A company called IContain is about to offer various Amiga branded devices.

From amiganews.de
Quote:

IContain announces Amiga branded TVs, cell phones and computers When a certain Todd Kleperis contacted the Aminet team two days ago to "discuss your library of Amiga titles" and ask for "guidance as to how to work with the existing fan base", the initial reaction over over at Aminet was confusion.

In the end, the problem is for them, as the mark "AMIGA" is becoming useless and devalued

You are right.

Are these "keyboard computers"? I don't think so.

No no - you misunderstand. They have an 'exclusive right' to do keyboard computers but they can do other things as well - it's just that anyone else that gets a license can do too - but not for all in one keyboards. They can do all in one monitors however - like iContain.

This devalues the brand even further.

i might be wrong but pinging Hyperion and A-eon (both 213.133.108.237) websites shows that their hosting provider might be having some kind of problem...

According to the all potential owners of the Amiga licenses till today,
it could be that they bankrupted, got the money from beta test X1`s and
escaped away ?

OK, looks like the Amiga name is now officially worthless and meaningless.

Use your favourite operating system and forget about it.

Hmm they could include AMC into their TV's..... oh they can't... AMIGA + AmigOS(or related) is a no go --- crazy world.

I really don't see Hyperion or A-Eon doing that. They are one of the only genuine companies left.

Yes - the X1000 is late - very late - but let's not call time on it yet. The beta users are not up in arms so they must be happy with what they see.

Sorry - let's not derail the thread though - this is about iContain.

Am doing that since ages. Really, in the beginning, say about 10 years ago, I felt fond of the name, but after a little while I felt a great relief to have left the name behind me and use something with a fresh name. Eventually it is about idea, not the name.

Names are needed for identification.

A name becomes meaningless ONLY when it is applied to something that is unrelated, as it ends up not identifying anything (just generates confusion).
In the case of AmigaOS it has the meaning it always had, it identifies the Amiga Operating System, it got the name way before a broke Bill McEwen started licensing stuff around.
It has all the rights in the world to proudly sport it.

I hate to be that guy but "we told you so". Name following is never smart. Following a name of company that died and had its corpse snatched by some guys is dangerously stupid. MorphOS Team did the right thing.

Content with not being connected, sure.

But are you saying no one ever connected to the interests of MorphOS ever pursued making it the official OS and thereby tying themselves to the same bunch licensing it at present?

They where, they had been presented with contract, they rejected it. In that they where "smarter" than Hyperion who has to suffer being tied to Amiga, Inc "strategies". Listen, there's no commercial market for whatever-Amiga. Hyperion did not get more customers by sporting AmigaOS brand.

The "Real Name" brought nothing to the table after 2000. Except misery and reason to fight for spoils of a battle that was lost. A grave robbing party. We wouldn't be further without The Name, but boy, how much comer out community would be.

@opi

I'm not arguing with you opi. I agree.
I'm just saying most everyone was attracted to the brand somewhere along the way.

AROS shifted gears several times, most recently seeing C=USA brand Amiga as a way to make further inroads. I'm not claiming that the brand itself was the entire attraction, but no one would deny it being a part of it.

When Jay left Atari, how many stayed with Atari (trademark) vs following the true asset, the man and his vision?
It's a no brainer. People trump trademark.

That's true. This is why we're here. I joined "Amiga" because it was "Amiga" but I'm staying because I liked its feeling.

Well, I guess we're doing the "waking up with fleas" part after sleeping with dogs.

Management has been such a blessing.

Here's another thought I had expressed to me recently. I'd like your opinion.
It's about the word, not the trademark.
In today's society when social skills have vanished into the wind, we have a need for a product we can call "friend".

Anyone know what an Amiga – Sermo I costs. It's looks like a nice phone, pretty much as powerful as an iPad. I don't really want to do a trans-pacific rent to own, but I might buy one at the right price.

To be fair - or rather in my own personal opinion - I think Hyperion saw that the greater chance was to have the name. I understand their thinking and I think anyone doing it completely from scratch would almost certainly fail.

That said - of course no-one has done any better than anyone else really - but the X1000 story has yet to finish.

Had AInc. been a decent and honourable company then it could have been quite different. As it happens they were the worst possible set of people to inherit the Amiga brand.

The 'Name' only has value if you are genuinely trying to revive the brand as in my Mini analogy earlier - but certainly not as a name alone. My point is - done right - continuing with a brand - a 'name' can work.

As to every thing else you argue I can only totally agree - as I find myself usually doing with your posts.

Does this mean that if I get a C=USA PC from iContain, There will be Amiga stickers stuck on the Amiga stickers?

To me this is a great big non-event. It's just history not repeating itself. Not interesting.
