News   News : Former Netscape Executive Ends AmiZilla Booty
   posted by DiscreetFX on 20-Nov-2009 2:23:32 (32135 reads)
Chicago, Illinois November 19th, 2009

For Immediate Release

It's with great sadness that we must announce the end of the AmiZilla Booty. The former Netscape Executive has been concerned with the length of the contest for some time and now no longer wishes to participant. Listed below is a statement in his own words about why the contest is over.

"Today I wish to end the AmiZilla Contest, this project has gone on way too long with no project updates from any coders that might have been involved. Some that never even donated to the contest have tried to use it to cast DiscreetFX and myself in a bad light. Rumors were spread that the funds were being used for other things. I take this as a personal insult myself since I am in control of the funds and am of high ethical character. AmiZilla was always about helping the Amiga, AROS & MorphOS community get a modern browser. It was a contest though and without a clear winner the contest was not helping it's sponsors, mainly DiscreetFX and myself.

Many times I was going to increase my contribution to the bounty considerably but I did not because of rumor spreading and in-fighting. I advise everyone in the Amiga community to do more and talk less in the future. I officially withdraw my AmiZilla funds and hopefully make the Amiga community wiser for it. Actions speak louder than words, this is my action. I do see a light at the end of the tunnel though. The developers of Amiga OS 4.1 have taken it upon themselves to actually do the hard work of porting Firefox to AmigaOS. They would have made the programming team from Netscape proud."

That's the end of his statement. He did say the CD is maturing and all the funds minus his contribution will be transferred back to DiscreetFX. Listed below are the options that those that donated have.

1. Transfer your donation to Timberwolf to help that Firefox bounty succeed.

2. Request a refund and have it processed through our accounting department. Your donation was always safe with DiscreetFX. We have never done any type of coupon scams or anything else unethical in the history of the company.

3. Transfer donation to Open Video Toaster. This effort to bring video editing and effects to Amiga OS 4.x, AROS and MorphOS is in need of more donations to make it thrive. AmigaOS, MorphOS & AROS have no video editing applications anywhere near the quality of the Amiga Video Toaster. What they do have is the rare opportunity of the complete source code to this classic best selling system. Use that opportunity wisely!

4. Receive the equivalent of your donation in DFX products.

5. Request your donation goes to Charity Water. Many people in the world are suffering because they don't have clean water. Help them by transferring your AmiZilla Booty donation to this great charity.

Sorry for the bad news but AmiZilla's key backer has spoken.

Best regards

DiscreetFX Team

Anyway, it's only $10 and i don't really care. I was just stressing the point for those who gave $50 or more.

The bad news (for US) is the Dollar rate vs the Euro rate. Fortunately, there were intersest.

@Manu

We like and support AROS, don't comment on rumors and certainly don't comment on Moobunny. Your welcome to your opinion and can believe anything you like.

It seems to infer that the former Netscape Executive reads Moo Bunny. I guess its possible. But I don't personally think this is very likely at all.

People are only asking you because you chose to mention Moo Bunny in your own update to your own Amizilla page. Also Tedd from your firm has been posting there lately.

Why take such actions if you really don't comment on Moo Bunny?

@fairlanefastback

Truth is stranger than fiction but feel free to believe anything you want. It won't change the facts though. Think about it for a minute. Would it really make sense for DiscreetFX to end AmiZilla a month before Christmas in a down economy? Or does it make more sense that an executive got fed up with it and said he is done? Comments similar to some in this very thread are what upset him. Why would we be nice and still cover Paypal fees and give interest so donators did not loose anything? Other bounty systems deduct Paypal fees from donations and don't offer interest. Please correct me if I'm wrong here but it seems very generous especially when some choose to speak unkindly about us.

Well, I suggest DiscreetFX should simply admit that he made up that story with the Netscape exec and then let's all forget about it. Nobody's perfect but he should at least clear things up now. The community deserves this. And of course he should contact everyone who donated and offer a refund or transfer.

It's obvious that this bounty has been cancelled just because the Frieden's were currently preparing for harvest and reap that $12k bounty by releasing the sources. Everything else doesn't make sense. And the moo bunny trolls explanation is really totally hilarious. Or what have 2 or 3 moo bunny trolls to do with over 170 honest donators to this project? You get it, nothing. Really, it's such a bad explanation. I'd at least have hoped DiscreetFX would've come up with a better story in order to justify a bounty cancellation... but this one is really, well, hilarious..

Mod note: An abuse report was logged against this post and its been approved as this was another unsubstantiated direct accusation. This is a second warning.

I don't get one word of what you are trying to say. But if you still are going to support Aros then that's fine. I'm fine with that for now.

Didn't have any idea that those EUR 7 was not from DiscreetFX but from you. Have put your name on the donations list instead of DiscreetFX.

Thanks or supporting Project Timberwolf.

@Troels

Maybe you have since fixed this but accounting said at the time you donation system did not allow comments to be included so they were not able to state the donation was from K-L.

Update accounting just said your donation system is down. Are you updating or changing something?

@DiscreetFX

I have no idea what the facts really are. Though I find it odd you'd either be pointing out to this former executive what is said on Moo Bunny or why anyone in his or her position would care to read there and beyond that care what folks say there who are likely not bounty donors.

But lets face it, this would not be the first time a company did stuff just for drama and notoriety in the community. Only you know the truth. This whole thing is just wacky/weird though. So personally I'm skeptical.

where have you got the Frieden's will release the whole sources?

and then (AFAIK) the Amizilla project was targeted to all amiga and amiga-like incarnations .... Timberwolf is for 4.1 only.

i really don't get your point.

Too many people read Moobunny it seems. They had some very unpleasant things to say about aw.net and you in particular as well.

@qwertz
The Friedens was most likely NOT prepared to release the sourcecode.

I was talking to DiscreetFX some time ago about getting the rules changed so that the Friedens might want to share the sourcecode with MOS/AROS.
The Amizilla rules was changed before so why not do it again IF there was a chance to get ALL source available.

Unfortunately there was never any contact made with the anonymous man in charge of the bounty. No interest from the Netscape guy to help MOS/AROS or Amiga 68K!

@DiscreetFX
The Timberwolf donations you made, are they from you or other people?

@Troels

Those donations were from us. You might want to remove our e-mail address so spam spiders don't have a feast on them. Your e-mail was forwarded to him. We have no control over what he chooses to do. Hopefully you remember we also transferred your AmiZilla donation to Timberwolf with no problems.

They've railed on AW.net and its moderators for years. I'd hardly be the first (or the last). Its hardly worth sweating. They don't seem to like you either. Whats your point?

Whats that famous saying, judge a man by not only his friends, but by his enemies as well.

I still don't get though that a person who had the mental constitution to become an executive in the world of cut throat big business gives a crap about what a couple of folks at Moo Bunny have to say about anything.

This thread is full of unnecessary drama. Basically the amizilla bounty was a bounty that roughly corresponds to building a rocketship out of popsicles - Way to hard to do.

About cancelling it to prevent it being taken by the Friedens... well that's just retarded. amizilla bounty required release of all source code modified or added. Friedens have stated that they will never release any new code (in accordance with the Mozilla Public License).

This money has been locked up for way to long. Hopefully people will donate it to projects that actually show progress.

This was in my opinion a very tough, but correct decision.

Thanks for the support.
A shame he never got in touch, wasted opportunity.

Yes you transferred my donation but to be honest I wouldn't say it was without any problems.

Paypal Europe is pretty strict and I was asked to fax some material some time ago, seems they just blocked the account even though they got the Fax long time before I needed to send it.

Will have to get in touch with them and see if they can resolve the problem.

Amigabounty.net will be fully functional ASAP.

Sorry you feel that way. The AmiZilla CD has not even matured yet. I refunded you out of my own pocket and then even donated more to Timberwolf as a good will gesture. Not sure what else I could have done to make you happy.

@DiscreetFX
Sorry, was not meant that way, I know I got a FULL refund without to many problems. Was just referring to the fact that I donated my money to a DiscreetFX bounty and it was suddenly someone else who was in charge to decide if refunds was possible.

I am perfectly aware that DiscreetFX has been very generous towards many community efforts and has used a lot of time on the amizilla project. I thank you for that but it does not change my stance that the Amizilla project was handled wrong.
