News   News : IContain announces Amiga branded TVs, cell phones and computers

A company called IContain is about to offer various Amiga branded devices.

From amiganews.de

IContain announces Amiga branded TVs, cell phones and computers When a certain Todd Kleperis contacted the Aminet team two days ago to "discuss your library of Amiga titles" and ask for "guidance as to how to work with the existing fan base", the initial reaction over over at Aminet was confusion.

I started thinking about the various trademark names that don't mean anything anymore because of the many hands/owners that the name has been through... Hamilton, Elgin, Singer, Commodore... yes it is my opinion that the name and trademark of Commodore is meaningless. I still have fond memories of my C64 and Commodore-Amiga, but I don't care whether something, or anything, has the Commodore name or logo. At this point in the Amiga game, I don't care whether an X1000, SAM4x0, or OS has the "Amiga" name and logo. I know Hyperion put up a long and arduous battle for the naming rights, but it was all in vain. At this point, I think most OS4.x customers just want a good product, not a name or logo.

-Just another 2 cents, brining the total to 4 cents.

@thread

So, in summary:

Quote:
The expression "elephant in the room" refers to a situation where something major is going on, it's on everyone's mind and impossible to ignore -- like an elephant in the room. But nobody talks about the "elephant" because nobody knows what to do about it.

Do you think it is possible to run AROS natively on a OEM TabletPC or iPad-like device?

While AROS X86 is very nice for a development system or AmigaOS4/MOS alternative, I guess real future for AROS is mobile devices ?

@SinanG

Yes, it's possible and I think some people have done it already(AROS-exec being down I cannot confirm this).

And once the ARM native port is complete, you'll be able to run it from numerous mobile devices, including smartphones.

There's no reason to run any AmigaOIDs on tablets. AmigaOS is not tablet OS, its UI elements and IO are mouse based.

Yes... you could use a stylus for help, but it is far from ideal.

You can't do mulittouch with stylus. Anyway, there's no point of discussing this, AmigaOIDs are not tablet OSes, the end.

Truism. Never know what a company will decide in adding in support when creating a AROS inspired OS. I would say adding touch support to the UI design from the very beginning would be a smart move.

An ARM port of AROS is already ongoing and of course it will be possible to run it on ARM-based devices such as tablet and smartphones, although the first obvious target will be cheap netbooks and nettops. It's no mystere that Genesi helped funding development of AROS on their latest ARM-based systems. Continue reading, please...

@Opi

...however Opi's objection about the GUI are right. GUIs, however, are programmable objects like any other part of the operating environment, so it won't take a geologic age to have someone adapting the GUI of AROS to touch screens. There's also already a video showing how AROS already performs well on a touch-screen equipped computer, with just some little tweaking of control settings.

Real issues for smartphones and tablets are the phone parts of these instruments. AROS would be supposed not to crash during a call, and its multitasking should be improved to understand that a phone ring is effectively a IRQ for anything else running on the same device, being it a new, old or emulated application.

Then, in the end, there is the APP issue. Why should people limit the use of their tablets to AROS applications, when Android is so cool, so easy and so good to use already? Not to count that people using Android can easily find everything they need on the marketplace, and a similar mechanism should be introduced for AROS too. But people like Pascal are already working on something like it.

So why closing all the doors already?

So was not LINUX/UNIX and almost all tablet/Smartphone OS are "Linuxoid" OSes (Android, QNX on RIM playbook, WebOS, iOS?, meego, limo)

who cares about the BeOS name, when the Haiku OS is available and being developed? BeOS fans have switched from one name to another, without any significant dispute. name has no relevance in the context of developing an operating system but bearing in mind recent events, AmigaOne name may become problematic.
Amiga Inc. "last breath" will ridicule the Amiga name to the extent not known before. Our community does not have enough supporters, except few portals like OSnews, who might undeceive readers and point them to an active fan community.

Actually I believe a single member of this community is worth 100 of another when it comes to being adamant (in forums) about stuff

When a news comes out, it will be posted here (or other Amiga forums) too, and if what's proposed there it's full of BS, it will be our duty to go there and straighten out a thing or two.
We can simply inform them that Amiga at some point in its evolution, was first half abbandoned by Commodore and started evolving more on EXPANSION CARDS than else and that even today AmigaOS running on custom HW is an on-going development, new custom HW is made and the OS is still commercially available and developed (Mos users can inform them of Mos Amiga origin and importance of course).
Then people might not care, but if they must get an overpriced x86 box, we have people here that will gladly teach them how to build one with stuff they already have lying around somewhere, and that will cost them "0" including a nice AmigaOS clone, in the form of the venerable Aros.

@Damocles

Baffled face - it's a complete sentence; he hopes that "Aros-inspired OS" wasn't meant to be a reference to Commodore USA's still-not-available product (presumably Workbench 5, since AFAIK that's all CUSA has proposed in OS space... but an Aros-inspired OS on Amiga-branded hardware is reported to be untenable).

@DAX

It's not so much about what the word "Amiga" will mean to the casual observer or non-Amigan; it's about what the word "Amiga" means for me. Connotations of a happy childhood full of Speedball 2, Workbench, SEUCK, Easy Amos, and Deluxe Paint 2 and 3 are being diluted.

Imagine you knew a girl called Enid, who broke your heart. Then you meet and fall in love with another girl called Enid, who makes you very happy. Old associations would be replaced. "Enid" would stop being a sound that made your skin crawl and become one that gave you a warm glow.

Well, the unqualified word "Amiga" is going in the other direction for me

Not as far as making my skin crawl, but suffice to say, as I meet more and more girls called Enid, the name has stopped seeming special.

At least A-Cube, Sam, even Hyperion are still words that have a bit of a happy vibe to someone who, rightly or wrongly, is rooting for Amiga OS 4.

It's not a case of me hating Linux PCs or anything (I actually love 'em) - but I already have a Linux brand I care about (Crunchbang) so I've nothing to gain from Amiga being in that space - especially if it's going to be Gnome (which I hate).

What we have at the minute is a case of butter spread over too much bread, to the point where it no longer has a distinct buttery taste.
