"800 MHz"

The right direction!

"# Up to 4 serial ports
# 2 I2C interfaces
# SPI interface
# 64 pins for General Purpose I/O"

So, the FPGA expansion connector etc. are still included, good, good.

"...CMOS (0.13 um) tech..."

Imagine if we got PPC SOC done with 65 nanometer technology !

This is awesome news!! But a few questions for the thread:

1. Am I reading this correctly:

Sam440ep 667 - 465,00 euro
Sam Flex 800 - 399,00 euro

Wow! I was expecting the Flex would carry a higher price.

Thanks Acube for bring prices down while improving performance and expandibility!

2. Does the Sam440ep version of AOS 4.1 work on Flex straight-away, or will Hyperion be releasing a Flex-specific version?

3. Where is the Sam Flex performance-wise, relative to a Peg II?

@jingof
"3. Where is the Sam Flex performance-wise, relative to a Peg II?"

I think, it depends heavily on the task that is being done.

For tasks where HDD and RAM speed have more importance than the raw CPU speed, SAM can perform equally with Peg2. But in CPU intensive tasks PPC440ep@800mhz can not really compete with G3 or G4 @800Mhz because of the 440's lack of L2 cache.

Ah.. no L2 cache. Curious that they would omit L2 cache. Surely L2 cache doesn't add that much expense overall.

@jingof

Because PPC440 is a embedded CPU, it's goal is to deliver "enough" performance with as little heat dissipation as possible. For example in telecom and automation use L2 cache is not that important.

Hopefully we get boards with some other CPU than 440 real soon.

In a year or so, it should be possible to use a 1Ghz PPC that has both L2 and basic 3D GPU built in the same chip.

Small steps....

L2 Cache is an expensive part of a CPU, the logic required to handle a relatively large (256k+) cache at efficient speeds is quite involved, and the 440 is an embedded CPU, so it's not so important there. Its bigger brother, the 460 does have L2 cache though.

Why not wait one year or more for the next top secret board for AOS4.1 and made by Acube (or another manufacturer) ??? I think the story wil not end by the flex version.

What you seem to be not getting is that if we all keep waiting for a mysterious one-day-to-come board, the manufacturer will never get enough sales to cover R&D for this new board. I, for one, am definitely getting a SAM this year.

440 also lacks Altivec unit.

@lylehaze

here is the translation of some answers from m3x in an Italian forum (iksnet):

1) SAM flex is using the same OS 4.1 version as the SAM440. All the onboard devices are supported.
2) the two onboard NICs are supported, but not at the same time yet. A new driver will be necessary (the OS4 TCP/IP stack already supports multiple concurrent NICs). Linux supports them both at the same time already.
3) the SAM440 667MHz cannot be overclocked; the SAM flex can, but just because of some changes in the motherboard (or so m3x seems to explain).
4) the price does not include OS 4.1
5) they did not test any AGP riser card
6) the 800MHz version is between 10% and 15% faster on average than the 667MHz version. Overclocking still does not require CPU active cooling
7) No special offers for the SAM440 are planned.
8) No further important news from ACube are planned for this month.
9) for the time being, Radeons 92x0 are the suggested graphic cards to be used

Then, the Flex supports 1Gb of RAM. Not sure what kind of RAM though.

Hope this helps,
Stefano.

i think people hope it supports a single 1Gb DIMM (not DIM as on acube flex page ) and Unbuffered + NON-ECC as £34.49 is a good price, else its £52.89

No, i do not intend to overclock any Amiga-system. If that is done by the people behind the hardware itself, like this 800Mhz SAM440ep-flex, then that is fine.

I won't. The lesson has been taught so many times, and i am serious this time..
