Software News   Software News : BOH update13 released
   posted by saimo on 18-Aug-2010 14:20:48 (5815 reads)
Campobasso, Italy - August 18, 2010

For both those who are having a great gaming time now and those who will back at their computers after the summer, here is one more massive update that takes BOH to yet another level.

More specifically, this update:
* adds world standings: the game can send automatically the local records to a global server that keeps the real-time standings of all the players in the world who make use of this new feature;
* adds a new tile kind: the message point, i.e. a location that reveals a message (a hint, a riddle, a part of story, etc.);
* uses the messages points to make many missions more intriguing and to improve the tutorial missions (which have also been slightly modified for greater effectiveness);
* adds the theme "pyramid";
* adds 5 new missions;
* adds the possibility of specifying a success epilogue and a failure epilogue for each phase;
* reworks automappers: the more powerful one now covers the same area of the other one, but provides also an alternative rendering mode whereby the map reflects faithfully the actual colors of the tiles;
* makes movements of enemies clearer;
* allows the RM to open locked passages and exits only when facing them;
* removes sidestepping;
* makes [SPACE] the default automapper key;
* makes the alignment of menu texts definable by the theme designer;
* improves a few strings in some translations;
* improves and updates the manuals;
* applies various other changes.

The update can be downloaded for free from the DOWNLOADS page of the official website.
The demos have been updated to reflect the changes.

About BOH

BOH is a unique retro-flavoured puzzle-riddled maze game spiced up with thrilling action.
You move in claustrophobic, mysterious, dangerous battlefields searching for the Evil Masters, who throw countless enemies at you until you discover and face them in the final battle. Although your quests are made slightly less hard by the power-ups scattered all around, carrying out the missions demands lots of concentration and quick reflexes.
With BOH the fun never ends: new missions can be added anytime and you can even create your own! And, as if that was not enough, you can also customize entirely its audio-visual aspect!
BOH has been created with lots of passion and care to offer, with its oldschool style, a fascinatingly different videogaming experience.

Thanks!! Downloaded and tested. Nice new theme!

Also I was curious about some of the translations, so I found that "récord" is actually an accepted spanish word for best result, so you would like to correct that (the missing accent)

I'll correct that immediately, so that it'll be part of the next update (if there will be one, that is).

And I was wondering, is there a way to reset the missions. There was a text file where you can delete the missions completed, but that seems not to be the case now.

Yes, there is a way. But let me first ask: why would you want to trash your current records? Why don't you submit them?
Anyway, you can simply replace the mission files with those included in the update package - that will clear all the records, all the playing times and also the global playing time, if (the figure stored in) the configuration file gets deleted.

Just curiosity. I remember copying that file between my Debian, wine and windows BOH installations to sinchronize them (And also forgetting to copy it before having to format my HD!) Now I just run the Debian one, so no problem.

@all

Speaking of records... it looks like you guys are a bit shy
Until now, only 2 dared submitting their records, so the standings look a bit bare

Just sent mine. I had a problem entering the code. Using the Warm theme at that moment, it seems that the field for the code has space for 1 less character (maybe an issue with the fonts for the theme?). I had to change to default theme to make it work.

just sent mine but I lost alot of old missions when i forgot to back up after update 10 or 11 i think..anyhow tonight with the new update I finally finished the blocks mission which I've been playing for quite a while now

also I noticed talk about striding being eliminated but I honestly didnt even notice as I hardly ever used it to complete any of my missions..especially as the character movement precision has drastically improved since the early updates

@saimo

sorry, haven't found the time yesterday to check the things you proposed. Hopefully, I can sometime at this WE.

The filesystem is SFS0 and T: is located in "RAM:T/ " (which is its default location).

regards,
nexus

If the code doesn't visually fit, then it scrolls sideways. Maybe you had inserted an unneeded character somewhere (the requester doesn't accept more than 29 characters)?

Yes, it's the turning acceleration introduced by update10 that you're particularly enjoying, then

No problem. Your feedback is welcome anytime

Same here, so the problem is not there.

Nop, didn't scroll. Check the code three time. I tried anyway thinking it could be hidden, but after hitting ENTER I was back in the desktop. I had CAPS LOCK on (which wasn't when successfully tried with the default theme).

Anyway, it is working now.

@emeck

Let me try to understand if there actually is a problem somewhere...

I have tried myself now and everything worked nicely. But it reminded me of the following: right, in the warm theme case there can't be no scrolling because the requester is wide more than enough. Did your screen look like this?

Pressing [ENTER] quits only if no code is entered. The only possibility I can think of is the following: the code was not syntactically correct, so pressing [ENTER] cleared it; then, another press quitted the program. Is this what happened?
Another little question: did you include the dashes (they're optional, but I need to know)?

BTW: case does not matter and CAPS LOCK on doesn't have any effect besides capitalizing letters, so case can't be the problem.

Yes, it looked like that. Maybe the problem was, as there is no scrolling, that I typed too many of the last character.

Ok, I've submitted some more records. Beware people!! More are coming... later.

Ah, that could lead to a syntactical error and thus to the clearing of the code.
Well, if anybody ever experiences similar problems, please report them.

* what filesystem does the partition where BOH resides use?
* where do you have T:, and what is its filesystem?

T: is loacted in Ram: (i.e. Ram:T/)
Filesystem: SFS0

Quote:
Echo >T:thisfileisempty
List T:thisfileisempty LFORMAT=§%L§
Delete T:thisfileisempty

The output is:

Everything is alright, so I can't really see why you always end up with such a weird message. Maybe that problem was in some old update package. If you can bother, I suggest you download the update packages again.
Thanks for the test and also for the records you submitted!
