hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : Allegro v1.0 for AmigaOS4 is released.
   posted by Troels on 29-Dec-2008 16:33:58 (7106 reads)
As absolute proof that miracles do happen over Christmas, Hitman/Code HQ does what even he thought was impossible and actually releases Allegro for OS4!

I thought it would be a relatively small project but it turned out to be a terribly complex game library and not small at all. Add to that periods of laziness, busyness, drunkeness, being on holiday, an unhealthy Guitar Hero addiction and the fact that my boss actually makes me work 8 hours a day on non Amiga things, and we have a port that takes 18 months instead of 18 weeks.

But here it is. No MIDI suport yet and small pieces of less used functionality are missing, but it's good enough for a 1.0 release to open the doors for some games to be ported.

On that subject there are 4 release games!

Sword of Fargoal - One of my favourite games on the c64! It was worth porting Allegro just for this one.

Ghouls 'n' Ghosts Remix - No need to explain this one.

Alex the Allegator 4 - An old skool platformer.

Zombiepox - A bit odd. With brains.

As well as the games, you will need to download the Allegro runtime shared object. For developers who want to port new games you will also need the Allegro SDK.

It's all available now on OS4 Depot in the uploads directory, awaiting the OS4 Depot moderator to give it the ok. Until then you can download it directly from there:

EDIT:
They've moved it already Download them here.

I think he should use the money on a thing that's (almost) as much fun as the two things mentioned above. A thing that would last much longer though.

Yep, it's open source. I still have to discuss a couple of internal changes with the original Allegro authors, and then once those are sorted out I can submit the entire port to the official Subversion repository. Then anyone can get a copy and get it working with AROS and Morph OS.

@Crumb

Soon I'll submit the source to the official Allegro Subversion repository, so then if someone wants they can do an OS4 port. It will probably be too slow to use on the Amiga Classic though. But on WinUAE it will be ok.

Unfortunately the games have to be programmed to actually check the joystick and most games only check the keyboard. So you would have to add support to each game individually and I don't really have time for that. I've got another big project to work on now Allegro is done...

However, I do have an idea for a future version of Allegro, which will give joystick support to games that aren't programmed for it. I'll add joystick emulation. So the way it will work is that for games that don't support joysticks, like GGR, Allegro will simulate key presses when the joystick is moved.

Thanks for the good idea - I've added it to the feature list for Allegro 1.1!

I donwloaded it and played the Ghouls 'n' Ghosts Remix, is a great program although my Sam needs 100 or 200 Mhz more for that Sir "I have forgot his name" runs more allegre, but is a great work.

Got a couple of questions for you :)

1) Allegro source code is at version Allegro 4.9.7.1 while the port you made is from allegro 1.3.1 ? I cant even find that anywere :)

Is there a versioning difference somewere ?

2) GGR has a newer version available with nicer gfx and maybe its faster

you can find the game and sourcecode here btw:

Anyway looking forward to more stuff coming from you !

@SimplePPC

The Allegro port is actually based on 4.3.10 - *not* 1.3.1. The number 1.3.1 is a typo in the ReleaseNotes.txt file that I have now fixed. Sorry for the confusion.

As for Allegro 4.9, that is what will soon be Allegro 5.0 and is completely different to Allegro 4.3 and incompatible with it. It is the future Allegro and there are not yet any games for it. That's why I ported the "old" one. So my Allegro port is based on the latest "useful" version of Allegro. Allegro's version numbering system is very confusing!

I have downloaded the new GGR source and I'll take a look at it when I get a chance. Cheers!

Hi,

thank you for the explanation

I noticed some collision detection problems in the 'old' GGR, i wondered if that was in the Windows versions aswell and that is how i found out about the new version .
