Hardware News   Hardware News : OS4 patch 1.2 for Sam440ep/flex boards
   posted by marko on 11-Feb-2011 23:33:21 (7707 reads)
There's an update of sam440ep_setup on OS4Depot.

With this new setting read speed increase around 50% on Radeon PCI cards
(up to 42 MB/s on a M9 card) and around 200% on RadeonHD PCI cards

What it does:

On some Sam440ep boards, the MMUCR register is not set correctly at bootstrap.
This leads to poor write L1 cache performances.
The utility check the register, and if needed, modify it.

On all Sam440ep boards with a Radeon card enables read prefetching for graphic ram.
If a Radeon card is detected, the utility will modify the POM2 PCI registers to enable read prefetching.
This speed up reads for the gfx card from 15 MB/s to 30 MB/s on a M9 card.

Sets the Latency Timer on the 440ep PCI Bridge,
With this new setting read speed increase around 50% on Radeon PCI cards
(up to 42 MB/s on a M9 card) and around 200% on RadeonHD PCI cards

Good, interesting to see how things can be improved by software patches!

Is there any point in installing this again on a sam 440ep with integrated gfx??
I already installed the previous version of same patch, but have no idea if this one will increase performance further.

@Tomas

Check my benchmarks

Before this patch (1.1):
READ: 29 MB/Sec
WRITE: 63 MB/Sec

After this patch (1.2):
READ: 41 MB/Sec
WRITE: 63 MB/Sec

This is just the patch that you must run every time you boot up, just download, unpack and replace the old "Sam440ep_setup" file and reboot... and you are done.

@ACube
Since you mention "PCI cards" it is not clear if the original Sam440 (with built-in graphics chip) will benefit.

You later mention "a M9 card" which might imply it will help such Sam440s, but it is not clear. (I recall it has an M9 chip, which is on the internal PCI bus, but maybe that is already set-up correctly?)

@marko

WOW, the "read" value went from the original 14MB to 41MB that's basically +300%

Amazing

Installed on SamEp667. No noticeable perfomance gained on Q2 timedemo, just 0.4 fps more.

@Cool_AmigaN
I'm not surprised. The previous version of this patch didn't make a noticable difference, but (as people pointed out then) that's because of how Quake 3 (and other 3D games) tend to work.

But I wouldn't be surprised if it makes a bigger difference on some 2D games (especially ports of badly written PC games).

Hello,

Hope Acube will improve more this patch. Maybe with 60-80mo/s, we could play all DVD without frameskip.
