Hardware News   Hardware News : Even More News on the X1000
   posted by MaximvsPayne on 10-Mar-2011 11:12:04 (13967 reads)
London, 10th March 2011

Following the AmigaOne X1000 Update article in the current edition of "Amiga Future" magazine we asked Adam Barnes, the Technical Director of Varisys, to provide an official Nemo progress report.

"From the horse's mouth"

We have had some problems with procurement of certain items for the revision 2 Nemo board which delayed our production plan by about 4 weeks. The situation was not helped either by the Chinese New Year celebrations. However, I'm pleased to report that these difficulties have now been overcome. We've had one remaining issue with supply of the onboard PC99 audio connector. The best delivery we could obtain for the existing connector type was a minimum order quantity of 10,000 pieces and a lead time of 12 weeks. We had an option for a direct replacement which has 6 jacks (enough for 5.1 analogue out) but unfortunately the Taiwanese supplier did not respond to our communications. Our alternative compromise plan was a triple jack which would support simple stereo audio out through the back panel, with header pins on the board to support 5.1 audio for users who want this feature. However, this was not our preferred option and eventually we managed to source an almost identical PC99 HD audio connector from an Italian company to satisfy our demand for all the Beta test boards.

We already have enough PA6T CPUs in hand and we have also secured supplies of the SB600 south bridge chip and various other long lead parts, with deliveries of all due on or before the 15th of this month, in sufficient quantities for the current schedule of revision 2 beta test boards. Typically, the production time from full kit to assembled boards is 10 days for small batches (the 5 off for approval). This timescale will be confirmed once the kit is issued out for build. The estimated lead time for the balance of beta test boards will be around 20-25 days based on standard PCB fabrication and assembly lead times.

Barnes also confirmed he was in the process of writing up a technical brief of the new dual-core XMOS subsystem. This will include a block diagram and pinouts so prospective end users can start working on the XMOS side of things.

@Pavlor
Those tests are quite impressive. The PAsemi wins 2 tests, 1 is won by G5 and 1 is basically on par.
In one of the tests the PAsemi performed 4 times better (+400%)
But I am sure 3D rendering will bring other surprises as well...

@DAX

Remember, these tests show only single precision FPU performance. That one test where PA6T "crushed" all others was not fair: "Advantage over 8641D and 970FX for HSI largely due to custom-built ATLAS 3.8.2 BLAS library for PA Semi vs. 3.5.1 precompiled binary library for others"

However, you are right, performance is impessive (for 25 W PowerPC CPU/SoC).

In any case you cannot tell me that having an Amiga based on an obscure (almost "mistery") CPU only used in Aerospace and Military gear (up to this point) isn't something cool!
Makes my geeky blood boil

Who is this Italian company providing the audio chip?

The audio is built into the SB600 and this company are just supplying the 5.1 connector. I'd assume they are a parts supplier that can supply in the quantities needed by Varisys for the X1000.

well, since im being accused of negative prejudice

I would point out that you are the one accusing them of lying (so acting all "ooh I'm offended" is a bit... silly). And also that you pretty-much ignored all the other points I made.... (so it's hard to take you seriously when you are doing "hit & run" type posts)

1)it's a good thing having news on x1000
2)when i read that the most advanced ppc desktop is a 4 years old machine i become angry but then i think that is sad but true. then again i think money are not mine but aeon ones instead. so they use them as they please.
3)sad but true is that amiga is a niche hobby market. no more than 1000 buyers. so if aeon had wanted to use the latest technologies final price would have been much more than 2000 euros.
4) i'm only sorry i won't ever see one of these machines by near. my budget isn't enough for a 2k euros hobby machine.
5) i hope aeon sells 10000 x1000 so prices
will go down

Maybe Hyperion has used the extra time (a year) to work on dual- / multi-core support in OS4. I think it would be great publicity-wise to have maximum performance when the computer is released for sale.

@rebraist

I hope there will be cost reduced version one day.
Less PCI slots etc.

It would be interesting to know how many PA6T chips Varisys can get.
But if PA6T cost something like 700¤ per chip, then some other cheaper chip needs to be taken in use.

@KimmoK

The current board layout could probably be re-used to a large extent for any future processors. The SoC route is here to stay. The SB600 could probably be brought forward to any future updates, as could the XMOS chip, a lot of the OS4 changes, etc...

In other words, the X1000 is the biggest/most expensive hurdle.

I think there is no 10000 PASemi's for that.
After year or two they need to do rework board for new procesor
