Software News   Software News : Giddy returns to the Amiga!
posted by xeron on 13-Feb-2009 21:20:12 (7777 reads)
In the early 90's, the shareware games "Wibble World Giddy" and "Giddy 2" were released for the Amiga. The proved pretty popular, but then in 2001 the third game, "Giddy 3" was released for MS-DOS. In 2008, I contacted the author and obtained the assembler source code, and converted it to C, and now its available for AmigaOS 4.1!

Download it from OS4Depot.

Sadly the game seems to not support Joystick or AmigaInput :(

Not yet, anyway

Will it run on MorphOS?

I don't think OS4Emu works with shared objects.

It would be nice to recreate an Amiga 'OS legal' version that ran on all the platforms from classic 3.1 to 4.1 and MorphOS ( because they both can run OS legal 3.1 apps).

My main 'amiga' system these days is an eee pc mini laptop running Amiga Forever.

Fair enough. I just wrote versions for the platforms I wanted to run it on. Since all my chosen targets supported hardware acceleration (GL on Windows & OS4, GX on Wii), I just wrote it for those.

GL support on 3.x is pretty crap.

Version 1.1 should be hitting the Depot any minute which fixes some bugs, so you are encouraged to re-download.

Had to settle for a 1280 x 1024 screen to get giddy going. I have not cheered up the down in the mouth eel nor escaped the black earth on the two occasions I've been caught. Perhaps the eel would be cheered by a change in tune if that could be done.

You're not able to cheer the eel up for quite a way into the game. I dunno what you mean by "escaped the black earth".

I'd like to donate to the original author and you Xeron, how do I do the latter?

Donate to "donations@giddy3.co.uk", we're splitting them 50/50.

Thanks for your support!

already have posted that on amigans.net ..

It works on Sam440ep & AOS4.1 but everything is "green", means, the colours are wrong in the game. Any solution?

Thanks,
nexus

No idea. Do other SDL/OpenGL games work on your system? Others have reported that the game runs perfectly on their SAM systems.

Oh. How do you reproduce it? You're certainly not supposed to end up "in" the earth.

I have the same problems with some other GL games, like openArena in HW-render mode. Others like GLQuake for AOS4 or Payback 68k works fine with this respekt.

greetings,
nexus

Hmm... i really don't know why that is. Maybe there is something wrong with your SAM, or something wrong with the SAM Warp3D driver that only shows its head on some configs.

Might be worth emailing one of the friedens about it.

Ok, i reported that to HJ Frieden. We'll see. Strange, that I don't have these problems with GLQuake or FPSE+Forsaken (the playstation emulator FPSE and the Game Forsaken) or Payback.

Perhaps it is only SDL related? But openarena is not an SDL application, isn't it?

And please, please .. DON'T say something like "Maybe there is something wrong with your SAM". That hurts! I DON'T WANT that something is wrong with my beloved machine!

Is it for 4.1 exclusively?

My 4.0 classic reports the following error:
Quote:

Detected MiniGL v1.5
Activating screen bodge.
SDL says: Failed to create MiniGL context
