   posted by Lecta on 27-Nov-2009 20:21:36 (8532 reads)

ACube Systems is pleased to announce the release of a new version of U-Boot firmware for its line of motherboards Sam440ep and Sam440ep-flex.
This version addresses a number of problems and add some features and optimizations making it possible to cut down boot time by 3-12 seconds depending on the configuration of the board.

What's new in this version (for both versions):

* faster graphic card initialization, now it takes half the time than previous U-Boot version
* unified the first two countdowns, for an even faster boot
* solved compatibility issues with some Radeon 9200 and 9250 gfx cards
* reworked preference menu

Sam440ep miniITX version:

* a Radeon HD 2400 graphic card could be now used as secondary gfx card

Sam440ep-flex version:

* added support for Silicon Motion 502 graphic card
* added sperimental support for Catweasel MK4 controller
* a Radeon HD 2400 graphic card could be now used in both 33 and 66 Mhz PCI slots

Awesome! What does the "experimental support" for the Catweasel controller provide? Floppy disk access from UBoot? Time to look at the sources and throw my extra Catweasel Mk4 into my flex.

Nice!

I wonder when will that I/O extender and backplate be available?

After installing the update - boot time now takes 2 seconds longer and I can't use the keyboard anylonger during boot (can't press ENTER to get into u-boot)

It's on a SAM Flex 800Mhz.

EDIT: Really strange - u-boot only reacts to the keyboard (ENTER) if there is a CD (the update) in the drive - this will get me into the U-boot updater where the update is displayed - but i can't select the update, since it dosn't react to the keyboard...

Under OS 4.1 the keyboard works finee.

Radeon HD 2400 cards are only PCI-Express, or not?

@NutsAboutAmiga

Already tried that. Will try to update from DVD instead of CD to see if that changes anything.

Problem solved - the SAM Flex manual states to use the Upper J18 USB port to be able to use keyboard under uboot.

@Bitman
I never updated the Sam, is it necessary to enter U-Boot and select the update manually to make it work?

You create a CD or DVD with the ISO from Acube - press enter in the u-boot menu when asked to - you can only navigate the uboot menu if your keyboard is in the correct USB port (upper port on the back if the motherboard is laid down flat on you desk)

@Bitman
Thanks! I will try it tomorrow then (going to sleep now )

On a side note, this is more testament that these sleek Sams can do more than initially thought (faster boots, new graphic cards and soon New Final OS with plenty of features and optimizations).
The fun is just beginning it would seem

Hello! I have some questions:
A) What means "as a secondary video card"? If installed, shouldn't work as primary and "only one"?
B) Does this mean that OS4.1 supports Radeon HD2400?
C) If "YES", will the OS supports all the MB of the Video card or only 128MB?
D) Can you have a dual display on OS4.1 when a video card is installed on the PCI?
E) What about RadeonHD2400XT, will that work, or the XT was shipped only in PCI-E?

It nice to see a firmware update for my sam440ep.

Faster boot times are a bonus but better hardware support is far more interesting

Great to see that the SAM 440ep can now use RadeonHD cards.

Looked at the source. "Added sperimental [sic] support for Catweasel MK4 controller" means:

1. Detecting and initializing the Catweasel MK4.
2. Initializing and programming the Catweasel MK4 FPGA.
3. Exposing the Catweasel MK4 keyboard port as a keyboard device.

It's a good start. I see that others are working on improvements to Catweasel support under AmigaOS 4; however, firmware support for Catweasel-hosted devices, i.e. a hardware abstraction layer, sounds like a good thing.
