not corrupt.

I've googled for a polish input module, but I could't find one. Are you sure you need it? I don't know about polish keyboards. Which characters are impossible for you to type?

Aww, that's a shame... I thought JXFS was supposed to be API-compatible with old 32-bit filesystems for software that doesn't use the 64-bit calls. Do you think it's a bug in JXFS?

Hi,

First, thank you for the release... you did a good work!

My first program in the list that I use with AmiCygnix is EasyTag-2.0, after
installation I could not make it work, I had to return with the old version.

I though that a reinstall of EasyTag will fix the problem but I can't find it on
OS4Depot anymore.

Thank you.

Bye!

Hmm, maybe this: http://www.mimuw.edu.pl/~wolinski/linux/xkb-pl.html

Section "Keyboard"
Protocol "Standard"
AutoRepeat 500 5
XkbRules "xfree86"
XkbModel "pc104"
XkbLayout "pl"
XkbOptions "grp:switch"
EndSection

As mentioned in the new posting, the programs for Cygnix prerelease do not work with AmiCygnix! So you must use the old Cygnix for now, sorry .
But EasyTag will follow (Maybe in a newer version).

Thanks for the informations! This is a solution using the X xkb extension. I was looking for a GTK2 input module. Maybe your solutions works, but in the meantime I've found a kind of universal input module, which needs a translation table (text file). Maybe this is interesting for you??

I still have the same problem with version as the previous.

If I try to connect to the Xserver from a remote client (ie either of my two debian linux boxes) the the whole system locks up.

I do the following

Launch AmiCygnix from icon

Then in an amigaos4 shell I do the following:

xhost 192.168.1.101
192.168.1.101 being added to access control list
xhost: must be on local machine to add or remove hosts.
4.RAM Disk:> ssh -l andy 192.168.1.101
andy@192.168.1.101's password:
Linux linuxp3 2.6.26-1-686 #1 SMP Wed Nov 26 19:14:11 UTC 2008 i686

The programs included with the Debian GNU/Linux system are free software;
the exact distribution terms for each program are described in the
individual files in /usr/share/doc/*/copyright.

Debian GNU/Linux comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY, to the extent
permitted by applicable law.
Last login: Tue Dec 23 19:45:52 2008 from 192.168.1.100
andy@linuxp3:~$ export DISPLAY=192.168.1.100:0
andy@linuxp3:~$ xterm

If I then press return all locks up.

Why does xhost say I must be on a local machine to add and remove hosts when I *am* on my local machine?

The above procedure works when perform from LinuxPPC on my A1

I solved the above!

I changed Cygnix/DISPLAY from localhost:0 to broad:0 where broad corresponds to 192.168.1.100 ie my machines IP given by the router.

Xhost could then add 192.168.1.101 to the allowed hosts list and I could connect with xterm.

So it looks to me like a lockup occurs if a program attempts to connect from a disallowed host.

Next problem

Try to run iceweasel from the new xterm on Cygnix and I get

The program 'firefox-bin' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)'.
(Details: serial 73 error_code 2 request_code 135 minor_code 1)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

I get the same error if I try to run synaptic on my remote machine.

So looks like I'm still stuck with VNC for remote access to my linux boxes

@broadblues

You can also add the IP to the file "Cygnix:CygnixPPC/etc/X0.hosts"! Then you don't need to add it with xhost. xhost does not work properly.
