Software News   Software News : IceFileSystem 1.13 released (MorphOS)
   posted by Returner on 15-Aug-2010 13:44:43 (6800 reads)
IceFileSystem 1.13 released for MorphOS.

IceFileSystem is a 64bit disk filesystem supporting a high number of useful features:

64bit file/partition/extent sizes (actually very close to 2^63 bytes).
No self imposed fragmentation of large files unless there is not enough contigious space available.

All metadata on disk is checksummed. This means any errors on disk will be detected a lot quicker.

Meta level jornalling. Journalling makes operations to disk atomic.

Hardlinks (directory and file), softlinks, notification, examine all, record locking,
file comments. Fully supported.

Supports almost any 2^x media sector sizes. Filesystem layout on disk is not dependant on a specific underlying sector size.
Filesystem may however place data on disk so that it is optimal for the sector size used.

Filesystem does not get slower for larger partitions (scales very well), or when heavily fragmented.

No limit in # of files/dirs in partition/dirs.

Handles removable media.

Supports optional recycle dir.

Supports automatically truncated log files and optional filesystem logfile.

Wastes only 128k (and preallocates another 128k for meta space) for filesystem administration data, regardless of partition size.

Dynamic handling of cache memory. Memory is given back (progressivly) to system when not used.

Oh, and any word on MOS-Team embracing it as the official "preferred" MOS filesystem ?

First of all, the current licensing makes that rather unlikely. Also, I have some doubts if we'd allow E applications in the boot.img (who knows if that'd even work with boot.img contents being mapped as read-only, I guess only Leif can say something about that).

@Fab

I though Ext2 was only 32-bit, but supported filesizes >2 (4) GB when created with a larger block size, although at the expense of greater wasted disk space. NTFS support is currently read only (at least for us users), so hardly counts.
I've been thinking of experimenting with EXT2, but haven't got around to it yet. There may be no need now

@Thread
This is a great leap forward for MorphOS users, and from the developer notes has been well planned, designed and executed (hopefully).
If it requires the disk to be partitioned using RDB, then I'll probably end up using it as a storage (rather than system) partition for my use (Mac min, single HDD).

Odd how the system will end up:

HFS: Boot image partition
SFS: System partition
IFS: Storage partition

Cool, a native 64-bit FS! Constant progress for MorphOS, it's good to see the in-demand applications/tools/components being worked on.

Thankyou to Leif for 3 years work on this.

Wikipedia states maximum file size range of 16GB to 2TB for ext2, and the same for ext3 as well. (Depending on the block size.) MorphOS' ext2/3 filesystem reads/writes ext3 as well, incl. large files. I think the default block size is 4K anyway, as smaller sizes doesn't make a lot sense with current HDD sizes, so 2TB files are possible by default.

@Chain-Q

Thanks for the info - I did have a look on the Wikipedia page after posting, but got waylaid (damn links, always tempting me with something interesting (but off-topic) to chase after ).

I was completely unaware that ext3 was also supported r/w by MorphOS. Good news

Interesting!

I hope to see it also on other Amigalike platforms.

(did not spot any official info about other platforms yet.)

btw. 3000¤ to unlock the filesystem + tools does not seem too much.
Does it count if one person orders 300 keyfiles?

Read-only works. (only allocated memory is ever modified).

Nice, I'd like to try it on my PegII...

What's the max(length(filesize))?

Cheers,

Dragster

First problem solved. I guess an agreement could be reached for the licence. So, what else now ? :)

A bug has been found in version 1.13 that can cause the latest modifications
to disk to be lost.. This will be fixed for next version, along with other
minor bugs. Next version will come soon.
