That's probably targetted at me, because the original comment was mine. No, it doesn't bother me that badly - I was just trying to point out that in reailty, Wayne is selling the domain for 10000 USD, because the rest is either not his property (the actual community members and their postings) or not worth anything (the infrastructure, i.e. the hosting and the software setup).

No it was not targeted at you. Its a general statement. If anyone is offended by him selling at that price they can start to deny him content by not posting if its that upsetting to them is all I am saying.

I'm not an intellectual property lawyer. So I'm not sure if you are right or wrong, but in practice it would seem that most sites that get sold get sold WITH their content, whether its user generated or not. Regardless, who would force this issue legally even if you were correct?

And whats the alternative? Most users would probably be ####ed if the new owner lost all the archived info as some use it to refer back for troubleshooting info.

I think most of the community would want the site to live on, with its historical info intact.

The impermanence of web-based anything is why people need to download and SAVE copies of content they think will be useful in future from any website.

There WAS a great Apple IIgs site whose owner got p.o. ed and removed content because of disagreements with his visitors.

NOTHING web-based can be counted on to be accessible ,or even exist, tomorrow in the same manner as a reference book on your shelves on a file burned to CD.

The truth is that Wayne or his successor ,could decide to shut the website and wipe/toss the servers at any time, and there isn't a darn thing a user or visitor can do to prevent it.Businesses close unexpectedly and without notice, spouses or friends suddenly walk away, equipment fails every day.Content gets removed or corrected;the websites would be a dream to Orwell's Big Brother who "corrected" history to serve the day's political propaganda.

Everybody be grateful for what you have and had,but don't think you are guaranteed anything in future.

But please don't mess up amiga.org by everyone suddenly trying to archive the site.

I think Wayne summed up the situation nicely as he locked the thread on amiga.org:
Quote:

Whether or not the site sells to a new owner is not really the deal here guys. My biggest interest is in being able to move on, while assuring that the new captain will keep the ship upright and true. Whether or not you feel I'm asking too much, or I'm wrong for doing so is truly irrelevant to the situation.

To me this means put up the bucks or shut up because money talks and B.S. walks.

Wayne,

I have been a member of Amiga.org since 2002. Thanks for your dedication to making it a great site. Fifteen years is a good milestone in our small community.

All the best,
redfox

always enjoyed Amiga.org myself but as time went on i just ended up not using it anymore (the site) and ended up going here instead.

now, its the same for this site here (AW) as i have found greener grass yet again...

thats my site cycle anyway, i will miss wayne/a.org as it has been one of the best sites around and the one i visited the most.

good luck wayne and i hope you get a sale if thats what you really want.

They are his property. He could just sell the whole news archive to someone.

For my pennies worth, Amiga.org is an asset that has a value. Wayne is selling because he needs the money, which is fair. If the community want the site and I can see it is a good site then the community have got till October to stump up the cash and buy it before it goes on ebay and is bought by Mexican Lesbian Vampires or whatever, instead of protesting the rights and wrongs of his perfectly reasonable actions.

The community has had 15 years of it for free, work out how many users, divide into 10,000 and split it. This will make it secure, 1,000 users $10 each, 100 user $100 each.

Remember next year is Amiga's 25 Anniversary, shame to lose Amiga.org.

Oh and if the community take this on I will chip in $100 and visit it more, they have a good Aros section which I need to visit more myself.

Steve

Where would AInc get that kind of money?

Bill is allready printing out the coupons but the printer run out of printing ribbon and the inkjet has been taken for debts so the money comes when it's ready.

Donations for the ribbon and some stamps?

I would give if I had the money, but right now I don't.
I hope it goes to someone or a group in the community that will take care of it and keep it going.

@thread

Although it saddens me to see Amiga.org being sold to the highest bidder, Wayne has the right to do what he desires to do with his work. If he indeed sells it to some Spanish lesbians, he has the right to do so. If he just pulls the plug on the site permanently, that is his right.

We all work because we believe that our work will result in some incentive, whether that be a monetary incentive, or just a good feeling of having done something for humanity. Wayne no longer has any incentive for keeping the site. The only incentive he can gain is the monetary value of the site gained by its sale. Although the $10,000 seems steep for the average Amiga user, it is dirt cheap in the website industry (I looked into it briefly when considering getting into such an endeavor).

The site was started and owned by this guy...why would he give out money to the users? They have free will to come and go as they please.

I say sell it to latino lesbians and give all the users 1 year free access.

And what computing is concerned.. they will find their way in to the other forums that will have more visitors and have more chance in finding someone who wants to buy some banner.

Yep lesbians it is.
