Software News   Software News : Bounty for JIT enabled E-UAE on AmigaOS4.1
posted by Troels on 9-Jun-2009 14:44:14 (6289 reads)
E-UAE on AmigaOS4.1 (and MorphOS) supports only interpretive emulation and is quite slow compared to f.ex. winUAE.
What's needed is JIT 68K code emulation to speed things up.
Especially AmigaOS4.1 users with slower machines will gain a lot from a JIT version of E-UAE.

As the JIT will automatically become open source, other PPC platforms will also be able to benefit from it.

As a minimum the project should be able to.
- Bring JIT 68k code emulation to the OS4 version of E-UAE.
- Work with a number of specified games and applications that runs
(slow) under the OS4 version of E-UAE.

Is there anyway to tell what the limitations are of JIT?
More RAM means faster speed up to a point, from what I understand will increase the speed.
Will it level off and do no more good after a while?

By the size of the translation buffer holding native PPC instructions? The smaller the buffer, the fewer PPC-native instructions, the more often it needs to translate. A one-instruction size buffer is basically an interpreter. If th ebuffer is larger than PPC-native translation of all the 68K software running, then you won't notice different making it bigger.

Also by what isntructions are supported in PPC-native translation, if some are not but are frequently used, you have to stop and interpret those. But it makes sense to JIT translate the most popular ones, preferrably all possible 68k instructions.

whot iff an 68k version was made then os 4 world use the ppc to run uae with jit. then the program/emolator dont have to translate the cpu,

yes wee most off all need a faster uae.

the aros version dosent work,
woth iff the code was mixed. so it both used 68k and ppc (powerup/warpos) then the program world use warpos warpper and jit.

The JIT will automatically become open source and other PPC OS, be able to benefit from it.

way does wee have to trow away evey advantage that os 4.x have
i relly cant see way wee have to give the morphos pepole anything
wee give and give there dont give anything back and ther are only taking resources from the platform.. way not take half og evry thing and give it to bill gates. amiga indrustri is so small anyway..

anyway wee relly neeed jit to uae too be avaible to use uae as an final solution....

this thing definitely is worth a bounty!

@retro

Amigaworld will benefit if we work together. No camps, no sides, all together.
What if Hyperion guys dive into sea inside some airplane? Is it not good that we then have planB and planC?

Oh please stop the stupid trolling, the red/blue wars are long over except in the minds of a few idiots.

Anyway to your main point, check the license for E-UAE (it's GPL if you can't be bothered)
There's no way to keep it 'OS4 exclusive'.

Donated... I think it's important to a lot of OS4 users to be able to emulate the old games/software on their Amiga machines... getting JIT will make the whole OS4 platform that bit more tempting to potential users.

Cheers

No doubt, this would change a lot making Classic Amiga-emulation much faster!

Nobody is throwing away any advantages. In fact, by making it open source, everybody wins. The whole point is by being open source, more people can participate in adding to the code and fixing issues and making it better for everybody. The very close source compatibility between AROS, MOS and OS 3.x/4.x has meant that lots of little tools and utilities have been easily ported between the 3 operating systems, to the mutual benefit of all of them.

It really is about time the hatchet was well and truly buried, and that all three groups just learn to live with each other and get along. Life is too short for all of these petty fights.

it requires a very skilled coder, or team, and i doubt there is any left or free at the moment. I wouldn't be surprised if nobody picks up the bounty. Not very optimistic here.

Umisef has written that he will give his unfinished JIT PPC to people. Amidog has written simple jit for ppc also (for Amigenerator).

Complete and utter bovine excrement.
Last update 20th August 2008, I'd hardly class it as abandoned, it's newer
than OS4 for the 'classic' Amiga, and only 1 month older than OS4.1 !

I guess we can class them as abandonware too huh ?

You really should read the GPL sometime, you can't hold back the sources.

Jeez, how pathetic.

Howcome you use E-UAE, which has had lots of fixes and improvements from "non-OS4" coders (ie Windows,Linux,Mac,AROS etc). Even EvilRich's site says that E-UAE is "largely based on WinUAE"

But you're not prepared to see changes made by OS4 coders go back into the main source tree ?

Yet you feel you can lecture about others taking but not giving back? Seems very hypocritical if you ask me.

Doesnt work that way. There is a 68k version by the way, which also emulates the 68k cpu. UAE requires the cpu be emulated due to chipset timings.
As for AROS version doesnt work ?? Huh ?? I use it regularly (with jit cpu emulation) and its the best version available to date on an Amiga based system (j-uae).

I see a lot of people have donated already. I put in some money also of course.
Once E-UAE is working properly with PPC JIT it's going to be a very nice situation for a lot of PPC users;

Sam440.xxx
Peg.xxx
Efika.xxx
MacMin.xxx
YellowDog.xxx
etc..
