Wow above 60 people online at 2 AM CET in the morning. Usually these are really quite hours.

Good night.

@MikeB:

Thanks, mate, that was much better. I just downloaded all four images, and loaded them up in multiview in fullscreen mode. Then I moved the pointer around the screen a little, clicking on stuff. For a few blissfull seconds, I had OS4 running on my machine...

Yeah, I know it's kind of sad.

The only thing I really dont like in these screenshots is the metal background in the windows.. its alright, but I think they can do better, something a bit more consistent looking..

And also I think maybe AmigaOS should try and move away from the OS 3.x "grey" look.. maybe try for a lighter shade of grey, or white/offwhite.. dark grey doesnt look that modern anymore..

But its coming along nicely. I would be happy to use that look daily.

It's just a shame the MUI listview scrollbars/scroll gadgets look a bit dated, when you compare it to the new intuition/reaction look. I dont know how keen the MUI guys will be to update the OS 4.0 version and look. As a programmer (I'm not a very good one, but hey) the vast cosmetic improvement in reaction/intuition over MUI 3.8 makes me want to use those GUI systems instead for my programs, just so they look cool.

But anyway, to sum up, the look is getting pretty acceptable. Friend of mine here reckons it looks as good as Win95.. hes a PC guy, so that was good to hear.

-Edit- And how cool do those anti aliased fonts look?? Can anyone tell us what fonts are coming with OS 4.0? It would be good if they included Windows fonts like Arial, so that web browsing looks similar to on a PC..

The screenshots are OK, although except for the window borders it's pretty much the same as 3.x

I was expecting a bit more, something along the lines of CnlPepper and Simoami's designs.

I think Hyperion is probably too concerned with keeping a classic look and are somewhat affraid to drift away too much. I hope they can come up with better looks when it comes out.

I like them a lot - they look like an Amiga, but with a modern feel. I'm particularly impressed with the AA fonts and the gradients, although I'd like to see different icons.

BTW good to see that you finally got the server back on People definitely want to see these pics, and they seem to be going down very well at other sites. Think of it as practice for the inevitable /. effect when OS4 is out

Hmm, the icon + icon text seems to behave a bit wierd? Somewhat semitransparent. One can se text imposing background on other icons and other icons imposing background on other icon texts. Aren't they fully transparent?

huh, seems amigaworld survived after all

To be honest, i'm dissapointed. It looks dull, old, grey, boring,... Just a classic 3.9 look.

I don't see anything new. And i certainly don't detect any work of a graphics artist here (the grey texturing on windows and borders is just plain ugly). Also, i would have hoped that the icons would have been redone (Mason, where are you?). These glowicons just don't do it anymore for a modern OS.

By the way, there was talk about a default gui, yet 4 official screens, 4 different settings. What will be the official theme then?

I really do hope that a lot is done in the last 20%.

And quite frankly, i can't see anything better than those screenshots that were released months ago.

@Z5

Well, you are one of the few that has a problem with the color and texturing so I think Hyperion should go in this direction for the default look.

If the majority likes it, stick with it.

@PulsatingQuasar:

See the thread on Amiga.Org about SimoAmi's stuff to see what ppl really like. Maybe you should have a look at it too.

@z5

Well, I like it as well. I might change the WB background and window background though. But otherwise it looks just fine to me.

And btw, I'm sure the guy who made the design is thrilled by peoples overly negative comments. But what's to expect from Amigans anyway...

Its nice stuff I agree - but why do people have to be so cynical all the time - they`re updating the OS to PPC native, not re-working the whole bleeding GUI - at least not yet.

Lets walk before we can run, yeah?

@z5

You'll never get a look that everyone likes, best thing to do would be to have a couple of themes included but mainly make most things user configurable so you can make it look the way YOU want it to, which they are doing so theres nothing to moan over really is there?

I think that as well as the new gradients, everything can be skinned with bitmaps - so it is very customisable.

@L8-X:

That is not the point. I have never done anything to change any windows theme on any pc. Have a look around at your office: how many ppl change the default look? How many pc users have you seen with a different icon set?

Fact is: we want to customise everything because we love our Amiga. Look outside the Amiga community, and you will see a completely different picture.

Fact is: looks are important in this modern society. If it doesn't look good, it will not even be given a second view.

But i understand the reasons: this is targetted at the Amiga community. They don't want to shock us with anything new. So my question: don't anyone has any higher ambitions than to do work for the 2000 or so ppl still interested in the Amiga?

They should have gone for a look that they can present to the rest of the world, not to the amiga community. It should have looked good so that ppl OUTSIDE the amiga community take notice. And believe me, this is the first step for ppl outside to take notice.

I wonder how much will be done in the 20%. And how will the default theme look like. Will the background be like screen 1 or 2?
And what was the work done by the graphics designer? I mean, the icons were there, the backdrop is from the OS4 logo, the texture is a standard texture, which leaves?

But i rest my case. As somebody said, it seems we aren't allowed to say that we don't like it anymore...because we are Amigans.
