Software News   Software News : New AmigaOS 4.1 SDK available
   posted by EntilZha on 26-Jan-2009 13:33:12 (10901 reads)
Leuven, Belgium - 26. January, 2009

Hyperion Entertainment is proud to announce the availability of the Software Development Kit Version 53.13 for AmigaOS 4.1.

The new SDK features the gcc 4.2.4 compiler, binutils 2.18 (with support for the PowerPC 440ep), as well as updated header files and autodocs for AmigaOS 4.1.

The SDK download is available for all interested parties via anon access at Hyperions FTP Server:
ftp://hyperion-entertainment.biz/SDK

The SDK is available in two versions: A "noncontrib" version that only contains the compiler and tools plus the documentation and header files for AmigaOS 4.1, and a "Lite" version that contains additional contributions.

Cool!

But will the optimizations for Sam440 effect AmigaOne performance?

Will it lead to OS4.x AmigaOne and OS4.x Sam440 binaries being released?

Alex.

Generally it is not recommended to compile specifically for 440ep processors, however, it might (and only might) make things like DVD playback work better on the SAM, for example.

We'll see. In general, I see no need to optimise for 440ep specifically.

Since compiling for 440 means GCC can use the special, extended intruction set of the 440EP which is not supported by other PowerPC chips, the 440-optimized binaries will probably not work on an A1. However, for most things the speedup is very minor (1-2% from my tests so far), so I don't think it's worth releasing 440 binaries for most things, except for some special, very speed-critical code, which can make heavy use of the extended instructions.

@Cobra

What do the extended instructions do?

@PR

Me neither, but the coders are happy so I'm happy.

Cheers to all involved.

The "latest ones" (SDI_hook.h latest update 06.10.06) are on Yam svn, while the included ones are dated 2005 :) So if damato gives you these ones well... he is working too much ;)

I haven't installed it yet here ... Does anyone can tell us what it contains ? What are the new features ? I suppose we can now create shared objects but what more ?

Thanks for the work done, much appreciated. After the news version of vbcc, it is a good news for developpers !

@Corto:
Cairo SDK is included, new DOS functions, new Graphics function, SDK for timezone.library... for example.

EDIT: I just did a quick diff between old and new Include and Autodoc dirs and I found that at least 328 files have changed so many improvements have been done I guess

What about crashes?

Quake3 runs at 1 frame per second. Like a real A1200.

UAE crashes.

Mainly things that crash but were fine on A1.

@Hypex

If something crashes that has been compiled for PowerPC, the fix is not to enable 440ep optimisations, the fix is the fix the bug in the software.
