I read in forums about sam Problems

In reality there are very few Sam440 problems known, mostly it is user problems (mistakes) or OS4.1 problems. Off the top of my head:

+ The compositing lock-up problem is (IIRC) an OS4.1 problem, not a Sam440 problem.
+ Some USB memory sticks not being recognised/etc, is an OS4.1 problem, not a Sam440 problem.
+ USB being 1.1 speed not 2.0 speed is an OS4.1 problem, not a Sam440 problem.
+ Some older apps not working is caused by OS4.1's new memory/etc system, or more modern 3D Gfx Card (in case of 3D games like Quake 2).
+ DVD playback has been fixed for OS4.1 on Sam440 (was a DvPlayer bug).
+ OS4.1's printed installation guide is not completely clear on a few points, but someone has already written their own guide.

- Sam440's VGA (not DVI) output seems poor on recent mobos.
- Sam440 comes with DMA disabled by default, but easy to enable.
- OS4.1 partition template is missing from Sam440 OS4.1 beta (minor oversight).

EDIT: As COBRA pointed out, discussion of Sam stuff is Off Topic, so please start a new thread to discuss it further (probably I shouldn't have gone into details here).

Hi Chris,

How do I enable DMA on SAM?

And why is it disabled by default? Does it give problems when on?

Thank you

Corretion: the bug was in a 3rd party DVD plugin, not DvPlayer or the official DVD plugin included with DvPlayer (which cannot play encrypted DVDs for obvious legal reasons).

I'm not aware of any differences in VGA output quality between more and less recent boards. The VGA quality issues I'm aware of are with DVI->VGA adaptors, the picture you get when connecting the on-board VGA headers to a VGA connector are just fine.

It's rather off-topic here and it's been mentioned in several threads already, but just so you don't have to search through the threads:

You can enable it with the following command (in a shell):

NVSetVar sii3114ide_xfer G00G

And to disable it:

NVSetVar sii3114ide_xfer g00g

It's disabled by default because OS4.1 for the Sam is beta. In general don't have problems with DMA mode (I just burned a few CDs on the Sam with MakeCD while surfing the net, etc. with UDMA on), except for the mysterious issue when running the game TalesOfTamar, which someone here reported.

Anyway I'd suggest to take discussions about Sam and DMA to the appropriate thread.

You can enable DMA permanently in Uboot as described here. As far as I know, COBRA's suggestion of NVSetVar is lost upon reboot.

@COBRA
TheDaddy reported an early ("first batch"?) Sam440 as having perfect VGA output, but a more recent Sam440 as not.

Yeah, sorry about blaming DvPlayer, I mentally consider the 3rd-party plugin as part of DvPlayer since it is so essential.

The article isn't really accurate.. RTAS is a single node in the OpenFirmware device tree, and it behaves like any other package in OF. It has a method to instantiate a copy of itself at a given address in a memory area that sticks around.

It is part of the CHRP specifications.

Macs lack the RTAS, and hence require direct chipset support.

According to the article, these things are supported by RTAS, and they're currently available (save lots of pennies!). So, how soon can we see a port (or will the Peg2 version work OOTB)?

Yes indeed. And I am also missing the FPGA connector and a few other pins (according to ACube these are not needed by the end user, but as Chris pointed out imagine if Commdore had left the clock pins out on the A1200 motherboards!).

Well this was surprising to read! Well done on getting yet another platform added to OS4.1's repetoire!

Exactly the same reason there won't be a mac mini port.
It is closed hardware, and apple are very unlikely to divulge enough info to Hyperion to enable such a port without a substantial return.

Why do I keep reading this? Linux runs on most, if not all, PPC Macs, and the developers didn't get any docs from Apple. This shows that, firstly, it's possible, and secondly, there's source code available to refer to while developing a port.

@ncafferkey

IMO: it still is a big task and a bit difficult to support professionally

Powerstation would be a lot more sane task (I might be wrong, though).

Or perhaps support some PPC virtual machine / AOS4 player that uses readily available services of PPC linux / OSX.

Great news - I really am impressed that Hyperion have done this.

I don't think that it will translate into lots of sales but it is a great piece of PR to reunite the remaining Amigans as much as could ever be possible.

Well done again to Hyperion.

How much memory can Amiga OS4 take?

I believe if you get matching ram, and a bit of luck you can get 2gig in the peg II, but Morphos I can only see 1.5 for some reason, would 4.1 see it all?

Note: I have never once gone into virtual ram: on my 512Mb A1, so the qustion is fairly academic if I'm being honest

the peg 2 has firewire and Gb ethernet, will these work with os4.1 in the future or do they already work?

GB Ethernet is an option. Firewire will probably not be supported, it makes little sense IMO since everything is using USB. USB 2.0 support would be a better investment.

Because MOS/OS4 have no C Compilers and use GCC what is special written, that it run on many systems as possible.

What does that have to do with Linux?

Some people, including yourself, seem to confuse OpenSource, GPL, GNU, and Linux.

OpenSource and GPL development is perfectly possible under Windows, AmigaOS or MacOS as well.

Linux has closed-source drivers.

So what you really mean is OpenSource, not Linux.

As I pointed out in other threads, discussion about "can we have OS 4.1 on X" are fruitless. They are off-topic as well.

FWIW, RTAS alone allows you a certain abstraction from the Chipset, i.e. PCI access and the like. It will not free you from supporting the CPU for example, and there is no generic PowerPC cpu support since they all have different ID's and different methods for handling caches etc. Also, mainboard components will not magically work through RTAS.

So the answer is no. It will not work out of the box.

Linux also runs on Furby's... you're not going to propose that as a target, do you?

In theory, 2 GB, but since some additional memory areas are required for certain tasks, the real limit is lower.
