Software News   Software News : iODBC - Independent Open DataBase Connectivity for AmigaOS4
   posted by afxgroup on 11-Feb-2010 15:45:16 (9182 reads)

iODBC for AmigaOS4 Package is available to download.

What is ODBC?

ODBC is the acronym for Open DataBase Connectivity, a Microsoft Universal Data Access standard that started life as the Windows implementation of the X/Open SQL Call Level Interface specification. Since its inception in 1992 it has rapidly become the industry standard interface for developing database independent applications. Is is also the emerging standard interface for SQL based database engines replacing many of the first generation Embedded SQL and proprietary call level interfaces provided by database engine and database connectivity middleware vendors alike.
What is the ODBC Value Proposition?

The ability to develop applications independent of back-end database engine.
What is iODBC?

iODBC is the acronym for Independent Open DataBase Connectivity, an Open Source platform independent implementation of both the ODBC and X/Open specifications. It is rapidly emerging as the industry standard for developing solutions that are language, platform and database independent.
What is the iODBC Value Proposition?

The ability to develop applications independent of back-end database engine, operating system, and for the most part programming language. Although ODBC and iODBC are both 'C' based Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) there are numerous cross language hooks and bridges from languages such as: C++, Java, Perl, Python, TCL etc.

iODBC has been ported to numerous platforms, including Linux (x86, Itanium, Alpha, Mips, and StrongArm), Solaris (Sparc & x86), AIX, HP-UX (PA-RISC & Itanium), Digital UNIX, Dynix, Generic UNIX 5.4, FreeBSD, MacOS 9, MacOS X, DG-UX, and OpenVMS and now on AmigaOS4.
Which drivers are supported?

Actually most of common Open Source database are supported. Drivers for MySQL, PostgreSQL and SQLite are present into the package and has been tested connecting AmigaOS4 to a Windows machine. Also SQL Server is supported. Other drivers are in working. Check the Driver page for all news about driver pages.

This version is a Beta version and contains a lot of Debug informations.
These informations are useful for me to understand if something is wrong.
If you have problems please send me a mail and i'll take a look at it.

Actually, given the nature of MDB and SQLite, for those two ONLY yes you should be able to (or would in the case of MDB if the MS access driver were working) read them from files stored on AOS4 as these two have no engine/server actually running. For MSSQL yes you'd need a Windows server running SQL server.

For MySQL though, ( believe there's a AOS3.x version of mysql, you should be able to connect to that....

the program needs two libs:

libiodbc.so and libiodbcinst.so

copy only those two libs in SYS:SObjs and the program should start

otherwise you can copy those two libs also in the SQL Manager program, but it is better that you have the libs in the SObjs: dir

This is great! Amiga hasn't has a good database program since superbase. This will help ween me off Microsoft Access, which is way too expensive for home use.

Uh with ODBC, you can connect to your Access db on a Windows machine and manipulate the data on the Amiga.

@thinkchip

If you need a database for personnal/home usage you can try MUIbase it *currently* supports AmigaOS 68k, AmigaOS 4.x, MorphOS, AROS, Linux, Windows (and IIRC a MacOS version is in the work). The beauty is that this program is *free*, under GPL and actively developped by its author (which is so rare for a GPLed software that it worth mentioning)

@afxgroup

Thank you for this software this is the first step to bring back serious development into AmigaOS.

@afxgroup

thanks...Tried copying 2 libs again to SObjs: now SQL Manager is working :)

Will you release some documentation about how to connect to .mdb databases ?

For access to databases you also need drivers such as FreeTDS which has source available from http://www.freetds.org/ for access to MS SQL and Sybase. A standard GCC compiler should be able to compile it.

the MDB driver is included in the package but i didn't succeded to connect to an mdb.. i've spent no great time with it but i'll take a look. but i think you should use sqlite instead mdb. is really faster and since you don't have on OS4 an "Access" replacement, the mdb format is really useless for your programs.

BTW.
i will release the iodbc SDK so everyone can use databases in their programs

There is no way i h*** amiga will benefit from .NET not even windows benefits from it.

They should have stuck to basci, C/C++ and Java, no need to reinvent programming/te wheel. For the sake of just comming up with a whell that does not really adresses any ones need.

Ummmm.... where to begin? I have a lot of gripes about MS but .NET certainly is not one of them. In fact, you should wish, you had something like this available for Amiga, as it would make programming for the Amiga platform incredibly more inviting.

1. Windows does benefit incredibly from .NET. .NET is fantastic at cutting through the mess of low level rubbish which is Windows and easing development for the platform. It's development platform is second to none and used by businesses the world over.
2. .NET contains a virtual machine for languages called the Common Language Runtime, which is an AWESOME idea. It could theoretically be OS agnostic and that is what the Mono team is trying to produce and what would be a great to port to Amiga.
3. MS has always supported a multitude of languages throughout its existence. Why should anything be different now? Their library of supported languages continues to grow, either through MS or third parties. I imagine your objection is to C#, which in of itself is not .NET, but a language that compiles to byte-code running on a VM which is part of .NET.
4. MS no longer actively supports Java because for good or for evil they needed to enhance Java in a non-standard way to tie it to their proprietary products. When Sun sued, along came C#, which now is arguably technically superior to Java, and open to whatever enhancements Microsoft want to make. This is a win for MS and actually a win for developers too. .NET isn't a fit for every development problem, but is good enough for business. My only gripe is that its language enhancements come so quickly and so fast it is hard to keep up.
5. If Hyperion alters the Amiga API, can one not argue, that that too, is not needed. MS is free to do what they want with their product just as Hyperion is, and heaven forbid MS actually make something simpler to do(for a change).
