Software News   Software News : Giddy returns to the Amiga!
   posted by xeron on 13-Feb-2009 21:20:12 (7758 reads)
In the early 90's, the shareware games "Wibble World Giddy" and "Giddy 2" were released for the Amiga. The proved pretty popular, but then in 2001 the third game, "Giddy 3" was released for MS-DOS. In 2008, I contacted the author and obtained the assembler source code, and converted it to C, and now its available for AmigaOS 4.1!

Download it from OS4Depot.

Well, it wasn't so much converted as rewritten using the original sources as a reference.

I think AB3D 2 would be quite a bit harder, especially given how awful its source code is :)

I don't remember this game but well done and thanks for putting in the effort.

There's just one thing; A PC game in assembler in 2001? I didn't know they even used assembler on the PC when C was the rage. Did the original use the planar gfx mode on VGA? Since people say that is best for 2d.

Damn I wanted to do this first. Oh well.

It's funny, I once asked where the source was and no one told me AFAIR. I searched and found it very hard to find it on Aminet. I found everything about ab3d and other non-related stuff but not the source. The result was I never had the source so I could look at it and so an OS4 version was never made: Did anyone create an RTG version from the source? Was anything ever done with it at all?

I think the Aminet search engine needs a revamp. Say I want to search for LhA or MUI. You rarely get a link to the LhA program or the MUI user archive. The dirs are hard to navigate but I've gone off topic now so goodbye.

@Noel

Adjust the tooltypes of your monitor driver to suit the frequency settings of your monitor. For details see sys:Documentation/Picasso96/ScreenModes.doc

I've created a facebook page for it, so if you like the game and are on facebook, why not become a fan? :)

@Hypex
Assembler is the ideal language for programming under MS-DOS, and C is the ideal language for programming under Windows. So it is unsurprising that a game written for MS-DOS was done using assembler.

When i see this little screenshoot, i thinking - resolution of game must be only 320x200 for make looks it good ? I mean play in 640x480 (i not said about 1024x768) will be looks not so 'smooth' ?

Hi,

Well there is something missing in my system because when I want to start the game I have
a little windows saying "Require Object Missing" and the title of the window is ELF Library.

Any idea ?

Thank you.

Make sure that you have:
libSDL-1.2.so
libstdc++.so
libgcc.so
libc.so

Sadly the game seems to not support Joystick or AmigaInput :(
