Software News   Software News : Bounty to port Gnash to AmigaOS4.1
   posted by Troels on 17-Apr-2009 14:56:54 (12037 reads)

The Gnash bounty is meant to help close the gap in web browsing experience by bringing Macromedia/Adobe Flash support to AmigaOS4.1.

Ultimate goal of this bounty is to get:
a) A standalone Flash player, callable from within scripts, and
b) A web browser plugin based on the NetScape plugin API.
(Please click read more)

Afxgroup (Andrea Palmatè) has asked to be assigned to the Gnash bounty which was originally proposed by Samo79.
The deadline for this project is 1st March 2010 for both a working standalone player and a working NSAPI plugin.

Is paypal the only way to donate?
Anyway, I'll surely donate in the next days!

@GGW
I cant test it myself atm (non working A1).
You click the donate button -> enter the amount -> clicks on "update total" -> and logs into PayPal.

It used to work but I can't remember if it has been like this all the time or if Paypal have changed something. Could you try using OWB?
Is every IBrowse user having this problem with Paypal?

@Andres
For now Paypal is the only way of donating. Out of curiosity, what would you have preferred?

@Troels
since I don't use PayPal, I would have preferred a normal credit card payment, but I understand that for things like bounties PayPal is the easiest (if not the only) way...

@Andres
Paypal works with credit cards!

Without opening any Paypal account you are still able to use Visa, American express and Mastercard.

Just enter your donation amount and click "update total".
Instead of logging into Paypal click "Continue" (it's at the bottom, next to the credit card logos) and you are guided through the usual way of using credit cards online. Easy

@Saimon69

Andrea port and changes to mplayer is open source,
if you read the mplayer source tree from Andrea you see that fab made changes as well, so the source is shared, and changes has benefited MorphOS and AmigaOS4 (and possibly AROS).

One think that might even be more beneficial is was a shard CVS server, so synchronize changes.

About Gnash I believe its a shared object under Linux, and there so its good chance its going to be shared object under AmigaOS4, MorphOS and AROS does not support shared objects, AmigaOS4.x uses Reaction, MorphOS and AROS uses MUI, so its not always possible to benefit because of different API's that developer might decide to use.

i'm plan to post changes to the official Gnash tree as I made with mplayer too
and if someone want help me with the ports is very welcome (MOS,AROS)

Regard the screenshot.
It is an old version of gnash that use AGG and SDL that i've started some month ago just a few days Troels has started to see if the bounty was possible.

Now i'm work on the version that could be satisfy all bounty requests

@hans

Quote:
In your village mentality example, the idea is that each trades some of what they have for some of what someone else has. Now what will Amiga OS (4.x, or 3.x, because the MiniGL license would permit a back-port to an older Amiga OS) users/devs gain by changing the license? Nothing really, the benefit is all for those who wish to use it as a shortcut to 3D support on their OS (that would be just AROS, since MorphOS has its own OpenGL lib). The village mentality example breaks down as a metaphor here because there is nothing mutually beneficial about it; it would be a one-way street.

There is a mutual benefit in sharing resources, in that individually these three or four distinct camps are small and lack the break through size needed to encourage development, but together the user base is much larger, ie, a bigger pool of users to run the same software. This then becomes attractive to developers from either a small cottage business sense or from just numbers for free software.

We have to think as a community of diferent flavours but all together to grow.

@afxgroup

Are you able to make gnash as a plugins for Ibrowse (OS3.x and 4.x) ??? There are a ML for Ibrowse plugins and Mike Steed allready work on a flash player for the amiga.

Maybe a good idea is at least to make a contact between you and him to see if something could be made together ???

HUm: b) A web browser plugin based on the NetScape plugin API.
(Please click read more)

Not take care enough about this point who fullfill the question but not the 68k/AOS3.x version for Ibrowse 2.4.

@Mrodfr

OWB and IB uses the Netscape Plugin system,

The difference it that IB version of the Netscape Plugin system, is that IB has a not complete, and uses the AmigaOS library interface, not the shared object system.

FAB made changes to OWB for MorphOS for the plugin system see latest changes logs.

OWB for AmigaOS4.1 does not need any changes possibly we, will see what Jurg does.

First of all I want to say that I think that a port of gnash will be a worthwhile project and potentially useful to Amiga users.

But I also want to echo the caution of broadblues. I have also used gnash on Linux PPC on my AmigaOne and I was disappointed. I could not use BBC iPlayer and YouTube was unbearably slow. And I'm guessing that Flash video is 90% of what people want to use it for. Support for gnash is improving all the time, but it's written by PC users who often expect computers to have more processing power than we have.

As I say, I do think it's worthwhile. But I don't think people should have unrealistic expectations.

@dangerman

What about mobile phones and smaller devices don't they have flash?

OWB was horrible slow at first, but now its as fast as IB, flash might be optimized to work on slower systems.

But we will have a Flash player for we can see games, movies, presentations, or only one pluggin for OWB?
because I'll support this bounty if we have a Player to see movies, games etc. in swf format and movies and videoclips in flv format. Because other Flash Player for OWB or other browser is one proyect few ambitious.

the first plugin will be for IBrowse except if in the meanwile OWB will support the NPAPI. OWB support it onli in the GTK version at moment but i'm sure Joerg will enable it in the future.
Actually he is working on OWB to understand why and when it crash.
We have one year to realize all..
Hope i can do all

@clusteruk

My point wasn't about whether or not we should be sharing resources in general, but about MiniGL. Reread what I wrote again (the whole thing, not just the bit that you quoted).

I'll just add that developers can already create SDL/GLUT based OpenGL apps for practically any platform, regardless of what is or isn't done with MiniGL, TinyGL, StormMESA, or whatever else you wish to use.

@afxgroup

Good luck with the project. It would be very beneficial if OWB supported the NPAPI.

@afxgroup

At first, the plugins for Ibrowse will be made (68k/aos3.x) and of course run emulated on AOS4.x and maybe in the same time, for OWB (PPC/aos4.x) with the work joerg will put on OWB in the futur. It's OK ???

(just would like to be verry precise and clear for understanding well about the next year work you will made)

the best thing is about the screenshots I have seen that mean you have something who work allready on your computer that is a good point for the bounty

(I have planned to donate, maybe tomorrow but would like to be sure first, mainly the Ibrowse - aos3.x and OWB - aos4.x part).

@Hans & Troels

In fact what I was trying to say is that for me bounties are generally here to find how much interest people have in a certain project and are ready to spare money on it to motivate a developper to do it. Here this is the reverse : one developper found a project, manage to have a (semi-?)working version then a bounty is set up with that very developper assigned to it (preventing any other to apply).
Anyway don't think I'm knocking on anyone you are all fine and doing great things for AOS4 no doubt, I just wanted to say I found the process a bit strange that's all.

@abalaban

why not a developper made something and after found that a bounty exist for the same thing ??? Sometime, that could arrive

also the developper could test first if he think he could arrive to do the bounty and after take the bounty for him. Honestly, It's not a problem for me because the main goal is to have a new feature for the OSES.

In my point ov view, It's more important for me a port for all the OSES than just for one of them that have someting done before the bounty or not.

thanks to afxgroup for taking this bounty, for me it's the final word
